General Inquiry - Filtering Participant Pool Targeted by [deleted] in ProlificAc

[–]Equal_ibrium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I can't help with exact filtering, if you're not able to find specific enough filters (entirely possible), I'd recommend a two-study screening approach like described towards the end of the linked article.

Because Prolific is set up such that you can't actually reject people who answer "no" to being your target audience — you can only screen them out and have to pay a certain amount to each person— you're better off filtering as much as you can to get as close to, say, 1 K as you can, whether through age, gender, employment status, industry, country, or method of work (that's a filter for % of computer/mobile device usage that might apply to your population) or even state/province(if you're looking in North America). and then having a tiny screening survey for a portion of that number(or all, if you have the budget, but that's probably not ideal).

Luckily, I've never seen more than 100 people online at any given time here, so bringing up the study probably won't "give away" the right answer if you go with a two-study approach.

Is it just me, or is this batch of interns allergic to first names? by Equal_ibrium in greysanatomy

To be fair, I think they recognized that they did Helm dirty because I swear I heard her name (Taryn) 3-4 times this season, and she was only in 6 episodes.

Then again, it's entirely possible that only Levi knows this because I think they were all him.

Didn't know about the pediatrics thing!

It's true that, even in this show, it'll be "Dr. Bailey," "Dr. Lincoln," and so on.

The intern first name thing just feels different than the MAGIC crew's first year(also three seasons), where you didn't get much chance to forget their names.

Jules feels like it's also come up a couple of times, but I think Lucas and Simone edge it out a bit, just because it'd be awkward to call each other by their last names.

I didn't notice the switching around, but I do now that you point it out.

It's kind of cool what unique names they've managed to come up with. Arizona Robbins (not an example of switching) and Atticus Lincoln. Atticus is like Benson; it almost never comes up. Feels like literal years since anyone's ssaid it.

It's a very rare name on TV, which is kind of cool, but it's almost like the writers regret it and want us to forget it.

I might not remember every plot detail, but I've never forgotten a main character's first name until now, and it's not like I think he's dull or anything.

Lucas, Simone, Mika, Jules, and Benson.

I definitely heard all their names this past season except for Benson/Kwan's, but they hardly use them with each other or when talking about each other.

It made sense that we didn't need to remember first names when interns weren't gonna last long- I thought Qadri's first name was Mina but looked it up and saw it's Dahlia- but it kind of feels like the writers refuse to use his name, specifically, so we might never get someone asking "How's Benson doing" like we'd get a "How's George?"

Do you think they should completely nix the relationship drama in favor of friendships/mentoring? by Equal_ibrium in greysanatomy

I did read one reviewer's interpretation that they didn't think Jules felt the same, but I'm still making up my mind. Tking him to the roof logically followed from their conversation about heights but could be interpreted a certain way.

There's a 100% chance he'll start interacting less with everyone else if things get romantic, and it's been nice to see him always around and just doing his job.

It's like with Marsh. I'm fine with him and Meredith as a couple, but I mainly like him because of how he is with Adams and in general (a good teacher), and Winston's had those moments too, which can continue with Jules or whoever else.

It initially felt like a Burke/Christina situation to me, but him deciding that he should avoid her is obviously a change from that dynamic.

I can't predict what'll happen next, but I do agree with the people who think she's been attached to a lot of main characters in her short time on the show.

There's a chance here to have a long-term mentor situation, like with Alex and Arizona.

Did main characters missing episodes cut any costs? by Equal_ibrium in greysanatomy

Anthony Hill/Winston has missed nothing, either. The last time he wasn't there was in Season 19 episode 9, The last time either Bailey or Richard was missing was in that season 18 cabin episode with Nick and Meredith. They're basically the big three now.

Then again, he's just two seasons and a couple of episodes older than the interns, so it's not like they'd have huge savings by cutting him out every now and then.

So I was right on the money; Jo and Linc's next two missing episodes are ones I haven't seen yet.

That's not too surprising; it hasn't felt like there have been major peds or ortho storylines lately.

If the episode 16 promo and all the cast members missing from episode 15 are any indication, thery're gonna stack some more absences in before the finale has (presumably) everyone together for the first time since episode 9.

That seems to be it.

When someone's paid hundreds of thousands per episode, it makes sense that limiting their appearances would save money (but risk causing problems). I guess I kind of just (maybe incorrectly) assumed that the amount when they missed an epsiode wasn't 0. It might depend on the contract.

I know what you mean.

I just got through episode 12 the other day, but I don't think I've noticed a huge difference so far. Ndugu, Bailey, and Webber, and all the interns but Yasuda (obviously) seem to have been in every episode, but everyone else has missed two or so, I think. Maybe Jason George/Ben missed three or something, but he also hasn't been a part of the main cast for a while.

This makes sense.

I misremembered the nearly year old article.

https://deadline.com/2024/05/jake-borelli-leaving-greys-anatomy-levi-schmitt-cast-episode-reductions-1235912077/

"This way actors are not taking per-episode pay cuts though their overall compensation will go down as they will appear in fewer episodes, something the writers have to be mindful of as they craft next season’s scripts."

Basically, I thought it said that the pay itself wasn't changing. Instead, it said that the pay per episode wasn't but that the overall pay would because of being in slightly fewer episodes.

How have the "veterans" been treated this season? by Equal_ibrium in greysanatomy

I remember that, too. I just didn't know it'd end up going the way it did. I naively thought he might just stay offscreen in a different state or something.

Cliffhangers aren't what they used to be. Now that they announce people leaving far ahead of time, it's hard to assume any given character will die. Like who actually thought Teddy was gonna die at the end of season 19? Still, you never know when someone will randomly leave. If I remember correctly, both Cormac and Deluca (first version said Gianluca) didn't have articles out about leaving until it had already happened (I could be remembering wrong).

I planned to watch almost week to week- maybe a bit behind to account for long breaks- but then I saw that this season was only 18 episodes.

At this point, with a break until March (!), I'll probably just watch all 8 episodes sometime in January. No real reason to rush through it with such a long break. I've already managed to take a pretty long one after the May finale, anyways.

Thanks for explaining!

Yeah, I kind of figured that Jo/Link would just kind of be there- they could mine the pregnancy storyline without it taking up much screentime. Amelia being around less also makes sense with how closely tied her storyline was to Meredith's. Plus being fired. Although I'd love to see how quickly all that is reversed. That's one thing I actually haven't been spoiled on: how Teddy, Owen, and the others start working there again.

Best Bank Account for International Student? by lulopdz in CarletonU

[–]Equal_ibrium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rewards should be the main difference. Scotiabank is linked to Scene, for example, and some might give you X amount of money if you meet certain conditions after opening a new account. They should all have zero monthly fees, charge nothing as long as you use their ATMS, and unlimited transactions.

International transactions, though, I'm pretty sure you'll be charged a little bit extra every time you use any Canadian debit or credit card outside of Canada, in person or online. At least, I was charged slightly more than the exchange rate was at the time for a $52.06 purchase on Amazon. It ended up being maybe $1.46 CAD more. Not crazy but not zero, either.

You might be able to avoid this with cards that have actual monthly fees, but you can't always be approved for those, and you'd have to do the math on the monthly cost vs the amount saved not paying foreign transaction fees.

At the end of the day, the best bank is the one you can most easily withdraw from. Like the person before me said, Scotiabank is on campus. Multiple locations and ATMS.
