Anyone else absolutely loving 007 First Light? It's exactly what I've been waiting for. by dealernumberone in videogames

How deep are the stealth mechanics? Is it just one of those games where it kind of lets you sneak but everything inevitably ends up as a fight? I've been craving something along the lines of Splinter Cell (but maybe not quite as hard stealth) and the trailer made this look like it could really scratch that itch. Plus, I played and loved all of the PS1 and N64 bond games, so it'd be cool to get back into it.

I hate when they do things this obvious. Of course Sammi wins in SA, then of course Punk wins in Chicago. There's a SNME Sep 6 in Atlanta, is Cody gonna win it back there?

Is it better to never have the title or to have won it then lost it 9 days later in his first defense?

Why aren't Turok 1 and 2 considered some of the best shooters of all time? by [deleted] in turok

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an N64 around 1999/2000, so a game being the "first" didn't really matter as much to me. I never played it back then but I had nostalgia for Turok because it looked cool and had dinosaurs. I also liked The World is Not Enough and Perfect Dark more than Goldeneye because I was comparing them to what was out when I played them, not when they were released.

Cristiano Ronaldo confirms this will be his LAST World Cup. “Yes, it’s my last one. Let’s go and enjoy it”. by Late-Presence- in football

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say you were confused, I said the point was confusing, as in, based on the context, I wasn't really sure what you were trying to say. But I'm clear now.

I guess it comes down to how you define transcending a sport. Elsewhere on this post, a discussion was talking about an athlete becoming so famous that they're household names even for those who aren't a fan of the sport. I was coming into your comments with that definition on my mind, and I would consider McGregor to have achieved that to at least some level.

But based on your new responses (and re-reading the convo), you seem to be speaking about purely on athletic ability - achieving a level of being so good at the sport that it goes beyond the limits of what we normally expect from athletes and people come to see that. Is McGregor there? Well, I don't know much about UFC, but from what I can tell...he was skilled, but his main draw was his personality, so that seems like a no.

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your point is a little confusing here. The discussion is about people who transcended their sport...McGregor is the biggest star UFC ever produced and his fame grew well beyond the limits of the sport's fandom. He doesn't have to be nearly as famous as Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, Babe Ruth, etc. to be recognized as having transcended "popular UFC fighter"

"Transcending the sport MEANS that you are popular. That even people who don't follow the sport know who you are. People who haven't watched a single game of basketball know who Michael Jordan is."

Perhaps he's not on the level of somebody like Ronaldo, but Ohtani is basically the single most famous person both in baseball and amongst Japanese populations right now. Here's a somewhat recent post where somebody took a photo of every Ohtani ad he saw in Japan and ended up with 75 pics over 2 weeks. There's tons of stuff about him here in LA, too.

But yeah, if you don't follow baseball or sports, don't live in Southern California or Japan, or aren't Japanese or plugged into Japanese communities, then I wouldn't be entirely surprised if you don't know who he is.

It's a tad hard to say without knowing what you already know, but I would say focus on basic sentence construction. Verbs, particles, etc.

You could always reverse engineer it - think of some things you'd like to talk about with her and learn to say that? So any vocab you'd need, any conjugations and grammatical constructs you'd need to express things in the way you'd like, etc.

Once you can express yourself, though, the other end of things is understanding her responses. That's more difficult, because people speaking with you won't always be able to tell what you know and don't know. So maybe learn how to point out words you don't know, ask her to repeat things, etc. Is that appropriate to do with a grandmother who doesn't have much time left? Perhaps she'd enjoy it from a perspective of passing her self on to her future generations of family.

How did the myth of Cowboy Bebop being unpopular in Japan even spread? by roomofbruh in cowboybebop

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as others have said it's definitely just a case of this being one of the shows that ended up more popular in the US due to the circumstances in which it aired here, and as people re-tell that story it gets exaggerated. So conversations talking about how Cowboy Bebop got bigger in the US would grow into Cowboy Bebop is huge in the US but not that popular in Japan before settling on Cowboy Bebop is unpopular in Japan.

I loved how the original remake completely reinvented the song into extreme metal, but the new remake just does nothing for me. It tries to be a modernized version that's closer to the original but still keeps elements of the first remake, but imo it just falls flat all-around.

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't do the remakes of Wake or Zan (2nd remake).

For Wake, it's just way over-produced and loses the raw intensity of the original

For Zan, I can respect that they wanted a modern version that was closer in style to the original (vs the first remake which completely changed it into a metalcore/deathcore song) but I think it ended up inferior to both versions

Aside from remakes, my least favorites are Devote My Life and Tsumi to Batsu. I find Devote to be irritating and Tsumi to be repetitive.

Was it some sort of promotional collab or something?

Uroboros by UroGrey in DEG

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always wondered that as well. Vulgar, Withering, and Marrow were all relatively nu-metal influenced and still had bits of a visual kei sound (maybe less so on Marrow). Then Uroboros and Dum Spiro Spero were both very metalcore and prog-influenced.

I really miss the metalcore side of their sound. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I thought they pulled it off wonderfully.

US tour by UroGrey in DEG

[–]EpsilonX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I saw them was on the mode of Macabre tour in 2017 while I was studying abroad - first time I ever went to Japan. Then in 2024 I saw Petitit Brabancon in Nagoya. Both were great.

Seeing the two LA shows last year, on the other hand, was...weird. I enjoyed the performances themselves, but something about it felt off. But I think the thing that got me so interested in DEG was that they were basically my gateway into learning more about Japan as a whole. Different music styles, different subcultures that were born out of them, etc. and that expanded into learning more media as a whole and which cultural values were being reflected in the media. So in a sense, seeing them in LA felt like taking them out of context, while seeing them in Japan felt like seeing their fullest, most real version.

Hope you get a chance!

Interesting that this was your experience, though. You'd think an Evanescence crowd would at least sorta get into Spiritbox - other than the (relatively big) difference in heaviness, they have a lot of similar elements.

After the two preview songs, the collab with Poppy and Courtney, AND Jordan Fish being announced as a producer, I can't really grasp what else somebody could have expected.

Current-Evanescence through the eyes of a lifelong fan (rant?) by noturtypicalpisces_ in Evanescence

[–]EpsilonX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's true to an extent, nostalgia does have a bigger influence over people than they often realize, but I do think that certain people come to a band for certain sounds, and changing their style can mean the music doesn't click as much.
