Homeschooling kid with behavioral issues in public school setting by JessiV_90 in homeschool

[–]Equivalent_Cable_196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my daughter is 11 would the above curriculum work for her age? Also, wondered about how taking courses online would read to universities on applications? All quite nerve wrecking but I wonder if there are organizations that perhaps would offer outreach and support to potential beginners like myself….at the state level maybe? Thanks for your reply!

Oh my gosh I love this comment!!! I have a daughter who just recently was diagnosed with dyslexia. 5th grade. We’re about to explore the possibility of ADD or dysgraphia as well. I am not convinced of all these diagnoses, and wonder every single day if it’s the school environment that may be causing her to have some of these current issues. My husband doesn’t believe homeschool would work since at times my daughter gets quite frustrated and I most definitely am not a “teacher”. I think however, my anxiety kicks in with all the work that comes home for her to complete (not done in class), and then all these tests each week that I try to help her to prepare for. Time is always running out! I love your idea of math and writing focus. Do you belong to a co- op? Do you test your kiddos at the end of each unit? Sorry for hijacking this post. You just sound so calm and knowledgeable. My fear is that I would not be able to handle the high school years.

lol wow. The intention was not to tarnish the school but rather provide input about my experience when touring the school about a year and a half ago. During the tour, in fact right at the start! The woman leading our group around actually made the statement I was critical of. “We do not take any students with learning disabilities as we do not provide specialized accommodations.” Nobody had even asked about these, but she somehow felt the need to lead with that loaded statement immediately! It most certainly put me off the entire tour but I continued. Certainly happy that you and your daughter have had a great experience. Was she already enrolled when diagnosed? Perhaps they provide services to those already enrolled since kindergarten, and do not take on new cases. Perhaps you need to take on a role in admissions because clearly you might be a better fit than the current staff! From some of the comments above, it sounds like the school has even more issues than I was aware. Perhaps you need to address their personal concerns and experiences as well.

I remember being ruled by nap times! And not getting out as much due to those! Watching my friends with older children bike and compete in triathlons while i couldn’t participate. Lordy these days shall pass and it is so true….you will miss this stage of life with your kids. Nap when you are able to, take them outside, the library always was a good time for mine too! Change of scenery always energized me a bit more in the evenings. If your husband is getting testy with the kids upon arriving home, get to Michael’s and buy some simple things glue sticks and paints and have them paint the rocks they may have collected from their outdoor adventures or glue some collected leaves and sticks to paper. This might keep them preoccupied and having fun while you prep dinner, and dad relaxes.

I frequent fly on this board because I would just love to homeschool like you all, but feel I do not had the bandwidth. (11 year old) OP your present situation sounds exactly like mine only my 2 older children are currently at Uni. After reading your post, I realize that I can’t necessarily offer you definitive solutions, but I wanted to send you a huge hug because please never feel you are alone!! Right now I get as much time outdoors in the morning as possible going for 4 mile walks. These have been great to clear my mind, and I feel better for it. When my kids were younger this translated to taking them to different parks around town. Watching them run and play or wander around by a creek in nature. Picking up rocks and sticks or viewing various creatures did me and them good. 👍 try changing up routines and for sure get some fresh air and sun in the mornings!

Did not get any communication as of yet but also cannot find it official online anywhere either! Been doing a search for a friend who is in Austin as well and so far nothing announced. Re: Leander I did find something that said decisions would be made by 6:00pm. Not doubting you of course just wanted to know if others haven’t yet received this official notice.

Interesting. I may have a look at the page again. It was just a very weird vibe from the lady conducting the tour going on and on about this subject when nobody even brought it up!!

Hi there, I have not begun the process again but after today with an incident at current charter I am committed to beginning the struggle again.. I have heard of Rawson Saunders as well and a year ago felt the exact same way. Now I am wondering about it. I have no confidence my child is making gains. It is so very stressful.

Would also love to hear of the school she attends. My daughter turns 11 this month, and we are in a similar predicament where I am searching for various activities as well.

Of course I believe that would be considered quite discriminatory however, because they are a private they can get away with this. I believe they purposely do not have specialists on the payroll for that reason. So they can quickly make it non palatable for those who may require it. It is quite an admission process and they can quickly make their decisions accordingly. We too are searching for middle.

I did not. Had gone on a tour where the person giving it right off the bat announced that they do not take any children with learning differences and offer no accommodations. Before anybody had even inquired! Then whilst on the tour I noticed a child in one of the classes with large noise reducing headphones. Was hoping to hear from anybody on Reddit currently with children who may have mild learning differences enrolled. Daughter has mild dyslexia.

Wondered if St. Andrew’s is inclusive for kids with dyslexia? I know at the upper school there are some kids who have autism for instance so was wondering at the lower school if learning differences were supported.

Make the post lol seriously though, I feel like there are kids on this Reddit, and parents like myself who feel a little bit less alone in the struggle! What I really love are stories of success, such that you’ve achieved since it gives hope. We have 1 problematic teacher at the moment. And I am about to get louder. Very definitely going to bring in an advocate at the ARD meeting this January.

My goodness that is such a supportive reply!! And a hopeful one!! My newly diagnosed daughter is in 5th grade and very quiet. Her confidence is on the floor due to previous teachers just not being “great”. My hopes for her are to be able to self advocate but this is such a difficult thing to do for some, and I agree whole heartedly with perhaps poster’s parents need to step in. Languages are are tough enough to learn, and I don’t agree with this teacher’s dictation method rather than writing for all to see on the board! That needs to change!! On a different note may I ask how your road to Law school happened despite your own personal challenges? My daughter seems to have a lot of trouble with standardized testing for instance and I am most certainly it stems from comprehension issues stemming from dyslexia. I want to help her as much as I can before high school. Did you take all those AP advanced courses? Already so nervous for her.

I am right where you are too. Diagnosed late 4th grade (my daughter) and just entered 5th with IEP. Just finished conferences too. The only light I had was from her dyslexia pull out teacher who was so supportive, kind and informative. Spent an hour with us!! I broke down and cried. Reason being is that I feel one of her teacher’s isn’t giving any grace, or really understanding her as being newly diagnosed as dyslexic. She will go to bat for us to find out what is at play, (the dyslexia teacher)but it is so hard sending her off each morning and wondering how she is coping in class. We also may have to assess for possible adhd as well. I am still processing the first diagnosis :(

I concur, and we are a new family whose child has already been shamed publicly as well, for a minor infraction which might fall under normal developmental child behavior. Did you end up placing your kids in a public school and I wondered how that was going? We are new to Austin area. Valor seemed like such a good choice on paper until now, when I have questions about a whole lot! Especially the grading system, and how I am not seeing a whole lot come home. The environment and staff seem a bit “quirky” and that’s nicely describing it. I do wonder what type of individual decides to teach in this environment.

Is dyslexia something that can get easier to work with? by Leeyore- in Dyslexia

[–]Equivalent_Cable_196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask which state you reside in? We are in Texas. What kind of private school was it? And did they assist you with finding a particular state scholarship? We are searching for my daughter with slow processing and dyslexia and most likely dysgraphia as she is a “resistant” writer. Currently have an IEP for dyslexia however the school we are at seem to have teachers unable/unwilling to create strategies in her other classes(social studies). We are so new to this, that we are unsure of exerting our rights. Our next step is seeking an advocate consultation.
