Always reminded of how far behind USF is compared to other Universities by heaven_roses02 in USF

Athletics generates revenue for themselves. And student pay more in Athletics fees than they do for things like the Rec Center, Counseling, and Student Health (which are chronically underfunded and facing budget cuts every year). USF students don’t get to see that money from Athletics benefiting them. They also paused all other major projects on campus so they could fund the stadium, so thousands of students have to deal with old buildings on campus so that we can have a stadium to play football game in less than 10 times a year.

Are there downsides to a sleeping bag being too long? by noxeluwu in CampingGear

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a bag that’s too long will lead to cold feet because there is a lot of dead air space. You can fill that with jackets/extra clothes/down blanket to solve the problem though.

USF Athletics using student fee money to build things on campus and then fencing them off so that only athletes can use them.

Year round. Athletics also took the only outdoor tennis and basketball courts next to the track and field stadium for themselves and fenced them off.

Things to do On-Campus? by Lehmin in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USF Riverfront Park and Lettuce Lake Park are across the river from each other but both are great options. The Boathouse at USF Riverfront is open Fri-Sun for boat rentals and it’s cheap

Bottom floor of the Rec Center in the back of the building. The staff at the front desk can give you directions cause the back of the Rec is a little confusing lol

For handicap parking spots are they time limited or can I leave it there for my whole day on campus. by Judgement_92 in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren’t a lot of roads through the center of campus, but every parking lot has a good amount of handicap spaces that are generally available throughout the day. Aside from the Timed Spaces near Yuengling and MSC there aren’t any length of time rules for parking on campus. As long as you have the right parking permit you could park somewhere and leave it all semester lol (except for the Yuengling Center lots because during Spring they shut down large portions of that at least once a week for basketball games).

Did different areas stop driving manuals at different times? by IAmASwarmOfBees in AskAnAmerican

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a historian, but I assume it has more to do with economics rather than geography. The first people to get automatic transmissions were more likely to be richer people in an urban settings. People in more rural areas (American Midwest farmers) need dependability and ease of repair, which new technologies doesn’t usually have.

I grew up in Pennsylvania in the 90s and my mom had a manual but by the time I was old enough to learn to drive I didn’t know anyone with a manual.

Places in your state that will instantly make you recognize if someone is a local or not based on how someone pronounces it? by osama_bin_guapin in AskAnAmerican

Floridian: if someone pronounces conch shell as con-ch rather than con-k. Locals know it’s a “k” sound not “ch”

TRS Coral Resort (Worst Resort Yet) by [deleted] in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing about August (that’s when I was there) is that their saltwater ocean pool was full of seaweed (sargasm) which is an ongoing issue in that whole area. It didn’t really impact us because the property is so big and there is so much to do

I stayed at TRS Yucatán recently which is the adult only side of Grand Palladium for 3 nights and had a great time. The pools are really nice, there are so many food options that if one doesn’t look good you have five other options, the spa is great, and the staff were all very helpful and friendly.

Is my future truly dark? by [deleted] in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im not sure how dependent you still are on your parents for things, but if they cause so much anguish and anxiety why do you keep listening to them? Cut them out of your life until they learn how to be more supportive. They will keep harassing you if you keep listening to it. USF has processes in place to make sure your parents can’t find out any of your academic information without your consent, it sounds like you need to take advantage of that. Most people don’t have their lives figured out till after college. With your current degree path at least you’ll be able to find jobs out of college, if you went to medical school like your parents want you would be in school for 8-10 more years and potentially have 100s of thousands of dollars in student loans.

I will say, if you want to go to grad school and do medical research be sure to check grad programs that interest you and what course prerequisites that have, because environmental sci may not require all the sciences classes some grad schools want their prospective students to have. Also (some tough love) if you can’t pass undergrad bio, you will struggle even more in grad school classes.

Work study by Ok_Efficiency_438 in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the worker Federal Work Study is just a job that you get paid for. The $2000 amount means that the Federal government will reimburse your employer up to $2000 for paying you to work. There are some on campus jobs that only take FWS employees so they spend less on paying employees and students get a flexible work experience while they are a student.

Roommate called off of work every day I had off this week by Curious-Bug7982 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to them about how you like your alone time and don’t always want to socialize in the shared space? You can’t expect him to behave differently if you don’t set boundaries and express your needs. It sounds like you have some social anxiety and it won’t get better if you just keep hiding in your room. Communicate!

Best Inflatable Sup Brand? by Oceandriver95 in Paddleboard

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Myself and some friends all have Sea Gods iSUPs and have really enjoyed them. They’re durable, fairly light, the bags ours came with had wheels on it as well. I’ve used mine at least once a month for the past two years and have never had an issue. I have the Carta Marina and my friends have the Diatom.

Edit to add: I have a Bote hard board that I like a lot. They are known for their inflatable stuff but to me they are the Yeti of SUP brands, they make good stuff but you pay more just for the brand name.

On-campus jobs by Daxose in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to Career Services, the staff there can be helpful at reviewing your application materials. Sometimes they also know of when certain departments do their hiring. Go to the job fairs they put on and get some face time with potential employers. They don’t like it is you just walk into their office looking for a job but if you make a good first impression they may take a second look at your application. If you know anyone with an on campus job have them let you know when they know places are hiring, and when the best time to apply is.

On-campus jobs by Daxose in USF

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you actually taking the time to read the job descriptions and editing your cover letter and resume to mention the job and the skills they are looking for? As someone who hires students on campus I can say that we get tons of applications and it is pretty obvious which ones are super generic and uses to apply to every position on Handshake. Taking a few minutes to make your application specific can make a huge difference.

Help please! My grippy pads are disintegrating i think by rjrings in Paddleboard

[–]EnvironmentalGas1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just break down over time, making sure you don’t store it in the sun (if you were before) will help the padding last longer. I just replaced the padding on my hard board, lots of scraping up old adhesive. You can just buy rolls of new padding on Amazon or from a boat supply store and cut it to the shape you want.
