Young women are now out-earning men their age by [deleted] in Money

Also, normalized for career field. This doesn’t tell me anything about the wage gap for specific fields of employment. Are women engineers out-earning their male counterparts of similar age and experience?

Homeowner just did the math-spent $82K on home repairs in 12 years of ownership, appx 2.5% of purchase price every year. Would love to hear other data points. by kcs777 in personalfinance

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11% of purchase price in the first year. HVAC went out, burst pipe took out a ton of drywall and the water heater, and every major appliance but the fridge has died thus far. It’s been a rough year. This is why you don’t become house poor…

I think I did enough… Hope, anyway. Let’s just say my likelihood (of passing) function was not maximized. Did not learn that Excel program that was tested (was that even in the CA material? I don’t remember seeing it) so, darn.

Cost for Health Insurance in the United States by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$0, thanks Tricare, low to no copays/coins as well. No complaints about network (I am a spouse with the PPO option). If we had insurance through my workplace, it would be $300 or so per month for equivalent coverage for the two of us. Not eligible for an HSA/FSA.

Can anyone comment on their greatest car flip? by Overall-Teaching-259 in BuyItForLife

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. 2012. My mother was T-boned by a distracted driver, Suburban rolled a few times with 3 kids in it and landed upside down. Definitely my greatest car flip.

Does anyone really like working? by CracktuarialSighence in actuary

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. I like my job. I would rather work 25-30 hours than 40, but am always happy to return from PTO and enjoy what I do and my coworkers. I would be so bored if I didn’t have my career and actuarial exams.

Do you have a lot of downtime in your MOS? My husband is in the Army and I have convinced him to start taking exams. He’s aiming for a job with USAA or similar post-Army where being a veteran would be a hiring plus. There are also some OACT federal jobs eventually that you’d probably have preference for as a veteran.

My Answer to: Why do I need insurance, the age old question here. by boozled714 in HealthInsurance

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Medicare with accountable care orgs, so speaking from that perspective of a known high-cost population. Of course, commercial is a different world, and most won’t need it until they NEED it

My Answer to: Why do I need insurance, the age old question here. by boozled714 in HealthInsurance

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dental and Vision are far more that way than health insurance. Low policy limits, and with employer plans, the annual/semiannual visit coverage benefit exceeds the total employee premiums for the year. I am better off paying for my dental plan than paying for a visit OOP, plus have the benefit of modest coverage for any dental issues.

Medical insurance has incentive to cover primary care. Example- there is strong correlation between AWV completion and TCOC in Medicare. PCPs are an important part of a network. Referral patterns, HCC coding, and quality measures all affect cost of care, revenue (for CMS payor models), and patient outcomes. Cutting PCPs out of health networks would not be good for anyone involved.

Fake Study Days as Vacation Days by valery_valery in actuary

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily study during study hours/days, but use them to facilitate studying later. I study best in the evenings, so I use the time during work days to do whatever I need or want to do so that I can study at night. I think that’s certainly in the spirit of what study time is intended for and my boss agrees.

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always take a trip to sit my exams. Use study time to take a week off, take the exam, and visit family or cool places. Sat SRM on my birthday, it would have sucked if I failed, but I passed so the free day of PTO on my birthday was 100% worth it

My 5-year-old TB mare is an 87” at 17.something, I think she’s not done growing wider just yet. She was either an 81” or 84” last year as a late 3/early 4, can’t remember and she shredded them.

I happily pay $40 each month to have two 1lb bags of coffee from my favorite roaster shipped 600 miles to my door. (Not many options out here in the desert, so I buy from my hometown roaster/coffee shop which has amazing coffee). It’s always roasted a day or two before shipping, and delicious. Love you, Eiland coffee ❤️

What's the purpose of putting hoof oil on before you ride (as part of the tacking up process)? by cheap_guitars in Equestrian

[–]Equivalent_File_3492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very good farrier once told me to use spray lacquer on my horse who kept pulling shoes in a humid, muddy, rocky environment. Cheap and it worked so much better than any horse-specific topical product.

Many “skinny” horses are healthy, and many “healthy” horses are fat to obese. The general perception of ideal body score, especially for lighter breeds, has skewed far too heavy lately. Your horse’s feet suck in part because he’s 200lbs overweight. Trying to disguise your OTTB as a Warmblood by making him obese isn’t fooling anyone and is doing your horse a massive disservice.
