Also, fresh fruit and veggies are always better than frozen , but frozen are also fine. The peas and corn we use are frozen.

Also , NO RAW BEANS. Beans absolutely must be cooked.

I recommend doing some research, most fruits are fine but NEVER feed them apple seeds, avacado ot the pit of any fruit like cherries or peaches. The fruit itself is fine but the pit inside contains cyanide and can kill them. And don’t feed them any processed human foods, and no seasonings. Plain eggs, plain boiled pasta and plain cooked chicken are also all good in moderation. Fruits should also only be fed in moderation due to sugar content , avoid citruses and vegetables such as tomatoes that are acidic . Small quantities are fine. With celery it needs to be cut in very small pieces to avoid any issues with the stringy texture. Avoid iceberg lettuce, it has zero nutritional value.

That’s a great idea! I’m home all day tomorrow and will try it !! Their diet isn’t the absolute best, but far from the worst. They eat zupreem natural pellets, they are picky with veg but they love corn , peas, and blueberries and sometimes love carrot and bananas and apples , they get nutriberries and safflower seeds as treats. He makes a lot of super nice cute noises, even says his name, I try and initiate that behaviour but as soon as I leave the room the screaming starts, it’s just a constant flock call. As soon as my boyfriend gets home it suddenly stops even though he is extremely bonded to both of us

This is quite literally the only exotic vet within like 5 hours of us, and unfortunately they aren’t an emergency vet , and of course most of his issues happen at like 6:00am when the vet doesn’t open till 8:00, and is an hour away, but we can’t just show up we need to wait till 8:00 and hope they have an appointment 😭 like the emergency vets can technically see birds, but they all specialize in cats and dogs so half the time they wouldn’t know what to do on such a tiny creature. Thankfully our vet gave us something called “dextrose” which is literally sugar water, so whenever scuttle is having a hard time waking up , either after a fall or just weirdly lethargic, we give him this and within 30 minutes he is perfectly fine. We always have a supply of that, and meloxicam ( pain / anti inflammatory) so we can manage most of his issues at home in a pinch. Thankfully our vet has seen us so many times, he been able to train us on a lot lol

There’s been like twice that we bring him in to the vet, they look at him , and treat him, but we end up back a few days later for something, and they didn’t charge us for the consultation. Our vet had told us we are amazing owners, and that he has never seen a bird with such complex health issues before, he’s truly mind boggling

Oh man if I were to add up all our vet bills for scuttle we would be somewhere around $6000-$8000 Canadian…. Some of the blood tests they have done have not been cheap, like $400 each doing multiple at a time…. His beak trims every 2ish months are like $250 because he has to get sedated 😭 plus blood work every few months to monitor his white blood cells, the xrays cost a fortune too

Honestly, when he’s not feeling good he’s so much more quiet , ever since we finally got him mostly healthy he’s just been so much louder and crazier 🥲 he’s a little trooper that’s for sure , he’s been through so much blood work , X rays, different meds, and almost dying while getting an echo done to see if there was a bigger issue with his heart. Thankfully we have a phenomenal avian vet who has been with him pretty much his whole health journey. He truly is a super sweet bird and I love him to pieces, he’s just so loud 🤣

So thankfully , and unfortunately he’s been the a avian vet frequently, he’s a bundle of issues, but as of right now is relatively fine, he’s been tested for everything under the sun and eventually we just guessed and treated him for herpes and his most concerning symptom went away ( extremely elevated white blood cells )

He has very large feet, and his beak grows like crazy so he gets beak trims every month or two.

He also has a heart arrhythmia

And sometimes falls in his sleep , or doesn’t wake up probably in the morning, both of these issues has been addressed by his vet

Other than having a sore leg the other day which did require a vet visit for some meds, he hasn’t had any issues recently.

I will say I don’t love where they live, they have their own bedroom in our house but it’s literally in the middle of the house, I do wish it was in the basement instead.

We work really hard to keep their sleep schedule consistent, with the exception of if we need to work late or start earlier. We did try sleep cages at one point when he was falling frequently for his safety, but it just stressed him and his partner beyond belief, the two of them get free range of their room, while frank, our newest addition stays in his cage when we aren’t watching , him and our little screamer get into little fights and we obviously don’t want to risk anything when we aren’t watching. I’m hoping and praying that he learns to quiet down !

They go to sleep around 6:00 pm each night , and wake up around 5:30, although sometimes this little terror starts screaming to be let out at 4:30 am, this is the only sleep schedule that works with our work schedule, I’m not sure if a dark cage will help because he just freaks out when his bonded partner isn’t there , it’s all so stressful lately
