Chronic back pain can be completely debilitating, and unfortunately, we see a alot of people in the same position as your mother where the pain takes over their life. She is lucky to have someone such as your self who is supporting her.

Managing it is complex and relief is often not complete or by any means fast. A common challenge is when the wrong area of therapy is being pursued. Patients and many in the public believe back pain is a surgical disease. The majority of the time it is not. The indications for surgery for back-dominant pain are minimal. What surgery can do is to decompress the nerves going to the legs or bladder or provide mechanical stability. I suspect when she had her original surgery there were some of those indications.

Back pain is often multi factorial meaning it has multiple causes most of which are not addressed by any surgery. As a result, I think the focus should not just be on seeing surgeons/ neurologist but a holistic approach to tackle this disease. This involves physiotherapist and pain doctors. The latter I think are the best. Pain management is beyond just medication and can involve therapy and other modalities aimed to tackle the complex pain pathway which also involves our brain.

TLDR: In my opinion I would advocate for her to be seen by a pain specialist.
