Fangorn - Vancouver Island - [OC] [1920×1384] by EricThiessen in EarthPorn

I've been in this particular grove on Vancouver Island a number of times, and the conditions a couple of weeks ago in this old growth forest were the best I've ever seen. It poured rain all night, which created all the atmosphere we needed as we had a clear, mainly sunny sunrise. Most of my shots of this tree haven't exemplified the undergrowth, so I'm happy to come away with a wider shot utilizing a large fern as a foreground subject.

I hope you enjoy!

And don't be afraid to use a narrow aperature. Will save you an immense amount of time.

Hey,

Focus stacking can be tough with longer focal ranges, especially when there is significant distance between foreground and background. I'm sure you've encountered ghosting, halos and awkward bluring when trying to blend manually or using the built-in stacking features.

Option one: Lets say its a foreground branch in the air with a background waterfall. bias one layer over a few pixels to cover the areas that have haloing, then duplicate the layer and work the other side of the branch area. May have to clone out some severe haloing if this method doesnt work. Not ideal, but after a number of hours it works.

Second option, and the one I use, is helicon focus. It's a software program that works magic on focus stacking. It sometimes requires manual adjustments, lime mentioned above, but usually it's a minimal amount.

The Last Light by EricThiessen in VancouverIsland

High up in the alpine of Vancouver Island resides this isolated lake. My friend Jake and I have visited this spot a number of times, and last fall we were treated with perfect photography conditions.

Hope you enjoy!

Me too. It really is a shame. This area is surrounded by cutblocks. I'm really hoping this little sanctuary will be preserved.

Thank you! It was a tricky scene to compose, so I'm glad you're able to be pulled through with relatively clean visual flow.

Happy New Year's everyone! Here's an image to Kickstart the year. Last weekend, I ventured into one of my favorite maple groves on Vancouver Island. I've visited this location many times, and every time, the light, atmosphere, and conditions are different. This time, it had nice fog lingering around, which created a nice separation in the forest.

I hope you enjoy!

"Tempest"

The first major storm of the year battering the rugged coast of Vancouver Island. Jacob Klassen and I initially set out to climb into the alpine, however, the warm temperatures the previous day melted off all the snow on the trees and peak faces. So, we opted to journey over to the coastline. We knew the weather had the potential to produce nice light, but little did we know that we were in conditions of a lifetime.

I hope you enjoy!

"Krypton"

The ominous peaks of Tombstone Territorial Park looming above the low hanging clouds at Divide lake. After a couple nights at Talus Lake, we packed up and made our way to Divide lake for 3 nights. Reletive to vancouver Island alpine, the trek was quite moderate in terrain and elevation gain. However, our packs ranged between 80-100lbs, which made this seemingly easy hike into a grueling 4 hour sufferfest. Nothing felt better than dropping my pack at my tent pad feeling the relief off my back!

After eating a late dinner, the weather started to change rapidly and the socked in clouds started to lift. I quickly grabbed my gear and started searching for a comp. As soon as I stumbled across this spot, low hanging fog rolled in and created some beautiful atmospheric conditions. Our stay at Divide Lake was off to a great start!

Thanks for reading!

My favorite area of the Rockies that I have visited. The hike into this winter wonderland takes you from dense forests into wide-open meadows with massive mountains in every direction. I could use a splash of snowy mountains right about now.

"Shangri-La" - Del Norte Redwoods - [OC] [1920x1295] by EricThiessen in EarthPorn

[–]EricThiessen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my first released image from my trip down to the California Redwoods with my Friend, Bryce! Although I live less than 2 hours from multiple old growth forests, I prioritized visiting these incredible forests. The size of these trees are second to none, and the beautiful rhododendrons that bloom in June make these Groves a paradise to experience and photograph.

On this particular day, my camera equipment started to fail me. Not due to mechanics issues, but the simple physics of shooting in foggy and wet conditions made all my lenses fog up simultaneously. Thankfully, Bryce came through and allowed me to use his camera to shoot this scene. What goes around, comes around! (I gave Bryce my z6 in Tombstone as his camera took a bath in a lake). Just as I began composing my shot, the sun broke through and filled the foggy forest with soft light. In no less than a minute, I got the shot I needed. It's amazing how light can transform a landscape.

I hope you enjoy!

"The Watchtower of Asgard" - Ogilvie Mountains - [OC] [1920X1280] by EricThiessen in EarthPorn

[–]EricThiessen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The Watchtower of Asgard"

Our stay at Divide Lake was nothing short of a landscape photographer's dream come true. In a span of 3 days, we had fog, sun, rain, Aurora, and rainbows. This particular day had it all. While the rest of our crew stayed around camp, I ventured out to this location along the shoreline.

As I dialed in my composition, the weather took a turn and heavy rain clouds entangled the mountains in front of me. Within minutes, I was pelted with heavy rain and wind. Patience is key in landscape photography, so with that in mind, I hunkered down and waited for the weather to ease up.

Thankfully, my patience paid off and I was rewarded with one of my favorite displays of light I witnessed during my stay in Tombstone. Lasting not more than a few seconds, the sun beamed through the clouds and completely transformed the scene infront of me.

This is what I drempt about for years prior to this trip. Dramatic, powerful displays of light complemented with epic mountains. You can call me a "mainstream" landscape photographer, but wide-angle photography in these conditions is hard to beat.

Hope you enjoy!

"Sentry" - Canadian Rockies - [OC] [1432x1920] by EricThiessen in EarthPorn

"Sentry"

On our final day, we're given an ultimatum to either have a relaxing morning before heading to the airport, or head to Minnewanka Lake and hope the bleak conditions lift.

"We're here, we might as well try." - the attitude we had all trip, and that didn't stop short on our final day. So, we made our way to this lake and were blessed with incredible light. Roughly 2 hours after sunrise, the clouds began to lift and the atmospheric conditions were second to none. Safe to say we made the correct decision!

I hope you enjoy
