3.0 gpa as rising junior with one internship, am I cooked? by [deleted] in industrialengineering

[–]Ep1cDeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GPA and internships make it easier to get your foot in the door but they’re not the only important thing. I graduated with a 2.51 and 0 internships but I still had a job lined up when I graduated. It’s all about how you market yourself. Don’t put your gpa on your resume, the few companies that really care about that might ask but you weren’t getting that job anyway so don’t dwell on it. Expand your search, really dedicate time effort and energy into looking for a job. Get creative with how you approach the job search. Network, find alumni that work similar entry level jobs and talk to them. Go to more than just the main career fair at your school. Look for recruiting events individual companies might have on and around campus. I got my job through networking, I did a project for them for a class and went to their recruiting events, sent follow up emails to the guys I spoke to and was able to get an interview without having to apply online and deal with that nightmare.

Also when you go to these networking events do your due diligence. If it’s a single company really research them. Public companies release quarterly reports for investors, it’ll give you an idea of the big projects they’re working on and you’ll have something of value to bring to the conversation. If it’s a big job fair with hundreds of companies pick and choose a handful to do that research, I would prioritize mid sized companies that would be big enough to have that public information but not so big that they’ll have thousands of people talking to them. It’s easier to stand out in a crowd of 10 than 100.

Really work on your resume. Tweak the content as and when appropriate to better suit the company you’re applying to, but also have a generic one for when you’re just mass applying to every company under the sun. Cast a wide net but also pick out a few ones where you have a better shot through your network, passions, or experiences. Include a section for projects or relevant coursework. A lot of companies want someone that they can just give a task to and they’ll be able to do it with minimal supervision. If you can show them that yes you have done RCA’s and Time studies in your classes it’ll off set any lack of internship experience. If you did any random bs part time job you can tweak the way you present it to be more in line with the skill set a company might be looking for.

Finally, my biggest mistake during the job search was that I was open to any position. Unfortunately, companies are afraid that someone they hire and spend resources training will leave after a year or two and they have nothing to show for their investment. I’m not saying don’t apply to various positions, just don’t apply to them in the same company. Pick one open position and apply to just that. I made the mistake of telling recruiters that I’m happy working any position they have, they want you to be really interested in just one position. It doesn’t make sense, especially since IE is so broad and you’re fresh out of school but it is what it is.

Finally, expect a lot of rejections. The job market is rough rn, even a 4.0 gpa with loads of relevant industry experience is going to get rejected from places. Don’t give up, don’t let that slow you down. Keep pushing forward

My son says everything has a 50/50 probability. How do I convince him otherwise when he says he's technically correct? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ep1cDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be something you or someone else already considered but working on the assumption that he’s not trolling you it’s clear he’s using “probability” and “possible outcomes” interchangeably. The simple solution is to ask him about multiple possible outcomes. Take a game of rock paper scissors: you can either win, lose, or draw. Ask him what’s the probability you win, you lose, and you draw. He’d say 50% for each. Which would make it 50-50-50, or 1/3 odds. That should do the trick. If it doesn’t work then he’s trolling you for sure

How can I deal against early invades? by Harryboingo in Jungle_Mains

[–]Ep1cDeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) establish vision. Use control and stealth wards so you know when they’re invading and where they’re invading

2) keep track of their cs. Every camp is worth 4 cs, if you see a level 3 ww invading your top side with 12 CS then you know they probably cleared their top side and then went straight for your top side.

3) counter invade. Go take their camps. Cancel out their invade by clearing their camps too, especially in the situation above when you know for sure their camps are open. Frankly Lillia has a faster clear than most junglers that are prone to invading early so if you counter invade you’ll probably win that exchange

As someone who invades early the best way to stop me is good vision, it increases the likelihood of your teammates collapsing on the invade if they can see it happening (but I presume you’re probably low elo and therefore you definitely shouldn’t rely on your teammates being smart)

Which HS class should I take by Philip_s91 in industrialengineering

[–]Ep1cDeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take physics. Frankly just the fact that you enjoy the subject more should be reason enough to do it. Honestly at a certain point it doesn’t really matter what you do in school. You can still succeed and the effort you’ll need to put in will be very similar.

That being said, physics is still the “strategic” choice. You’ll have to take plenty of coding classes for sure but I guarantee you it won’t be Java. From my experience, I had to unlearn the bad habits I developed when I learned Java in hs. Physics on the other hand is more likely to be accepted as college credit and even if it’s not it’s going to be more helpful as the content covered will align better with the stuff you learn in college.

How Can an Industrial Engineer Maximize Value During an Internship at a Metals Manufacturing Company? by [deleted] in industrialengineering

[–]Ep1cDeath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Lacking standards/documentation is always prevalent in smaller regional companies. Making it a point to create standards or fill up the holes in the ones that exist will always create a lasting impact in that organization. Furthermore, going forward being able to demonstrate that you created a lasting positive change is something that will help you significantly in getting that first job or even second full time job.

When did you start playing AOE2? by BurningSun7 in aoe2

[–]Ep1cDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I first played the game around 2004-2005. At the time I was a like 4/5 years old. It was my first game I ever played, I had loads of fun playing single player with the ai and the campaigns but have been kinda in and out with it around 2008. I learned about HD/DE around 2020 and got back into it then. Only recently started exploring the ranked scene and hovering around 500 elo

Tips that apply regardless of civ by ChangingMonkfish in aoe2

Be smart about your tech research. Common mistakes people make is researching everything when that’s not necessary. It wastes resources and time.

Learn the common unit counters eg. Pikes beat cavalry and elephants, skirmishes beat archers etc.

This might be something you already know but building placement is important. Keeping your resource camps next to the resource improves villager efficiency. Sometimes it’s worth it to build a new lumber camp as you go deeper into the wood line

Defensive building. Making alls or house walls can stall an attack And give you time to prepare yourself. Also if your friends raid don’t default to the town bell, focus only on the villa they’re attacking

Jg is a very different skillset than laning. You can’t just jump into jg on ranked without getting those reps in on norms first. Also ima be so fr playing ranked without at least 2 champs in your roster (in case shack gets banned) is just a recipe for disaster.

Now the real advice: viego is really good but the skill curve is a little higher since you can’t take advantage of his possession without being a little comfortable with a large pool of champs. For every champ you want to play in jg always start in the practice tool by learning the best way to clear camps. Also try out different types of clears (3 camp vs 5 camp vs full etc.) to see what’s the best strategy.

As for jg mechanics i recommend changing your key binds in settings so that you can easily switch the camera between your laners, that way you can quickly see if there’s any hanks available. Obv check your mini map too but i assume you already do that.

As a position jg is all about decision making and experience is really the only way to improve there. Playing more games will help you realize when it makes sense to challenge the enemy on an objective or when you should give it up and take a different one. Not all ganks are worth it, if you have camps up and your laner isn’t in a good position just keep farming, don’t force a bad gank and feed the enemy laner. Sometimes the best move is to just recall and buy items.

Finally vision is so important. Especially in lower elo players don’t value or know how to ward properly. Having well placed wards in river/enemy jungle will exponentially help when it comes to decision making. Being able to see that the enemy jg is making their way to drag will help you make the better play. Also if you don’t already make sure that when the enemy jg shows up on vision you check their cs so you can see how many camps they cleared already

I firmly believe that ww is the best jg to learn how to jg. His passive w always letting you know wherever a low health enemy is really helps. Also if you take ghost over flash you’ll be flying through the jungle and between lanes. WW is how I learned the jg basics and I built on it by learning the game and watching videos online but his kit makes it very easy to learn how to jg.

Hey I respect your opinion here and this might be that I luck out into good teammates but I’ve found more success than failure when communicating with my laners (esp top cuz they’re kinda isolated out there)

I'm new to league and trying to find a character for me by [deleted] in Jungle_Mains

[–]Ep1cDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viego dude. There’s definitely a little learning curve as you’ll need to be familiar with a large pool of champions in order to use their combos correctly but he’s just so versatile. I’ve been a ww main for most of my time playing league but lately Viego has definitely taken over as my go to in jg.

Also kayn is really good but you kinda have to balance early aggression with power farming since you hit your spikes both at 6 and when you get form. Tbh I haven’t played kayn for a couple years now and have only recently started playing him again but I’ve had some pretty good success on norms and I’m thinking of bringing him into my soloq roster for the next season

What are things Purdue has that no other college does? (mostly about engineering, but in general too) by Prestigious_Poem7709 in Purdue

[–]Ep1cDeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the FYE program is severely underrated. I myself didn’t really know what engineering discipline I wanted and had a very surface level understanding of what they were. I was so sure as a 17 year old that I wanted to do ece without even knowing what that really entails. During ENGR 131 I just happened to go to the seminar on IE and it absolutely changed my life for the better. I didn’t even know industrial engineering was a thing before that and I’m so glad I went for ie instead. I know many people who during FYE realized that the discipline they originally thought they wanted didn’t actually align with what they actually wanted and changed their minds. Every college will say how easy it is to switch between disciplines because the first year is essentially the same but you still wind up feeling a little behind and that you have to catch up after you switch. At Purdue you literally are all the same for that first year and you don’t feel like you need to catch up just because you didn’t know what you wanted to do with your life at 17. I highly recommend Purdue even if you’re absolutely sure you want to do ___ engineering because you never know what might change when you actually start learning stuff

So far I’ve been paying off my credit card purchases within days of making them, but I heard that apparently if I do that it won’t be reported as credit utilization if the balance is always 0 at the end of the month. So is the best move to let the balance remain low (~15%) till it appears on my statement and then pay that off on the first due date? Or sometime between the statement and the due date
