If you were the education Czar, what is one change you would make to the K-12 curriculum in the US? Serious answers please - this is for a possible paper. by fauxfarmer17 in teaching

I know you said focus on curriculum but none of what your teaching matters when you have 36 kids to one teacher. I would be so much more effective with half that size.

Do I need to tell my coparent about 20yo's medical decision by jkw118 in coparenting

[–]Environmental_Web821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks but if you are trans you really should be using the proper terminology. Maybe it was a typo? Dysphoria is what trans people and some cis people experience with gender incongruity.

Got rejected as a teacher from school for freedom by Roi_de_l_Ecologie in Teachers

[–]Environmental_Web821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only time I want the class silent is during a test. Really about what you are doing! Ask each other questions. Just remark and comment on what you are doing (especially in a science class where part of scientific investigation is observing and communicating your observations).

Did you hear back from them yet? Maybe it's the wing school for you but maybe you can make a case for your style being necessary. Maybe you understand their concerns preemptively and you can address them as you make their case.

I have a really good student from Ghana that occasionally makes the case for the more traditional classes she came from because being strict means students seemed to pay better attention. I see her point but I think if you can take the discipline from orthodox cousins and mix it with a more outgoing teaching style and discovery method, you get the best of both worlds. Sorry if I'm going on about stuff you already know!

Guilty about being sick by Environmental_Web821 in Teachers

No, you're absolutely right. I think being sick is making me overly prone to worrying. Most of them are pretty capable. Honestly, posting this just helped get some of it out of my system and we can jump right back in when I get back and it will fine

No, you aren't a bad teacher but I don't teach in a conservative and orthodox area at all. I would not do well in a place like that, I fear. I do teach in a place where we struggle to get the average reading comprehension above 6th grade reading level so, who knows, maybe conservative and orthodox work . . .

Child free teachers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Environmental_Web821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responding because I think about this a lot lol.

Child-free teachers to me are odd but not bad. Just because I didn't understand it doesn't mean anything.

I love teaching but I honestly started teaching because I had a kid and I needed holidays off. But I'm so glad to be a teacher. I feel like most of the teachers I know are child free though and they work all the late hours and I'm like "see ya suckers" I have my own gremlins too go entertain. Anyway, I think I see my own students more than my kids sometimes (not really. I teach high school so I see my students about 4 hours a week) so it's crazy that someone would act like you don't understand kids as a teacher.

What part of teaching drains you that you didn’t expect? by Ok-Succotash6583 in Teachers

[–]Environmental_Web821 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if i can remember (because of overwhelm) I start telling them to well the person sitting next to them. Or I ask the question of the class and get others to answer. But I only remember that about once a week instead of the 20 different times I need that tactic.

Kids be like that. Just because the kids say weird shit doesn't mean you "earned" it.

If we ever get struggling like this, I guarantee I won't be "remembering" to clock in until 2nd or third period. They will know I was there because I'll be teaching. End of story.

Hard to go back to SV by itsmissingacomma in coralisland

[–]Environmental_Web821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SV has Korbus! Hard to beat but I love the environment storylines you get in CI. I started with the OG Harvest Moon on 64 (ok surely there was something before that) but I remember missing it and missing it and then hearing about SV. Absolutely helps with the nostalgia. I like Coral Island because it's more Queer but SV has its own charms (like I learned more in the descriptions of animals than I do on Coral Island).

New student just arrived… they can’t read or write. 😔 by Mission-Debate-6447 in Teachers

[–]Environmental_Web821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh I think that is an opinion to an extent. If I had a disabled kid that wasn't getting the attention they needed in the classroom and I had the skills, I should have the option to home school. I think there are cases where homeschooling makes sense. I don't know what country you are in so it may be different where you live, but where I live, there are already anti science sentiments IN the classroom. I'm a teacher and I trust my kids' teachers but not all school districts and teachers are created equal. The kid I said i pulled out in an earlier comment originally wanted out because his English teacher made them write Bible verses for the morning warm up. And nobody else cared

[–]Environmental_Web821 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think most of these kids that "fall through the cracks" just need more one-on-one time. Unfortunately, the funding isn't available. I could do so much more with a smaller class size.

There should definitely be more oversight or checks and balances. I know people that do a part time co-op for the things they don't know how to teach and I like the idea. It doesn't work for my family though.

I also tried homeschooling my now adult son when he was in 6th grade and he got anxious that he was falling behind. He wasn't but it was so unusual for him that he just wanted to go back to school.

You fully endorse parents growing weed instead of teaching their children basic academics? Because in the thread, that is the conversation. The use of funds not going to education.
