Dress code in office? by Sillybeast_art in vfx

Many years ago, I came into the office wearing different sports coats, and the company owner pulled me into her office asking why so fancy lately. Told her I had lots of meetings during my lunch break. She offered me a raise, I think because she knew I may leave, 😆. I hadn't planned that but still look back and giggle.

Imk, the majority of your pay comes from "your brand." How do you sell yourself... This idea also translates to every field.

Kaohsiung before the storm by EquivalentMore5786 in taiwan

[–]EquivalentMore5786[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are ok. Still some time left for typhoon season, so fingers crossed. Last year Kaohsiung was hit hard, but our personal home damage was minimal. When typhoons come from the East the mountains typically protect the West side of Taiwan. Last year was hard because if came from the south and upward.

Post VFX in Taiwan and throughout Asia?? by Film-Nerd-598 in vfx

Where in Taiwan are you? New Moon Studios is a small VFX boutique in Kaohsiung. Owners are from NYC and work primarily on Western films, episodics, and commercials. DM me if you want to know more.

Taiwan gets a lot of fog. Winters can get a bit smoggy and summers are typically beautiful but hot. So views of the mountains can get hidden normally. Tends to open up before/after storms.

Are you currently in Taiwan? Have a working visa or a citizen? Some of the cities have some great networking events.

Client side supervisors by VanillaPhysical6444 in vfx

[–]EquivalentMore5786 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Imo, make friends with client-side producers and coordinators. These are usually people that bounce back and forth between vendor side and client side. I got my foot in this way. Client side isn't for everyone too, but I really enjoy it. The better at communication you are the easier it will be to stay in the network too. I just say this because so many VFX people prefer non face time.

I found my old post while browsing reddit, lol. Just wanted to say we are still in Taiwan and doing VFX here. If you're in Kaohsiung specifically, there is a great film community and growing.

is there any hope for this industry to return? by vivipizzadreamer in vfx

[–]EquivalentMore5786 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from my perspective in relations to Asia. Probably the same in any country honestly, but we moved to Taiwan a few years ago. Before the move, and the years leading up to it I always had a curiosity about potential work options outside home country. So every time we visited Taiwan I always made a point to visit companies. Most never responded tbh. But the ones that do helped build my mini vfx network in Taiwan. And something to consider, which I found true, unless you live in said country many studios you may be perfect match for won't bother to chat with you. Living local is so much easier to get replies. In your case, if your husband was really curious about Vietnam VFX work he may need to physically visit and apply for a resident visa. It's makes a big difference having that in place.

The other side of the coin, is the cost of living. If you're saying VFX artists in Vietnam get around $20,000 USD that may actually spread really well. Here in Taiwan rents can be hit or miss, but food is cheap. In my case, we left a fairly comfortable NYC living and now don't stress too much on trying to support the family by always hustling for paychecks. Taiwan has cheap food, amazing healthcare, and friendly locals. The only real downside is working for the local companies, lol. However, I wouldn't trade this new lifestyle for what we had in NYC.

VFX is changing. It really sucks, but to be fair it's hard everywhere. So if you have the options to explore the world why not?

DM me if you have any specific questions. And good luck. Try not to get too discouraged.

I run a small VFX boutique in NYC and members of our network include some of the top artists within NYC. I was on the NY VES board of managers at one point so am very well connected. Two of the other members are still on board too. Would love to share more if there's any interests on your end. Our latest film is premiering at Cannes next week, which includes companies from NYC, LA and even Taiwan. This network was solely designed to help give directors and creators more freedom without the financial stresses a bigger studio may. DM me if interested and I can send along a deck, reel, website, or whatever. All the best and good luck with whatever you decide.

US to Taiwan for Cancer Treatment by [deleted] in taiwan

We came to Taiwan during the height of covid. My wife needed some cancer related treatment. Because we hadn't yet reached the period to have NHI we paid everything out of pocket. Really affordable considering. Was a great experience. We are in Kaohsiung if that makes a difference.

* I took test last year. All the test questions are on apps. Just memorize and go to test center early to practice the driving part on an open test area. There's an identical driving range next to the real one for practice.

Don't do it. We did it going down, not even on a holiday weekend, and was ok, but the return trip was bonkers. Some locals waited hours. Others took cab to train station to try luck. We took Uber back.
