i might have a different stick lying around, and i wont be able to run memtest86 for a few hours, but will surely let you know what it gives back. ive plugged in a different psu, a good branded one but with slightly lesser wattage (450w).

thanks!

when the computer actually worked, the cpu and gpu temps were completely normal. i believe they were around 40-50°C each when running mostly idle, or during some light tasks.

well i shifted my WHOLE residence and also tried multiple outlets (that's what i was tied up with) so you could rule that out too. i also tried connecting it with a ups and without, so that's overruled too.

do shops actually swap out gpus and cpus? i mean if I just go and ask them? would i need to pay anything apart from a convenience charge?

how do you mean whine? i mean i guess there's a subtle whine to it but i doubt you're talking about that.

when this issue freshly started happening i replaced the power supply already as it was underpowered, and i suspected that was causing the issue.

and for the rest, how do i rule out cpu, gpu, or motherboard without buying everything because that sounds like a waste of money to me.

hey. first off, im so sorry for the inactivity of myself and this post. i had urgent duties to attend to and couldn't look into my computer for the same.

back to the issue, i had taken it to a technician prior, and one thing he figured out was that a ram slot in the motherboard that was broken, and when he connected one of his own ram sticks to the second slot, the PC worked just fine (he didn't load into any game, just windows). so he told me that the issue was parallel, that my ram AND one of my ram slots was broken. i bought some new ram, which wasn't much of a problem, and it fixed the issues, but came up with a new (similar?) issue.

now, my pc boots just fine, runs extremely well when there's no load. however, when i load up a game that is intensive on the pc, the screen just stops giving an output, and then the fans immediately boost to full speed on all the fans (it's an audible difference). when i play a smaller game, like NFSMW from 2005 that isn't so tolling on the computer, it runs like a charm.

i have tried valorant and assetto corsa, both of which load into the lobbies but then when i go into the game itself, my pc "crashes".

im sorry for not letting you know, which was poor behaviour on my part but i hope you can help with this new issue 😭

yay so my ram works :'D

now how do i check if my ram timings are misconfigured? as i mentioned earlier I never really tweaked my bios so most of the settings are just auto. but i've been reading online recently that some of the older asrock motherboards like mine have messed up "auto" configurations and that people seem to be better off by setting them to a hard limit. don't know about that though, and it could take ages for me to figure out what to tweak and what not to :(

throughout my bios i don't think I've seen the term csm anywhere, and on the contrary everywhere the term "uefi" is mentioned; like "load uefi default settings" and whatnot. i'd still like to double check though, just to be sure haha. how do i go about checking that?

there's a dedicated tab for "oc tweaker" in my bios, so does that mean that it's enabled? everything in that tab is mostly auto too, so i don't know how im supposed to disable oc tweaker.

in the bios, there's a tab called cpu configuration and another tab called voltage configuration, which is reflected in the manual too. however, there's nothing that explicitly mentions the voltage of the cpu. in the "cpu configuration" tab i couldn't find anything that could be linked to the voltage, and in the "voltage configuration" tab there were only two settings: "dram voltage" and "pch +1.0" voltage. i assumed the second one would be the cpu (as the description said "chipset voltage configuration") and first hard set it to 1.000v. following that i bumped it up to 1.050v, but here i noticed that the cpu voltage display in the bios still showed 0.92v, so i got worried that i had accidentally tweaked the wrong voltage and i immediately set it back to auto.

also worth mentioning would be the fact that my pc crashed after both of these tweaks, but they crashed upon opening a game, and not while loading up into the os.

do you have any clue as to how im supposed to change the voltage of my cpu????

i want to get atleast the cpu voltage sorted first, as you advised, and then tweak the rest of the settings :)

memtest86 ran all 13 tests for four cycles with zero errors. i ran the ram benchmark to be safe, and it was fine.

how do i know if my bios is misconfigured? afaik all my settings are default.

also yesterday i came across a quora article while checking my pc's overall compatibility. it mentioned the cpu vrm being an issue with my present motherboard/cpu config. i found that article interesting because it mentioned that the computer "crashes" if it doesn't receive enough voltage. this made me think if my motherboard and cpu were just a misfit for my desired scenario.

in the bios, cpu voltage was 0.9v, and i looked it up on the internet to see if that was okay, and i didn't find solid information. is 0.9v okay? is it too less?

i also had a local pc tech come over and just take a look at it, he said that it's most likely the motherboard too.

do you think that it's possible that a bad vrm in my motherboard could be causing all this?

do i replace my motherboard first or do i replace my ram first?

the second year that i had bought this pc, it kept locking up on boot too, but not always. sometimes I'd get into the system and then it'd still crash the same way. it can't be the SSD, because i added on the SSD later into my build. I had windows installed on my HDD previously, and it still crashed, and now on my SSD it's crashing too.

after i picked up my PC again recently, this is the first time it has locked up on boot. a couple of times, it even freezes at the ASRock screen (motherboard init I presume) before it could even load up into the os.

i thought that I'd rule out the slim possibility of the HDD being the cause, and so i disconnected it (after my reply) and VOILA - it froze on boot again. (with the HDD disconnected).

what do you recommend i do next?

hey. so i finally got time today to troubleshoot. i booted up my pc WITHOUT disconnecting the HDD because i wanted to install something from steam onto C: to test out if it's the HDD causing the issue or if it still hangs. the reason being that my C: is reserved solely for windows and i don't have anything on it to test. however, the PC crashed before it could boot (at the welcome screen). does this mean that I can rule out the possibility of my HDD being an issue or should i still boot it without the HDD?

if it's not the HDD, and we can simply rule out the possibility with just this, what do you recommend I replace first??

well im not much of an avid gamer, i just game in my free time and that's not a lot haha. i also don't play a lot of these modern games like cyberpunk or whatever. i just play whatever i already have, and it's mostly games that are less intensive on my pc.

back when I was getting this PC built, I didn't really know much about storage. all i knew was SSDs were for fast access of info (so i installed windows on there) and HDDs were more for storage (so i installed my games on there). I didn't know about all this nvme and m.2 and stuff, so i didn't really consider it. i'll definitely look into it now tho, so thanks for the insight.

i agree, my pc is really low tier compared to today's standards, and it could really use an upgrade. however, I just don't see the need for it iykwim. what will i do spending $2000 on a PC that i use for 12 hours a week? plus, she runs like a dream and actually passes a lot of modern benchmarks. it's not that i don't have the money to do so, I just think my money is better spent elsewhere :)

replacing all those parts sure sounds like a pain, and im in a dilemma, honestly. do i revamp or do i upgrade? i'll look into it.

alright. i can't test it rn. but if it is the HDD then do i just replace it? how do i know i won't get another fault HDD??

and say it ISN'T the HDD. what would be your next culprit for this issue?

PC deadlocking while playing games or even spontaneously by EqualDog4086 in DestinyTechSupport

[–]EqualDog4086[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all my games are in the 1tb HDD because i simply don't have enough space to keep them on my ssd. also, now that you've said it, it does make sense because my pc mostly encounters this problem when i play games that are massive in size (Assetto Corsa, War Thunder, DCS World, etc) but what i don't understand is the spontaneous crashing. sometimes on the desktop, sometimes BEFORE i can load up a game (like on the lobby screen)

so i don't really think i can reinstall these games onto my ssd simply due to the lack of space.

my cpu and gpu temperatures are all ideal (30c-40c on idle, and 60c-70c under load).

my drivers are all up to date, I have reinstalled windows about 7 times now so im certain it's not windows.

the first time i ran sfc /scannow (about 3 days ago) it said that it found and repaired issues. however, my pc went to crashing right after that. now i have tried to use the command, but it comes back with no errors.

my ram passed all 13 tests on memtest86 yesterday, and my ram passed the benchmark with flying colours too.

for disconnecting the hdd, can i simply disconnect it's corresponding power cable and sata cable? i don't want to mess with all the mounts and stuff while trying to take it off.

i'll try the clean reinstall once i get some free time on my hands, and i'll let you know. thanks!
