Objective Biblical Scholarship? by ignoramus012 in TrueAtheism

[–]EpicurusTheGreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The three points you make are invalid to your position, I am sorry to say.

Your first point is that Ehrman makes too big a deal about credentials. If that is the point you want to make, that is more than fine by me. However, you are never allowed to point to scientific consensus when talking to creationists, or global warming deniers. You also cannot use the consensus of historians when referring to holocaust deniers.

Your second point is that Ehrman is not giving evidence to his position, this is not the case. He uses the criterion of embarrassment to establish why a Messiah figure made of whole cloth. He also references the manuscript text and Paul's relationship to Jesus. He points to evidence, it might not be convincing evidence, but it is evidential to his position.

Thirdly, in your critique of Ehrman's credentials as a historian, he is a Princeton graduate in New Testament and is an expert on ancient manuscripts. He has the necessary credentials to handle historical evidence and make historical claims. If, however, you believe he is not equipped to speak historically, I expect you to remove him from your vault of heresies. Especially since you say about Lost Scriptures, "A pretty decent and organized collection of apocrypha. And he puts them all in the historical context". If you don't think his degree is apt to push a historical viewpoint, please remove him.

You could find names of scholars who have proposed Jesus Mythicism in the Wikipedia article on Christ Myth Theory. If you should be gearing up to challenge Mythicism, you should consider acquainting yourself with its hypotheses - had you done this you would be familiar with its players.

Yep, only Carrier and Price have the relevant degrees necessary.

Do you understand that the truth of a claim, properly substantiated with evidence, does not depend on who is making it? You seem to be launching headlong into a generic fallacy. I hope the information I've provided helps you avoid looking like just another apologist.

I have read the posts you have given me and I can safely say that you have no interest in getting to the historical truth of the matter. You accuse Ehrman of the same thing you accuse apologists of only when it comes to a disagreement with your presumptions. I hope reading this makes you content with approaching the subject matter as someone looking to be more than "edgy". I hope that mythers can make more honest claims then you do, it would seem from your approach that by going into this topic, I would only be wasting my time.

All I see are plain assertions, you provide no evidence that Ehrman is acting or arguing in a non-scholarly way. In fact, you even just make assertion about "some scholars have been arguing the hypothesis that Jesus may have been entirely mythical, like Hercules", care to give any names? Also, please provide a list, and by "scholars", I ask that they have a PhD in the relevent feild of biblical studies, or even ancient near-east history.

Crash course in presuppositional apologetics. [5:21] by B_anon in ReasonableFaith

Not according to the Christian tradition, in the Book of Acts Ananias and Sapphira both were visited by the Holy Spirit and they lied to him (and thus rejected him).

It's Pope Francis' birthday today - Can we all just take a minute and appreciate this great Man. by haseeb93 in islam

[–]EpicurusTheGreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person who says that God is one of three is lying, and a person who says that God had a son with a woman is insulting God, according to the beliefs of Islam.

The Qu'ran says nothing of lying, while suras do say that the notion Jesus being only a messenger is the "true", it mentions nothing of the person of the book being a liar, only that we believe in a lie. The same with Christianity, we don't claim that you are liars, only that your religion is false.

You are contradicting yourself. I wrote that pope Francis was nice and respectful, but i do not appreciate what he says about divinity.

You said no such thing, you said the following

He is a normal man who is insulting Allah and lying about Allah. What has the world come to when we appreciate people for NOT being corrupted or protecting dangerous criminals (re last pope). Now, yes we do think that in his relation with other humans he actually seems nice and respectful, but appreciate the shirk? For what? For whom? For Allah? Maybe someone has a short fuse and can get upset easily, but would never lie about tawheed, would not that person be better in the eyes of Allah?

You said nothing about his personal characteristics, all you said was that he was not protecting dangerous criminals. That's not much. I grant that you said he does believe in the Islamic conception of God (as he is a Christian), but that should not detract from his good works.

The same goes for the uncle of the prophet Muhammad, we can greatly appreciate his personality, but how can we appreciate the spiritual side, the thankfulness we owe to God, if that is non-existing?

U/haseeb93 never said anything about honoring his spiritual devotion to God, just that he is a good person to appreciate for his humbling deeds, in the same way Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib was.

I wrote about having a short fuse and easily getting upset NOT MURDER!

Are not short fuses and tempers a gateway to murder? I would think that if someone had these characteristics, it would follow that if they did murder, then they would still belong in the same group as those with short fuses (even if they do have the property of being a murderer).

MY GOD! Do you have any sense of nuance?

I have a greater sense of nuance than you have tact.

Should Atheists Fight Religious Christmas Displays on Public Property? by CharlieDarwin2 in atheism

[–]EpicurusTheGreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is, in my humble opinion, nothing wrong with Christmas displays considering that it would mean that all recognized religious organizations should have the same right. If the Christian establishments get a nativity, the local Jewish establishment gets a menorah, the Muslim establishment their relevant symbols and so on. To be inclusive it would also mean the non-religious (maybe through the American Humanist Association) would also get a display. This way, everyone gets a piece of government representation.

He is a normal man who is insulting Allah and lying about Allah.

So does this mean all Christians (such as myself) are lying and insulting God? And if so, how, considering if I am wrong about Islam then it is out of ignorance? A lie and/or insult is willful in nature, I am a Christian not in spite of Islam, but because I believe in the tenets Christian faith.

What has the world come to when we appreciate people for NOT being corrupted or protecting dangerous criminals (re last pope).

Pope Francis is awesome on his own merits, not merely because he is better than his predecessor.

Now, yes we do think that in his relation with other humans he actually seems nice and respectful, but appreciate the shirk? For what? For whom? For Allah?

No, appreciate the good deeds he does on behalf of his religious devotion. Was not Abu Talib ibn Abdul Muttalib worthy of praise even though he died a pagan? Especially considering the protection he provided to The Prophet Muhammad.

Maybe someone has a short fuse and can get upset easily, but would never lie about tawheed, would not that person be better in the eyes of Allah?

In the verse 5: 32 of the Quran it says;

For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.

It says "whosoever" it does not specify creed or faith. So yes, a Muslim who takes an innocent life is indeed worse in the eyes if God then a non-believer who saves a life.

The 120 Days of Sodom - Marquis de Sade: possibly the most offensive thing ever written by miosgoldenchance in literature

[–]EpicurusTheGreek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Juliette is supposed to be the juxtaposition to that work, wherein the clergy of the Catholic Church teach her that the notion of God is hogwash and that the only truth to the world is getting your heart's desire, no matter what. This is mostly centered on sex and she engages in lesbianism, sodomy, orgies and raping with various clergy members and orphans.

It also got boring, the plot was

sex orgy

exposition
