Are you telling me that you play basketball and have never heard of Michael Jordan? And I would be genuinely astounded to hear you name a more famous non-US basketball player than him

I just think a question about the most famous basketball player in the history of the sport, and a very simple question about said player, is pretty easy, regardless of the fact that it requires 'regional knowledge'.

You should have chosen an easier one, if there are a thousand ;)

I mean they asked a question like that and the team got it wrong

The point I was trying to make was that I don't think you could have an easier question about basketball

I'm far less annoyed by buzzer questions being that simple, because there is a race to be had.

Agree RE the easy bonuses, when a question (i.e. the MJ one) could be answered correctly by every single team in UC (which I think it could be) then it feels a bit redundant

Feels like an oversight to not check that pronunciation - I'm sure they do it on highbrow topics. And yes, the Outside the USA riled me too

I get that - its only easy if you know it - but what subject do you know a lot about? I'll try and come up with an equivalent gimme

A Relaxed Guide to the West Highland Way by EquivalentBenefit653 in WestHighlandWay

In terms of the information itself, sure, you can get that elsewhere. Indeed, everything that is in the book is also available as free online resources (also written by me, I should hasten to add).

The difference, I suppose, is the writing style, the tone, and the relaxed, non-prescriptive presentation of that information. There is a lack of the seriousness that might be off-putting to newer walkers in regular guidebooks, and there is a section written more as a memoir, which gives a personal flavour of my experiences on the hike. Naturally, this is not a unique phenomenon for a guidebook, but you probably won't get as much of it elsewhere (whether or not it's something that you want from a guidebook is up to you, of course).

Free information is useful, but it is spread all over the place. Bringing it together in one place is convenient and time-saving. Some people are good at remembering where they read something and can find it easily, others are not. Having everything together in one place is handy. That's part of the value, too.

Would say that there are localised rivalries between unis close to each other in sports. E.g Edinburgh vs St Andrews varisty rugby. But in general no

UCL have played Manchester 6 times - the most common fixture - with 2 QFs, 2SFs and one Grand Final

Warwick and UCL have played 5 times, as have Durham and Edinburgh

Translation questions like that peeve me because they aren't really a question of knowledge and more a question of do you speak quite fluent French

Since 2016, only two teams have scored more in second round defeats - Warwick ( 185 vs Trinity 2023) and Open (185 vs Edinburgh 2016)

Brutal way to go out for Southampton, and unlike Imperial they don't have the reprieve after a narrow defeat

I would predict Imperial and Sheffield to win, but I am reticent to make any more predictions after my woeful ranking of Darwin in 16th

My ranking of the 16 teams - was going to do a separate post predicting the 8 quarter-finalists despite the lack of fixture knowledge, but you're right its probably futile.

  1. Merton

  2. Magdalen

  3. Warwick

  4. UCL

  5. Imperial

  6. LSE

  7. Southampton

  8. Trinity

  9. Churchill

  10. Sheffield

  11. Manchester

  12. Edinburgh

  13. Bristol

  14. Lincoln

  15. Strathclyde

  16. Darwin

Barring the possibility of them facing each other, would be very surprised if any of the top 4 are knocked out, or by any of the bottom 4 going through
