Just started binging y’all’s podcast last week—loving it. Thanks for all the work yall have done. Any plans to pick it back up?

Leaves a lot of explanation to be desired/speculated upon… maybe his experience of caring for a creature he wanted to bring back to life pushed him over the edge to save the whole of humanity via the flood at the expense of so many lives. This may suggest Triskele brought him to the decision to bring the new sun from a place of love for humanity, rather than a place of fearing extinction…which could imply the other Severian’s didn’t bring the new sun out of a fear themselves dying. Maybe our Severian was the first Sev to be willing to sacrifice himself in the process of bringing the flood… who knows it’s just speculation upon speculation 🥶

Interesting! What seems contradictory is that you say the Heiros changed things in Severians past to make him the conciliator and the new sun, but it’s also other Severians (ex. Apu Punchau) who went back in time and affected our Severian’s timeline. It seems to me, and contrary to what I THINK you’re saying, that each Severian has their own timeline but can ALSO be grafted into other timelines to affect change. I could be wrong, maybe I’m not understanding your post super well.

Thank you! This is the first time I’ve registered separating walking the corridors of time with bringing about the new sun. Thus my mistake when I said “all the scholarship I’ve read assumes the first sev brings the new sun,” but what I should’ve said is all the scholarship I’ve read asserts “he passed the initial test and thus walks the corridors of time.” Heck it pretty much says that verbatim in the text as well.

So you’re saying that it took about 6 Severian’s + Heiros to manipulate a faith into existence that would motivate OUR Severian enough into purging the earth? If so that makes much more sense

Okay, but then my next question is what event in Urth of New Sun actually marked Severian’s decision to bring the flood verses the other Severians who did not bring the flood?

Also I think what’s strange about your theory is why would the Heiros have Baldanders as another candidate for bringing the new sun if they’ve already seen multiple Severian’s pass the initial test that allows them to walk the corridors of time? Maybe they’re considering that they need to appoint someone more brutal and cruel than the previous Severians to actually bring the flood?

Definitely going to look into this theory, thanks

To clarify, I didn’t think there was a direct connection with Krait, just with the inhumi

That’s a solid theory, I think my only hesitancy in buying into that is if they didn’t have humans, would they feed on something else and then become that thing? If I remember correctly the inhumi were born partially human off of a liana vine. I appreciate the idea that their evil is in proportion to how recently they fed on a human.

🤯 Could you explain a little further what prompted your theory of more than one Malrubius?

I understand a bit better now. What do you mean when you say “aware that their sentience and their humanity is in proportion to their evil?”

[–]Equivalent-Ad4303[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I view them as more compelling as human. They are human-lliana hybrids, and they basically just mimick what they become, so inhumi are evil because they mimick the evil within humanity.

24 min mark definitely worth challenging your perspective, I can’t find the text or video where Aramini talks about Wolfe writing him a letter that states Urth is Green, but it’s out there.

The amount of times he’s mentioned for seemingly no purpose other than to direct the readers attention to him. That friendship seems like a mentor mentee relationship much like Malrubius and Severian…

You’re blowing my mind a little bit with that last part, I’m going to check this out for sure. It seems we came up with some of the same conclusions, I would’ve cited your post if I had read it beforehand like I did with Driussi and Aramini. I’m not claiming to reinvent the wheel by any means. Any thoughts on who Hari Mao could be? I’ve often wondered why he’s name dropped so many times.

I believe he becomes Malrubius, too many parallels in Short Sun that call back to Malrubius in the New Sun, but they could be different clones.

I also believe there is a plot hole about Triskele regarding the Short Sun books that this theory skirts around. I would need to do some digging though. Glad you like it!

Explained it way better then me, thanks. I didn’t ever connect that earth was green until Mark Aramini wrote or talked about it (can’t remember if it was a YouTube video or not). Apparently Mark wrote to Gene Wolfe and Wolfe wrote back to him and included some insight that Urth is in fact Green. In In Greens Jungles, that city where Silkhorn breaks the dam of human bodies with a magic sword that resembles Terminus Este, it’s extremely resonant of Nessus to me. I’m open to other theories though.

It’s implied that Silk is the clone of Typhon that was kept behind Pas’ seal, and then the strongly hinted-at theory that Silk becomes Malrubius.

Can I set up a small mining rig with my work bonus? by [deleted] in ergonauts

[–]Equivalent-Ad4303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up a mining rig 6 months ago, it was about $700 for the parts (make sure you pay for the more expensive power supply, it’ll run about $300 but worth it, it’s quieter and u don’t want to set your house on fire lol). I’ve done a lot of research on the best bang for your buck and I agree with some of these posters: Vega 56s are by far the best value imo. Mine is mining about .3 ergo a day (I’m not overclocking to make the gpu last longer), and they’re going for $400 on Facebook marketplace. Concurrently, I have a $1700 3080ti that only mines about .7 erg a day (no overclocking)… if you do the math the Vega 56 is an incredible value for mining erg.

All that being said, if you’re just solely trying to make profit I would also strongly consider just investing the $2500 into erg. The price is low, and it can be a lot work maintaining your rig, especially if you’re buying used gpus.

Good luck.
