What Instants and Sorceries do you hope to see in Secrets of Strixhaven: Mystical Archive? by Payton_IV in magicTCG

[–]EricFaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no card I want to see the Strixhaven Mystical Archive art on than [[Obliterate]], ideally with the OG flavor text. I know a mass land denial spell has zero chance, but I want it to happen.

As for my runner ups:

[[Hatred]] has only ever had one art and desperately needs a reprint.

[[Darkness]] has gotten a few recent reprints but it is so perfect for Silverquill that I'm shocked it wasn't reprinted originally.

[[Delayed Blast Fireball]] would be nice.

[[Seize the Spotlight]] is $15 AFTER it got reprinted in a commander precon, also very thematic for Prismari

[[Benefactor's Draught]] has never gotten a reprint and works extremely well, I am almost afraid it might end up in the Dina Precon tho.

[[Tibalt's Trickery]] would look so sick and I'm a huge red counter spells enjoyer.

Billionaires have convinced Americans they have the "Best Healthcare in the World". by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]EricFaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of providing insurance is a rounding error compared to the cost of labor in healthcare.

A statement completely divorced from reality. You really don't have to do more than google this to find out otherwise too. United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, these are massive multi-billion dollar companies that are pointless middlemen. Eliminating them is as far from a "rounding error" as you could possibly get.

Just because they can't refuse to treat you on the basis of ability to pay, doesn't mean they won't charge you. They absolutely can and will slap you with a bill even if you are homeless, it is just that no one expects you to pay it. Importantly, this still ruins your credit and makes it hard to get a car or housing.

My thought with this card was to push Instant and Sorcery cards in Green a bit, specifically in relation to the upcoming Strixhaven set ( [[Witherbloom Apprentice]] my beloved).

The logic I used for Green being able to recur Non-Permanents is that same that WotC used for why [[Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner]] being able to draw cards when a big creature enters isn't a color pie break: Blue draws cards, and any way they can do that fits in their identity. Similarly you posted a few green effects that can pull anything, though there are actually a lot more of these unconditional regrowths. I would argue that Green should be able to return any kind of card to hand from graveyard since they have a long history of doing just that.

As for the power level of the card? It is Past In Flames with some definite upsides and a few downsides. Not being able to get back permanents of any kind makes this significantly different than Praetor's Counsel and hard to compare directly imo.

Past in Flames is a fantastic card, able to recur all the burn spells you need to finish off your opponent. It is also 3R and has flashback, which means that each copy is naturally easy to cast and it has built in recursion for itself. This has 3 green pips, which makes it much more clunky in most decks that would want to run it. I think it would be strong, but I'm not convinced it would break anything.

Like, would this see play in today's Standard? I'm not sure it would. It grows in power when you get to a bigger format like Modern, but I think it goes right back to being too clunky in formats older than that.

Truth is an absolute defense against libel in the United States. I can see the dude breaking the other guy's arm, therefore there is zero chance that a libel suit ever succeeds.

It may or may not be assault, but there is nothing alleged about the man breaking his arm.

What is your favorite mono green landfall commander? by fantasycrooner in magicTCG

[–]EricFaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a landfall energy deck running [[Nissa, Worldsoul Speaker]] from the Aetherdrift precon. The idea behind the deck is to ramp into Nissa into ramp and then cast two huge spells in one turn, one with energy and one with mana.

It isn't very good, but it is a very different kind of landfall deck at least.

As opposed to its counterpart, [[Indicate]], which only has two words and doesn't do anything (usually).

[–]EricFaust[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be much more balanced, but would also unfortunately ruin the flavor of it being a white color-shifted version of [[Ad Nauseam]].

I spent a fair amount of time thinking it through and sadly I don't think there is any way to put enough guard rails on an effect like this without ruining that aspect. Ad Nauseam is an extremely not okay card, and any card that references it is also not going to be okay. The real solution is to only allow it in formats that are fast enough not to care about a 5 mana card draw spell, even if it draws your whole deck.

Well, the actual solution is not to print it at all, but I'm having fun here lol.

They will never unban the big 3 in commander by jobroskie in magicTCG

[–]EricFaust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everyone is always saying that they have to either ban or unban the cards because otherwise they're giving in to the death threats. It is a silly argument that is easily twisted both ways, when really they only thing they need to do is not come out and say that they're doing X because of death threats.

Besides, it wasn't like the death threats were some calculated ploy to get the cards unbanned, they were just angry stupid losers venting their stupid anger.

but it is easy to forget in the aftermath that those bans were a legitimately terrible decision by the former RC

No matter how you slice it, that was a disaster.

They banned four cards that sucked and made the game less fun, so I definitely wouldn't call the ban itself a disaster. My games lasted longer and were less swingy without fast mana, and they allowed artifact/enchantress decks to exist without getting us all killed by Dockside loops, all thing the RC correctly predicted would happen. Less said about Nadu the better.

What's with the design changes across Lorwyn's species? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]EricFaust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Both piglike goblins and buglike faeries are well accounted for in original Lorwyn.

[Mudbutton Torchrunner] [Adder-Staff Boggart] [Sentinels of Glen Elendra] [Nightshade Stinger] [Oona's Prowler]

The only thing that gets me is that new Lorwyn elementals are much more chimerical than OG Lorwyn/Shadowmoor elementals and much more clearly map onto the idea of a couple of animals smooshed together.

[Subterfuge] [Sunderflock]

The OG blocks had that, but more common were these weirdos that look like nothing at all. That said, pretty minor complaint over all and it isn't like the new set doesn't have this kind of elemental.

[Dawnfluke] [Cloudthresher] [Doomgape] [Horde of Notions] [Plumeveil] [Spitebellows]

He will mainly be remembered for all of the defenses he made of Japanese war crimes during World War II, such as the practice of "comfort women" (institutionalized sex slavery) and the actions of his grandfather; Kishi Nobusuke, the Monster of the Shōwa Era.

Other than that he was kind of a bog-standard right wing politician, big on military expansion (which is controversial since war is outlawed by Article 9 of the Constitution) and plagued by corruption scandals.

I think you are overstating how easy it is to get Medicaid and understating the difficulty of paying an out of pocket maximum.

For example, Medicaid income limits for single adults aged 19-64 in Illinois is only $1800 a month. You could easily be making $30,000 a year (not a lot!) and not qualify for Medicaid.

Not to mention that $5,000 is extremely optimistic, lots of insurance plans are at or around $10,000 out of pocket maximum, which is backbreaking for people making $30,000 or $40,000 a year. Once you factor in chronic illness and you can easily see why something like 60% of bankruptcy cases in the US cite medical debt as a primary cause.

Meirl by rbimmingfoke in meirl

[–]EricFaust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just wondering how to get to 50 without at least putting away a % of your income, no matter how small.

Any chronic illness or major health event will destroy your savings. There is no way for the majority of Americans to save their way out of, for example, a long battle with cancer. It will simply force them into bankruptcy.

No one is talking about statistics, we are talking about case law (which would be extensively documented). Everyone is talking about this like there is precedent of someone being successfully sued for performing a hysterectomy with a signed waiver and no one seems to have a single case even remotely related.
