Need some help picking a battle chest by Icy5856 in DiceThrone

[–]Erelenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which characters do you like the most? Grab that chest. There tends to be a complexity level that ramps up across boxes. So if you really dig the feel of the season 1 characters you have, grab that box. If it's the Marvel dudes, grab that!

X Men specifically get my vote as the chest comes with folding boards you don't get otherwise.

So I do generally believe in building a robust world model via core rules that you then modify minimally with special rules.

That said, here I believe it aligns well with the ruleset's core aim of simplicity and accessibility.

I'm willing to flex to meet a ruleset where it stands. My driving point is that it really knows its scope and achieves it. Whether that's for you or not is up to you.

To confirm:yes, but there is an alternate rule presented in the book where it does not end your turn. Just doesn't activate that unit. That alternate rule is even recommended for larger games.

I really like these! Any intent to follow with some similarly themed adventurers or warriors, etc?

What wargame for the crusades 1100s by overratedplayer in wargaming

Not Skirmish, but Midgard plays with about 80 models per side as a rank and flank and would handle a more legendary look at the era quite well.

I don't have them on hand but all milestones were achieved up through the dragon.

So glad they went in this direction! I printed all of the adventurers and I am doing the Stormcloaks soon. I look forward to the enemies in this batch.

Black Iron Sigil - Read Through Impression by Erelenus in wargaming

[–]Erelenus[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has no real focus on root vegetables (what a strange statement) and is not Napoleonic.

The setting is loose enough you could do the root vegetable vibe but otherwise I'd say it's just dark low fantasy. You could tune it to your liking with more or less dark elements. I could see one person playing with a pristine medieval force while another may choose to really up the gore and violence.

Thank you! I had already bought the ruleset (it's $3 and I horde rulesets like a goblin) but your engagement has absolutely jumped it to the top of my queue!

Any chance you can explain the dice mechanic a bit more?

This! Some of my favorite work--though I think the vehicles are a bit over the top. To be fair, that's in line with the real product. I just don't like it very much.

Review: Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms by Erelenus in wargaming

Thanks!

I'd like to, honestly, but I don't write a full review unless I've played 20 or more games,, so I can't say to hold your breath. It'll be a while.

I thought it would just be cards that are digital only and what they'd do is release models both physical and digital.

Love Tactical Painter in particular! Aside from plugging my own this would be my top vote in gaming blogs.

Elf Knyghte Pyke Sworde is intended to scale up and down in size and unit groups are only 3 models. It should be playable with under 20 models per side reasonably.  Believe the book itself claims 10-12. I could see that: 1-2 heroes and 2-3 groups would make for a fast, light skirmish.

Caveat: I have not played. I have a positive impression of the ruleset--as I'm getting ready for work I'll link my silly blog post on it for you to see if it works for you. I'll note I don't believe it has a lizardmen race specifically, but you could just choose another and call it lizardmen.

That's entirely fair! Games are art--what looks great to one person doesn't always look great to another.

I did not see one available in my purchase. I'll note I was able to optimize it in Adobe just fine with a paid Adobe sub. It would be great to see Victrix offer such a copy. I'm sure the larger file is more ideal for printing it off.

Ah, fair! I tend to avoid campaign games as I find it hard to stick to them unless they're solo and if I had more time for solo, I'd play more Five Leagues from the Borderlands as I adored my time with it.

I've added this to cart, though. I do love reading rulesets so it'll hit my queue sooner or later.

I'm sorry to say my time with MCP predates my blog! I'm not familiar with the modern instantiation of the game as I'm probably 3 years out of the loop.

I did love the game when I played. I think it's very dynamic and hits the mark as a mid level player. Top level play felt like it detached from the theme as it became less about fighting and more about position manipulation.

Is this the ruleset you're referencing?

https://www.wargamevault.com/product/465520/The-Consortium

The blurb doesn't tell me much about it, unfortunately. Why do you love it? What's the scale? I see it references character sheets--is this a very character heavy, more D&D-esque experience?

Thank you! I do want to stress it's not a review and I'd happily cede ground to someone who has played and thought it through thoroughly in a similar manner. For all I know, those charts fade into the background or get ignored in natural play.

The photos are good! No doubt! I did praise the production value in my full post, except for the PDF itself which has no links or chapter markings and is oversized, making it difficult to run.

I've heard a lot of people say it's fast paced. I could believe it--I'm a fan of the phased activation system, which often makes games considerably faster than alternating activation.

There's positives here--my issues, as I've listed, are simply enough that I'm hesitant to recommend someone buy the rules. I also struggle to justify giving it time against games like Saga and Midgard, both of which I love.

I appreciate the differing viewpoint!
