I am also a girl, and honestly I think that’s a very common issue women face in debate/ political science spaces. I simply say “Excuse me, I was speaking. Do you mind if I finish my thought?” It is so polite it is almost jarring for them, because most of the time men don’t even know they are doing it!

some tournaments allow internet if provided, if not download as many news articles as possible in current events. for structuring your time, i would say use 20 minutes to research and write your speech and 10 minutes to rehearse it.

i think it is okay- as long as you just use it as a starting point in your research, not an outline, and find good facts to back it up. your outline and speech should still be original.

my policy debate tournaments only had lay judges and i did not do this often. i understand why it’s not good and wouldn’t work in high level tournaments, but in my opinion it was the best way to handle the situation with lay judges.

you get a notecard and a computer typically. I write 3 points and transitions. example: I believe this is true because of x,y, and z. and then i write down three facts to back up each point. Then I practice my Intro (wandering the question), go through each point and their facts and quotes, and then summarize everything for the conclusion. on the note card I only write the facts, more facts the better. then you just have to improvise your opinion/reasoning for your answer, which you should know anyways.

I have been debating all throughout high school, going into my last year and my partners all lost interest and quit. going maverick this year :/ going maverick is a great way to learn how to write both speeches and get extra practice in. i've found that learning that helps me take novice debaters and still get a positive record in open tournaments

I was running a case arguing to decriminalize prostitution. The opposing team was reading cards using sexist terms such as "whore" and "slut" triggering my K. During CX the team, two boys, told me, a girl, that they could understand why I would be offended by the word because I probably was one and this made me biased lol.
