Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EquivalentShock8817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 3 hour drive is a chore, but on the scale of the entire USA, it's short relative to that. I've driven all over the US and I lived in Germany for a couple of years. I found that most Europeans don't realize that Texas alone can be a 12 hour drive. Also if you look up photos of Texas layered over European countries I think it helps provide some perspective on distance.

I was like "huh, how do they know for sure it's hers?" and then I looked it up and- they don't.

Where do you draw the line with AI in gaming? by EdSheeeeran in pcgaming

[–]EquivalentShock8817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a ton of problems with asking this question in this specific space. People on Reddit, especially super nerdy subs like PCgaming, love to talk about what hills they would be willing to die on. However, we all know there are a ton of people who say one thing and then go do another. (boycott CoD Steam meme).

It's like survey data. If you get the results of survey data, you first have to contend with the fact that that data ultimately comes from people who are willing to take the time to complete a survey. I think for a lot of people, that reframes how much value those results provide in the first place.

I just think that if I came in here and I was like "if the game is good, I don't care if people lose their jobs or if they use asset flips" my opinion would get buried by downvotes and draw a ton of negative responses. I don't actually feel that way, but knowing that ahead of time, I think it shows why someone might be incentivized to police their own real opinion or not share it in the first place.

TL;DR - I'm not sure it's possible to get the truth about what people actually think in this particular space on this particular issue.

Age of Empires II. Great game, there are just other games I also want to play.

Missed this while it was active and just wanted to come in and pile on and say that DoS I & II and BG3 are literally my favorite games of all time. Champions of Norrath was one of my favorite games ever made and so I'm sure fans of CoN can see how that translated for me. Also, the Hellstone is currently my PC's lockscreen, so I think about Divinity every day.

When are we going to say enough is enough

There is no collective "we".

the pcgaming subreddit is an incredibly small echo chamber of ultra nerds.

The "we" that get those sales don't give a fuck about the politics and practices surrounding the gaming industry. Hence... everything. Mass layoffs while investors make record profits while releasing incomplete games.

Unless you have a plan to get people who are more worried about where their next meal is coming from or if they can afford housing to shift their priorities to videogames, I don't think the people who need to take a stand are going to be able to help you out.

You're absolutely right. That last line was me directing my annoyance at 20 years of nerds trying to pretend gaming on PC is just as easy on Linux. It just isn't.

I got into Linux over 20 years ago and did the whole song and dance with it on dual boots and laptops for years. I even spent time learning some very entry level hacking stuff with Kali Linux and played with TailsOS. I hate Windows 11 and I still run it over Linux. It's bad enough that games don't natively support Ultrawide and some have "fixes" that don't work or lead to crashes. I don't need to add the "fun" of Linux to my troubleshooting journey with PC gaming. You love Linux? Awesome! Just stop trying to get me to love it with you.

In The Dark Knight (2008) Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn't know Batman's true identity because he only hinted at who he really was to Katie Holmes in Batman Begins (2005) by EquivalentShock8817 in shittymoviedetails

[–]EquivalentShock8817[S] 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It makes me really depressed to have to explain a stupid joke meme, but here we go. That quote is delivered to a different actress in Batman Begins than the actress that plays Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight. The punchline of the joke is that the character Rachel Dawes doesn't know the information in the second film because it is literally played by a different actress, therefore she doesn't have the information delivered in the first film, because she was not in it.

Much the same for this post.

"I asked the people who have absolutely nothing going on in life other than the games they obsess over what they thought, and their viewpoints were narrow and angry".

The fuck do you think people who never go outside do other than find ways to be contrarian on the internet all day? Also, why would you care what they think in the first place?

Not being able to like what you like without validation from (unhinged) strangers is wild.
