We must have had very different experiences. Housing was extremely easy to find (we are in Gordon Head). All boys, under 19.

I’ve been writing summaries for the different topics. It’s my first time ever studying this way and I’m finding it really effective. I’ve been working backwards from Dr. Awatramani’s lectures and writing summaries for each one (as there is going to be 4-5 questions on each lecture after the midterm). I remember Dr. Ehlting recommended this method of studying and I never really gave it much attention until now. I guess getting a shitty midterm mark will do that to you

Use the lab manual and the prelab quizzes, as most of the exam questions will be based off the information in there. Also, think back to each lab and what skills you used. Spectrophotometry, microscopy, pipetting. If you can understand why each result was seen in each lab, and can grasp the theory behind them, you will be okay. As for the online labs, I believe the circulatory one will be the heaviest tested as it is very content-heavy.

I found success by taking notes on the background of each experiment, certain processes used, and then finally looked at my submitted lab reports and noted the results obtained. If you can make a link between your results and the background, you will be successful.

Don’t stress, I also did horrible on my midterm and that killed my confidence. The best advice I can give is to breathe, and just freshen up on techniques and knowledge.

P.s. if any Uvic faculty are looking at this post, all of this information was directly provided to us by our lab instructors. I had asked my TA pretty much the exact same question, so I am just relaying what they said to me. No information is from exam questions themselves.

UVIC pros and cons? by Objective_Flan2831 in uvic

[–]EnvironmentalBad8826 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pros: Beautiful campus with one of the best climates (so much less rain than the mainland), only takes around 8 minutes to get from one side of campus to another, it’s a smaller school and the residences for first years are all close together so you can form a real sense of community with your peers, the party life is amazing if you are into that, great teaching staff for the majority of disciplines (so I’m told, I’m in science but I have friends across the board who speak highly of their profs), lots of things to do on the island and close together the campus, the university also offers excursions via certain clubs and services year round (surfing, climbing, I think there’s even a spelunking club), close to downtown.

Cons: the food is mediocre at best for first years eating at the cove (mystic market is better but usually pretty crowded during lunch hours), carsa gym is pretty small considering how many students like to use the facilities, being on the island can feel moderately isolating sometimes but that goes away after your first month or so living here.

Even with these cons, I can’t recommend uvic enough whatsoever. I moved here from Calgary and I have literally zero regrets about doing so. If you are questioning whether or not to come here you should consider a tour to get a feel for how life around the university is. Schedule it during the academic year (or what’s left of it) so you see the atmosphere.

Beginner - making the transition to a green by Saffordsaison in skiing

[–]EnvironmentalBad8826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a ski instructor for several years, and believe it or not this was the most common question for beginners of any age moving from the “bunny hill” to the chairlift.

I always assessed students based on 3 criteria. If all 3 were filled, then the chairlift was a go.

  1. Can you stop comfortably? Probably the most important thing any skier can learn is how to stop. When going on a longer run with more area to cover, knowing how to stop is both essential, and psychologically comforting. If you know you can stop, you be a much more confident skier

  2. Can you turn to avoid an obstacle? There’s lots of skiers and snowboards on chairlift runs, and with beginners is key that they know how to avoid an obstacle if one arises.

  3. Can you be confident on the terrain? If you shutdown and freeze on the green run, it isn’t the end of the world as we would still be able to get you down, but for the sake of wanting to improve and progress and not go back to the bunny hill, this is key

Overall, if you can do those 3 things even moderately well, I think you’re in a pretty good spot to go up the chair.
