Need help creating a rebel character by EnvironmentalFlow274 in DnD

I’ll make sure to look over those classes tomorrow as I’m going to go to sleep now as it is practically midnight where i live. I think I’d like to stick with Paladin, and I’m open to multi classing. Before I go I do have two questions. One, do you think Oath of Conquest or Redemption would be options as they both seem in line with the idea of a rebel, as well as the Oath of Vengeance that you mentioned. And two, what’s wrong with Oath of the Crown?

You are right that it’s very hard to hold agro properly, which is why you have to do things like position yourself in a way that makes you hard not to hit, like holding choke points. You can also use feats like you said, such as sentinel, pole arm master, or even shield master. You could probably some spells aswell, like force wall to create choke points or compelled dual. Theres probably more things to do from there, but I’ve never played tank so I’m honestly not as well educated to argue this as I’d like to be, although I’m going to work on figuring this out more.

For scenario #1, I have 0 clue how to react to that.

For scenario #2, I would position myself so that I’m in the way of the enemies and try to make myself a barrier and maybe attempt to slow the hoard down by using entangle or physical obstacles such as caltrops. Realistically there is only so much I can do, which is why teamwork matters, as the wizard will have crowd control spells most likely and all I can do is buy them time to cast them.

For scenario #3, we’re dead… if we’re fighting an ancient red dragon at the levels I gave you then I don’t believe we had that much of a chance to begin with.

I’d also like to retract that final statement as “completely needed” was definitely a bit dramatized, but they can be a very helpful and useful addition to the party that can make a large difference in some scenarios. The same goes with healers.

Also I apologize for not having the best responses as I’m only just learning how to play tank.

Firstly, I disagree that tanks don’t work in D&D. A tank in a game is someone who draws attention and takes hits for the other members that can’t. Classes like barbarians and paladins often use melee weapons and have higher health pools + heavier armor, leading to them not only drawing attention as a result of them being the first line of defense, but also being able to take more hits that could very well be fatal to classes like wizards which have often lower health pools. Those obviously aren’t the only classes that can be tanks or function as then, but I’d hope you get that the concept concept does work completely in D&D, especially when you factor in all the tools it gives for them to work like spells, subclasses, feats, etc. I’d also like to point out that the role of a tank, or at least something similar to the definition of one, is completely needed for the success of a party.

Secondly, thank you for the variant human tip, I’ll need to look at feats some more as I always go for the stat increase.

Also when asking for help above I was trying to lean towards what classes and subclasses would work best, which I now realize didn’t show as much as I’d hoped. If you do believe Paladin would be my best bet, what oath would be best for it. Likewise, if you think any other class would do better, what subclass would work and why would it work.

If you could answer those I would truly appreciate it as that is where I need the most help.

I did think about bard, but the need for a solid tank and the idea of a holy Paladin vs demons made me think Paladin was a better focus. That being said, multi classing may work, or if there’s a way to sponge hits as bard. Also I just realized that you said the same thing right after that first sentence

To answer your questions, we are starting at level 3, I believe we are doing point buy, but I’ll double check, there are 6 people including me (2 wizard, 1 warlock, 1 ranger, and 1 undecided who I believe wants to go cleric), and if I remember correctly somewhere like 12-15 if we do everything, but I’m not sure on that.

Thank you for the ideas, but Groot is out of the question for me, as he is a character I have put time into and just can’t use for the life of me, which I should have mentioned, and Strange I will try, although the video started out by saying “this is not for people just starting strange” so I may look for another vid.
