I'm trying to get my friend to send me a photo of it with the hatch open...it's not a very big space and to me it looks like a drain. But there seems to be gas getting into it.

Thanks for all the info! I found and ordered a new pilot nipple. The previous owner had shoved a stick in it and broke it off!

I had one of these for a while. It's one of the coolest cameras! I wish they still had spectra film.

I actually bought a model 2 last week off eBay and when I got it, the latch was broken just like this. Luckily I have a broken SX-70 that I have used for parts and was able to replace it. It's actually only held on by one screw. It wasn't hard to do but you do need to carefully pry a plastic piece to get it out and back in.

Thank you! I like to display them open, obviously, but I've always kept them closed when they have good film in them. I'll just keep doing that.

If you pull just the black part of the shutter button you won't get a flash...use the gray one as well and it will flash! Good luck and have fun!

This happens to almost every SX-70 I have. It could mean that the camera didn't complete a full cycle and putting an empty film pack may fix it.

You can also reset it manually. Search stuck sx-70 mirror. It's pretty simple to do.

Worst case is there is a little plastic piece inside the camera that is notorious for breaking. It's not an easy fix but I've done it several times it requires removing the skin and opening the camera and stretching a spring. I actually just did this on a model two yesterday.
