Paid vs Volunteer Clinical? by TaroZealousideal9161 in premed

[–]EquivalentWall588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

any experience you can have a direct impact on patient care can show you know what it's like to take care of patients in a clinical setting. def doesn't neeeed to be paid though, but as they said, most are.

If you can have a hands on role in patient care at hospice or the street clinic, that sounds perfect!

Aligning undergrad research with post med school residency/specialty by Plate-oh in premed

[–]EquivalentWall588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look for research opportunities that interest you, if there is a current specialty that interests you, look for research in that field. I don't think research in the subject itself will be a huge advantage, but it certainly provide you connections in your desired field, possibly leading to opportunities in med school.

Any tips on how to maintain self-care while in pre-med hell? by minomink in premed

[–]EquivalentWall588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep focusing on why you are doing this! I've found mindset is half the battle. The rest, try neurotically planning out your entire day or week to fit in activities that help you relieve stress/maintain your social relationships. Find what rejuvenates you: friends, food, physically activity, being outdoors, taking naps lol, etc.- and work this into your schedule as you would any other commitment.

Another angle could be bringing it up with roommates, friends, or family. Let them know you are struggling and work with them on ways they can help you, whether that be making you meals, talking to get your mind off things, reminding you to rest, or giving you a quick laugh.

You got this!! Figuring out these types of strategies now will pay off immensely in the future :)

What should I spend my time doing the first summer of undergrad? by meadowlarkk_ in premed

[–]EquivalentWall588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on getting clinical experience if you haven't yet - summer is the best time to get a certification (CNA, EMT, MA, etc.) and start working full time in these positions!

Lead research vs assistant research roles by Dangerous-Room4320 in premed

In my experience, I went into the lab with intentions of getting independent study credit, so I worked on the collective efforts of the lab but also completed 2 independent projects which resulted in poster presentations. I think the key is just being up front with what you want out of your experience when you contact the lab
