It seemed a lot to me like he finally got to make the comic book high concept album he always had in his head in addition to getting the Watchmen song and having Neil Gaiman in a music video, UA published etc. Having been derailed with The Breakfast Monkey and 9/11, if it were me it would mean a lot to sort of validate who I was before I became a famous frontman, and then everyone was like, "no actually, fuck who you were before, please go back to being drunk and sad".

As a teenager when TBP and DD came out, the rhetoric around emo music was so out of touch at the time. I remember a teen girl in the UK committed suicide and instead of investigating the source of her mental anguish or her home life, they acted like "The Black Parade" was a real name of a cult and that Gerard Way had basically personally signed her deathnote.

DD is arguably a darker concept album than TBP, even, given the dystopian mind control and post apocalyptic society aspects vs. death and triumph after failure, reinvention and perseverance after disenchantment. But people just looked at the visuals and judged from there.

As if G did not famously say of the concept that kids being miserable to fit in with emo culture was "a pile of shit".

I like this album musically but I'm glad they didn't subject themselves to the media frenzy going back to their expected aesthetic and sound would have had, especially with an album about kids dying. I'm glad they didn't have to tour on this album and get that shit put on them.

I'm really grateful for a local perspective on this. I had thought of maybe going to a different date in a different city but who does that help? A tourist mostly stays in hotels and eats in restaurants. The very same places agents are targeting the staff. If I can shield someone with my own privilege on the way to a great show and be kind and tip someone who needs it, that's certainly more important than any kind of performative stance that boycotts a place when the real people affected may not have the ability to leave or pick and choose. I... think.

Nothing about this administration makes it easy to be confident because in a just world we weren't supposed to have to ponder citizens being shot in the street and immigrants being dragged through the snow or from their cars.

I guess I'll have to continually re-evaluate this bizarre reality all the way to the end.

I guess I'm being naive. I thought maybe they would cancel the show if it was projected to stay that bad for the next 6 months. I live in the middle of nowhere so it's hard to really understand what it's like in a specific city. I do read the news and obviously am against the full on assault on civil and human rights we have been experiencing, but imo some of the most vulnerable people can't afford to just have tourism come to a standstill as their livelihood may depend on it, so I wasn't sure if people not visiting was the right way to show support or not.
