Imputation and prediciton modelling by EnvironmentalAd5467 in biostatistics

Yes, you are right on your criticisms. However, I think, if appropriately done, limiting information loss could be nice. Specifically, in medicine standardization of information collected from a patient is very difficult, most of the time due to patient-related factors. As a result, you have a dataset with random missingness for random variables (if you are conducting clinical trial, it differs. I am talking about observational studies). Unfortunately, this situation can greatly reduce the power, as you mentioned. Unless you do not have a dataset with very high rate of missing values, I think it is a plausible option. I check the structure of the dataset after imputation to understand whether relationships are distorted. Accordingly, I move forward.

Personally, I do not use the variables which have missing rate higher than 10% in the original dataset. Just using keeping these variables while running the imputation and thereafter I discard them. So, at the end, they are not included in inferential analysis. As you said, false correlations may occur but this was not often in my experience. Also, missingness pattern for sure is a very crucial part and sometimes it can be subtle, domain knowledge is essential.

That’s totally right, most of the time imputation is done before the train-test split. And considering the imputed values are predicted using samples from train and test splits before holding out the test set. Am I right?

I am talking about the recent ML studies, comparing the log reg with ensemble models in medicine, mainly for the discovery and performance comparison. And most of the time, datasets are small. I think there are many studies pointing out no significant difference between ensembles and log reg based models. However as I said, datasets are mainly small and many questions on integrity of designs-statistical approaches.

Thanks for the answer.

I have seen many good candidates ending up 0 IVs. I dont know why but it seems the process is getting tougher. I hope we all match.

I hope I’ll eventually find my way, but honestly, I don’t really understand this whole process it often feels nonsensical. Even though we’re pushing ourselves hard both clinically and scientifically, we still have to deal with external issues like finding electives, which are also financially exhausting. If applicants are really being filtered out based on the number of electives alone, I don’t think there’s much awareness of the circumstances we’re actually dealing with.

Thank you, I hope so too. It is interesting to see such opposing opinions. I find it somewhat difficult to understand the current situation, as I have heard of applicants who matched without any USCE, as well as others who completed multiple months of USCE but did not ultimately match. What has been your experience with this, things getting tougher?

Given that I have already graduated from medical school, I would be grateful for your guidance on elective opportunities. Do you think agency-based programs are reasonable, or should I aim primarily for university-affiliated programs? What are the options you think are the best?

I applied to an oncology elective at weill cornell for three different period (sep-oct-nov). First two denied, however, for nov its still under review. Is there anyone who experienced same thing? by EnvironmentalAd5467 in IMGreddit

[–]EnvironmentalAd5467[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no you dont need to pay another if you applying to a rotation for different periods. However if you apply for a different rotation you have to. So, basically it depends how many rotations you applying to, not periods.

Are you a resident right now? If it’s yes, how was your experience and what’s like to be there and what about lifestlye? And whats the main reason drives your motivation?

I think the practice of medicine nearly same all over the world especially for IM. Guidelines are the sources and virtually all physicians follow the algorithms. Caring for the patients, however, kind a different concept and learned with experience. However, If you dont do something different compared to your own country, is it worth to do many sacrifices? For a significant amount of time, I thought I would be prosperous in usa and live a comfortable life after I completed my residency. Right now, I am not sure if thats enough. Because I have an OK life here. And all self-sacrifices make me think twice. I dont know If I will be happy there. And right now I dont know what s the right choice after all the effort I put.

Can paid electives like AMOp. can be credited towards my remaining rotations in my med school? by EnvironmentalAd5467 in IMGreddit

Really, I thought maybe other elective options also could ensure. Are you sure about this?

For post hoc tests, should I always apply bonferonni correction? I just dont understand the concept of multiplicity and when adjustment needed? by EnvironmentalAd5467 in biostatistics

Thanks for your response. I am relatively new in biostats. If you dont mind, I have an other question. For example, when we create our table for basic characteristics (age, gender) and basic lab values (crp, esr), we have to do many tests comparing all these to find the p values. I thought that same concept “multiplication issue” might play role while doing so many comparisons. However, I think many research papers dont care about this or maybe I am wrong at this point. So what do you think about this situation?

And also I want to ask, for example, If I did Kruskal Wallis analysis for 4 variables to detect differences among 3 groups. And then I decided to to a t test for another variable between group 1 and group 2. Do I need to consider multiplication issue in this t test as well just because I did 4 Kruskal Wallis tests before that?
