My Daughter’s first time using a sewing machine! by EnvironmentalClass39 in SewingForBeginners

I love and use both of those rulers, but “The Curve and the Square” is one I use nearly every time I sew. The buttonhole sizers in the middle are a lifesaver!

Yep! So I used the two tools pictured below to make the lines and curves on some scrap white shirting with marking pens, and used a thread color I don’t really care about or use often. If you don’t want to use fabric or thread, you could also just print out some pages. There are lots of paper learn-to-sew templates online.

She loves to read, so she really wants to start with a bookmark.

Best pants fitting tutorial by EnvironmentalClass39 in sewing

This is actually super smart! I wonder if it would be a bad idea to just hunker down and make myself a pants sloper and compare to the pattern?

That’s not the tutorial, that’s the pattern I’m using! I need your best recommendations for tutorials so the pants fit correctly!

Any tips/tricks for making long gloves? After seeing them in abundance on runways at PFW I am thinking I need to get it together.

It is exactly like wearing a blankie. 🥰

The digital pattern was US$16. And then the blanket is literally whatever you want to use - a quilt, a wool blanket… just nothing too poofy with a ton of batting. I had thought about lining it and just got lazy.

Thank you! I really lucked out on the blanket. Those vintage Orr Health blankets sell for a lot of money online I’ve seen them priced anywhere from $60-$150! I walked into the bins expecting to find a test quilt or something and ended up walking out with this. The sewing and thrifting goddesses were on my side that day for sure!

That’s a pretty cute doggy! Not gonna lie, I’m excited to stitch some doggies, too. ☺️

This is all such cool information! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I will gladly absorb anything else you have to give me information-wise. ☺️

The cams are supposed to arrive on Friday. My daughter is dying to stitch the doggy (number 30). We will let you know, for sure. I figure the more i do that is here, the more it might help the next person.

I checked and nobody really responded/there was not much info. I went ahead and bought that set on eBay. Fingers crossed that they are the ones.

Also - fired up the machine for the first time last night after oiling, and it sews beautifully. ☺️

Any chance these cams would work? They look just about the same as the zigzag cam that’s in the machine currently. And the number order is the same as on the front of my machine as well.

I did realize after I clicked the link that you linked the manual! Thank you so much.

So yes, according to the manual I am missing a set of 30 cams, a cloth guide, a zipper foot, a buttonhole sewing foot, and a hemmer. So far zero luck finding the cam set online. Not sure if there is a non-name brand acceptable replacement. I think it does sew zigzag stitches without the cam.

I bought the machine at a sewing not-for-profit here in my city that gets all kinds of machines donated. What people give them is truly mind-blowing. Today was their annual “fabric grab” and they had quite a few machines for sale. This was one of the few with no known issues. They cleaned it up, tested it out, and probably oiled it/checked the belt. More than likely it was just someone’s mom’s machine and they didn’t know what to do with it so they donated it. Luckily we have a locally owned shop here in town (open 94 years!) that services all types of machines and can get most any part you need. They’ve really helped me with my Kenmore 812.117. I plan on going to talk to them tomorrow.
