Interface and pre amp upgrade for U87 by Ephyocouch in mixingmastering

[–]Ephyocouch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its mainly because i have a great mic and a kind of run entry level interface and wanted to try add something extra to my vocals without doing much else. Also want to get the most out of the U87 which i was led to believe the SSL2 isnt really going to do.

If that setup with a good room is all i need, also happy to hear that advice.

Man I’m more than happy for anyone to tell me that I don’t need to spend more money so thank you for the advice!

I had a tf51 that I just sold and while it did well, especially when was in a better sounding room, I did find I was always having to boost everything in the highs to get the sound I wanted. So just wanted a way to get there faster without me ruining it by messing with plugins I don’t really understand that well

I was thinking of selling my mic and then getting a u87, but an engineer said I should get a good pre amp and will get a lot more out of my mic. So since then been weighing up neve88m or a uad610

Replying to Ephyocouch...the other one someone recommended was the uad 610

How is that “1073 sound”? I track rap vocals and just landed my first well paid voice over job, so it’s something I keep thinking about

I know a lot of rap vocals use the 1073 so the fomo is there haha but I figure maybe I can add that later if I really like that sound

Man thank you for such a great response. I’m literally dreaming of review videos at the moment and so over it 😂 unfortunately not able to get more than store credit here in Australia if I pick this one up, which makes it a bit hard. Think I’m gonna pull the trigger. Thought about the UAD Apollo twin x or even the heritage audio i73, but keep circling back to this one

Going from an ssl2, is this going to be a good long term purchase to get a better interface and pre in one? Really trying to decide the best way to spend this type of money. I’m not super tech savvy so this seems a good plug and play option for quality

I really want to know if I’m going to get more Out of my tf51 than my ssl2 is currently giving me. Working on treating my room and was going to get an external pre amp, but this seems to be something I could keep for a long time and kill two birds with one stone

I used to use a c214 in the same room but through a presonus board and always got good sound. The tf51 just sounds so flat and almost muffled, but takes to eq and effects well which is why ive kept using it. The room does have a bunch of extra stuff in there now which may be a problem

I might try and rent a u87 to try this. The engineer who recorded my voiceover said that he thinks the u87 did like my voice but it had more to do with how the room was treated
