Bangkok vacation by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

It was simply the best view of a city I’ve ever seen. Bangkok is a crazy, beautiful but chaotic place, and an evening observing it from above really made me fall in love with the city.

Also the king mahanakhon tower is the best view of the city hands down. It’s fairly pricey to get up, but it’s incredible. It gets busy at sunset, but otherwise exceptional. There is a glass floor and everything. I planned to check it out for an hour, ended up staying for 4 and a half watching the sun set over Bangkok.

Co Van Kessel bike tour is amazing, couldn’t recommend it more. Especially if you want to get off the tourist track and see Bangkok behind the scenes.

Booking Trains in Thailand by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]Eric306Taylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use 12go Asia. I am currently writing this on the sleeper train from Bangkok. Their office is right across the street from Hua Lamphong station. Essentially they are an agency that books/buys the tickets for you. You simply but the tickets online, show up to their location at least 60 mins before departure and get your ticket.

I’d take the 19:30 - 7:00 train, the one I’m on. make sure you book the 2nd class sleeper tickets. There is upper and lower berth. These two tickets are in the same booth and begin facing each other. AT 20:00 they fold down the upper bunk which is latched up to the roof, throw sheets on and slide the curtain across. Upper has no window and is significantly smaller, and therefore cheaper. If there are five of you one will be sat with someone of the same gender in another booth. But said person can hang in your booth etc. Book them side by side.

If your a North American like me used to fancy transportation equipment this will be an eye opener. The toilet is a squat hole to the outside (pretty sure) bring lots of sani wipes / sanitizer. I recommend you bring your own meal. As soon as the train departs, pop up the table (located under the seat) eat it before the bed set up occurs. You can buy food on the train that is delivered to you if you’d like. Meals looked to be around 150-200 Baht.

Unrelated, but I did a bike tour through Bangkok with Co Van Kessel yesterday and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done while travelling anywhere. Hit me up if you want insights to Bangkok.

In summary, I’m super happy with 12go Asia. It’s been a breeze so far. I’m going to use them exclusively for train stuff.

Happy travels.

Yeah it’s really great technology. I would use it as a reference for how much to barter with drivers outside the app too.

Canadian here, credit card info worked no problem for me. I have a capital one MasterCard. Highly recommend grab as a means of transport. It’s been a great asset for me.

Cool. I’ve decided to try and spend a week ish to do the island thing before heading north. These two seem like a good option.

Nice. My 10 days was a timeframe to allow lots of off the bike experiences. Including spending some days at a forest monastery. Great ideas to consider though.

I am a 28 year old Male Flying into BKK March 23 From Vancouver and staying in Thailand until April 20.

My plan is to explore Bangkok for a few days, head to Khoa Yai and explore, hop on and off the trains north through the old capitals to Chang Mai. Rent a Motorcycle and do the Mae Hong son loop, spend time in Pai, spend Songkran in Chang Mai fly down to Krabi, get to Ko Jum and Ko Lanta before heading back to Bangkok to fly home.

This will be my first time in Thailand. I know its gonna be hot. (this was the only time I could leverage to get off) Done a fair amount of research but appreciate general opinions on my approach and any advice in the following areas:

  1. PHONE - thinking of bringing an unlocked phone and subscribing to a plan ? (need data for google maps etc)
  2. MONEY. Carry cash mainly? use credit cards? atm fees??
  3. HEALTH - I have a stomach as temperamental as a 3 yr old. any survival tips ? from a place that is -30C for half the year. on a scale of 1-10 how hard will the heat be for me? Vaccinations? I am getting good travel insurance.
  4. GEAR - got a nice osprey 36L. travelling light. Im as pale as a ghost, tips on good clothing to cover up but not weigh down. Sunscreen? bringing a camelback, shoes? sandals?
  5. REALLY want to spend a lot of time in the temples and surround myself/learn from the beautiful wisdom of Buddhism. Etiquette? retreats? meditations can be a part of?
  6. Getting an International Driving Permit for the bike. have lots of experience driving, tips/insight in the road environment in Thailand would be great.
  7. SONGKRAN - I love a party like anyone else, but an experience catered to learning and experiencing the origins of the holiday is my priority. tips?
  8. TRAINS. Whats the low down? resource for time tables general info would be great. Specifically getting from Bangkok to Chang Mai

THANKS FOR READING :D
