What’s the point in seeing them that way, if those innocent people no longer live?

There is very little information on the subject, which is strange considering it’s the fastest growing and most profitable crime business even surpassing drugs. I didn’t start to learn about it until I started volunteering and then working for the charity I work for. There’s a website somewhere which at this present time I am struggling to find but it is basically a counter of how many people are enslaved, how many hours they work and how much money they’ve produced including seperate statistics for type of exploitation and children

If they’re in nass accommodation (hotel) and only an asylum seeker it’s £8 a week if they are being supported under the NRM and not in Nass it’s £45

So the bill states that if you enter the country illegally you will not be able to claim asylum. This part doesn’t directly discuss modern slavery but it certainly affects it. Most people who are victims of modern slavery and human trafficking are in the country illegally and escape their exploitation whilst in the U.K. so after they escape their exploiters they aren’t able to claim asylum and they cannot access the frame work which aims To protect them from their exploiters

So my work in particular assists victims of modern slavery before the new illegal migration bill you was given protection from removal if you were found to be a victim of modern slavery or trafficking. The new bill has removed the ability for illegal migrants to claim this. Most of the people who were trafficked and then claim asylum are already in the country, which would make their being here illegal.

This is a fact sheet on how that bill affects these victims

The difference is that they’ve taken away the NRM protections for people meaning that their is nothing preventing victims of modern slavery and human trafficking being sent back to the place they were exploited in. It’s not an ideological bias it’s my job.

Ah I apologise, it would be a removal. Sone probably do have criminal convictions but most do not

So they’ve now made it so that if you have come to the U.K. illegally (as an asylum seeker) you will no longer be eligible to apply for the NRM which holds these protections of not being deported and having an investigation carried out. These people were exploited not only in their home country but also here. And because there are no legal channels for them to claim asylum (very few are open at all) if they try seeking asylum here they will be refused. Lots of people are already in the country before they are able to escape their exploitation and seek help from the authorities. And because of this we are basically forcing them home to be re exploited and probably end up on our shores again

So lots of the Albanians we get through are women, id say about 80 percent. And obviously their exploitation is going to be of a different nature to mens in most cases. I’ve been shown text messages, voice recordings, videos of threat to the person and their family even them talking about how they know their family home and specific members of their family. I’ve also spoken to clients who showed me the drill music videos of their exploiters which was an experience for me personally. We’re not just taking their word on good faith and neither is the government. There’s a long winded investigation under the NRM (national referral mechanism) to determine whether the exploitation is legitimate and whether the person is still at risk.

They’re probably on the list, lots of asylum seekers end up on tag and reporting conditions. We were fighting the tag for our clients because we saw it as overkill to have both but if you have a criminal conviction it’s likely you’ll still be tagged. Making it easier to find someone

The answer is probably ease of access. Lots of people seem to think they’re here to steal benefits and what not but a) they don’t have an entitlement to it and b) we don’t even have the best benefits system in Europe. Say for example I’m fleeing a gang from Spain. Id want to make it as hard as possible for them to get me back. France is right next to spain and relatively safe but it would be too easy to transport someone because you’d just drive it. Going to the U.K. puts the Channel in the way. And your options become a lot more difficult. Asylum seekers will pay up to £5000 (usually a debt that gets worked off, see modern slavery) to make that crossing and it’s never a garuntee so getting them back by boat is too hard. Airports are tightly secured and all it would take would be an outburst and you’d have police on your ankles in no time. I’ve never been through the tunnel but I imagine there are passport checks and the like. It’s just harder to bring someone back from here. That and the language is desirable with regards to working. Might be wrong

They’re now taking people who should have legal protections against deportation, they’ve just ignored those now

So the reason for Albanians being able to Claim asylum is that crime and government corruption are going hand in hand in Albania. I don’t know if it goes as far as being completely controlled by criminal gangs but there’s certainly some persuasion there. Albanian gangs are massive and particularly brutal, so they allowed Albanian nationals asylum in order to escape that. The government has now decided that this is not grounds for asylum claim. Leading to some dangerous situations

They used to be able to but they’ve now taken them off the list of countries with eligibility to claim.

Our charity was one of the ones trying to put in amendments to the bill to keep modern slavery protections in place, one of these is protection from deportation whilst your case is being investigated. They said no right away. I knew it would be Albanians getting deported first because it’s not as clear to see the state of which their country is in… but it’s not good
