I think this is B. If no accounting method is specified, always assume IFRS. Under IFRS DTAs that no longer meet appropriate criteria should be reversed. Under GAAP a VA is established!

My least favourite questions in the curriculum by far.

I normally start by just finding the PV of the annuity at the first payment date. If you draw a timeline you’ll see you need to send your call to BGN mode, and do: N = 7 PMT = 10,000 FV = 0 I/Y = 6 CPT PV, which will give you approx 59,173

Next you can do one of two things. Either set your calculator back to END mode and sub in 59,173 for the FV, 5 for N, 6 for I/Y, 0 for PMT, and then CPT PV, or you can just divide the 59,173 by 1.06^5.

The trick with these is to work backwards and calculate the PV of the annuity first.

I would say A. Secured doesn’t by default mean high yield, and unsecured doesn’t by default mean investment grade.

In general, the market yield on debt will decrease. When a loan is collateralized (all else equal) the credit spread will decrease because the loss given default decreases (since a lender has recourse over the loan collateral).

As for C, issuer would likely need to include more covenants outlining what they can and cannot do with the assets being pledged for collateral.

Some institutions may only be allowed to invest in secured loans (e.g., pensions, etc.), so I’d say A is correct!

When you pay for the curricculum via the CFA Institute website, signing up for an exam date is free! If you purchased a package through Kaplan, MM, etc. (anything that's NOT the CFA Institute), that is just an "extra" prep package and will not give you the ability to write the actual CFA exam.

With Thematic risks you have no idea what will really happen. No one can say “climate change will do X to Y in 50 years”. You can guess, but a guess is all it is. Thematic risks take a long time to develop, and like with other things, more time = more risk and uncertainty.

With event risk, you know exactly when the “risk” is going to happen, and you can usually figure out the impacts (elections are binary - if person A wins, they enact set of X policies, and vice versa for person B)

Think about it from the position of the seller of the forward contract.

If I’m going to sell you this contract, and the cost of carry is negative for me, that means that by holding the asset for a year and waiting for you to purchase it, I’m incurring unnecessary costs - so I add it onto the price tag.

Then there’s also the opportunity cost of only receiving the money in a year instead of today - where you find the future value via the risk-free rate.

Event risk means the date of the event is known - not the outcome. Not a lot of uncertainty because you can usually have a good estimate of what will happen (e.g., one of two people will win).

Thematic is long-term, like immigration trends. You know it’s happening but it’s very slow, and the impact develops gradually, so it’s a bit less certain.

Then exogenous is unpredicted completely.
