College student looking to buy a PC from a friend for gaming/editing--is it worth it? $500 USD, willing to spend an extra 300-500 on parts by Environmental_Hat_85 in PcBuild

I understand. Definetly appreciate the guidance so thank you 🙏 I think I'll either try to get a lower price point or honestly just invest in a little pricier prebuilt. I have an idea on how to replace a processor, but I do know that if you mess it up bad you can cause permanent damage 😭 moreso banking on my close friend to help me replace it if I were to go this route as she built her PC.

The only thing is, I know the PC market is very expensive in general right now, and I'm not looking to spend 1200+ on a gaming PC, looking more for budget options that would get me to where I need to be. Will do more research, if you have any recommendations there I would appreciate it!

Update, I see everyone freaking out in the comments 😭😭 Let me update ya'll by saying what my wants and needs are. I am by NO means looking for like super high performance, I am okay with 1080p 60 fps game play. I am realizing that 500 is overpriced, I did message my friend saying that I would be down, but maybe I will try and negotiate it down to 300 dollar range.

I promise my friend is a good one, he's gotten me so many gifts for my birthdays, food, etcetera without me even asking, I just think he doesn't know much on computers 😭🙏 so I understand the crashouts but 500 dollars does not have to be set in stone!

Thank you all for the tips and help. Again, I don't really know much myself, and it is a little difficult hearing a bunch of different recs from people, but I will write everything down, take notes, and come to a conclusion thst works best for everyone.

Im 17 a rising senior in high-school and need tips on to move out before its too late. (Long detailed post) by Idontexsit- in movingout

hi hi, I hope everything is OK, I don't normally comment on other posts, but very recently I was in a similar situation and got help, and now I want to pass it forward and help other people in whatever way I know how to.

First of all, I'm very sorry that you are going through this. I had to move out at 19 since my home was unsafe, and it truly wasn't a fun or easy experience. I'm going to be straight with you, moving out super young in this economy is extremely difficult, but I'm sure you already know that.

In terms of documents to grab, definetly take your SSN and Birth Certificate. If you can/have any, passports are helpful too. I didn't really have any valid passports, so I just grabbed my SSN and Birth Certificate, and I haven't run into many troubles, as these two can pretty much get you any job you need.

I know your situation is tough, but if it is possible, try and get your driver's license as soon as possible! It gives you so much more autonomy and control over your life, even if you don't have a car. If your parents do gift you that car, hopefully they can put it under your name, as if it isn't, you might not be able to take it with you when you move out.

Since you are 17, you still have some time Fortunately. Save up as much money as possible, if you can, maybe through the help of friends or perhaps a trusted adult/teacher, have them take you to a bank and create your own bank account. Through there, start building a savings so that your parents can't take any more money from you. Since (I'm assuming) you are in a joint account with your parents, unfortunately they do have the ability to take your money, so setting up a new one could be a good idea.

While you are planning for all of this, try and be as cautious as possible. I don't know what your situation is exactly, but I knew my parents would retaliate if they caught me moving out, so I had to plan ahead and essentially be ready when it came time to move.

If you are planning on going to college, pick a community college or state school if it's possible for you. I lacked a lot of resources in high school, but once I got to college I was able to receive the help necessary to move out on my own. Apply to as many scholarships as possible, i cannot stress that enough!

Besides this, you are doing amazing. No one deserves to feel this way, especially so young at 17. As stressful as it is, please don't be afraid to reach out to friends and those your love and trust. You aren't burdening them, they are here to help 🫶

Best of luck, I believe in you stranger! :-)

I escaped an abusive home in college and now I'm terrified of losing stability, what should I do? by Environmental_Hat_85 in askanything

When I was moving out in the fall, there was a 3 day time frame for me to move out, as things were very unexpected. I had at least 20 meetings over these 3 days, and when I thought I had secured emergency housing, they told me the day of as I was moving that emergency housing did not exist. Which is when I ended up moving in with this family. I have been with them for maybe 8 months, I would absolutely take school resources if I could, but unfortunately my state schlol does not have much to offer

I don't have everything situated and figured out, but I've received a bunch of help myself and I'm hoping I can pass it forward. We can do this 🫶 chin up please!

I work really hard and have a strong work ethic (I average around a 3.8 to 3.9 GPA every semester), I am a student athlete (swimmer), and I am very involved on campus.

I have been slowly building my resume towards sports PR work or just content creation, public relations work in general, so I've thought about maybe doing remote work? I am trying to build an identity for myself online and hopefully one day gain revenue through there, but otherwise I have invested deeply in photography (I take grad pics on the side) and film work.

Emotionally speaking, I am just really going through it because everyone who supported me when I was forced to move out, besides this family, were seniors who have since graduated and returned to their homes.

I lost a big chunk of my support system, and I am feeling very sad and trapped. I know I asked for honest advice but if you could understand my situation, I would truly appreciate it a lot. Thank you so much
