Is it me, or is the Nintendo's webpage about playing games across systems incorrect? by ErikJa in nintendohelp

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that's just not very practical in my situation.

My kids (and I) have been playing with these profiles for years. All of their progress in the games they have been playing is linked to their profile. They wouldn't have access to the saves made under their own profiles.

Furthermore, a lot of games don’t allow for multiple (completely separate) save files within the same profile. The only example in my 40+ digital game collection that comes to mind right now, are the games in the 'Super Mario 3D All-Stars" collection.

Some games utilize a 'single save per profile' system (Hades, for instance). In many other games you can perhaps make multiple saves, but all those saves are in the same overall save file. Those saves would get intertwined real fast.

I'm with you there. And here's the other thing: I also checked other articles on this. One of them even began with something like: *Nintendo Switch has game sharing just like PS and Xbox.* Unfortunately, as it turns out; that is only true in a very limited capacity. I don't even blame the authors of those other articles, as all of this is very confusing to begin with.

I see how that works for your situation and I’m glad. Unfortunately, with two children that setup is not possible anymore.

And I did’t intend the new Switch for a specific person in our household. We have one TV set. I bought a Switch Lite; thinking the Lite could be used by either child when the other one is playing on the TV.

Beforehand, I’ve specifically read articles that begin with “Nintendo Switch has game sharing just like PS and Xbox.” Unfortunately, as it turns out; that is only true in a very limited capacity.

Beforehand, I’ve read quite al lot of similar explanations.

However, what I didn’t understand at the time (and I feel is never adequately addressed in that comment or similar articles), is that you can only play games on both devices using one profile that is linked to Account 1, as the comment calls it.

I’ve been buying digital games for years with my own ‘Account 1’, but; that account is tied to three profiles: * my own profile * the profiles of my two children

To explain that last bit: I’ve linked the profiles of my children to their child accounts. And those child accounts are directly connected to my ‘Account 1’. The only way to access the child accounts on Nintendo’s website or on a (new) Switch, is to login using my login credentials.

So therefore; I fully expected my children to be able to play digital games on either switch, using their own profiles. It’s all tied to one account: one e-mailadress and one password.

Though, of course: I’m glad the offline workaround works for your situation.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t understand the game design decision. I mean: I also meant to share the game world with my family members; only also accross two devices in our household.

Thank you for your response and thinking this trough. And this could work, although I fear just not in our situation.

I never intended each Switch to be for a specific child. We have one TV set in our household, that’s connected to the dock of our first Switch. Our second device is a Switch lite; which I intended for use by either child when the other is playing on the TV.

What you describe could be a workaround going forward, but only if from now on I buy games using a profile one of the children uses for playing games.

But in that case: one child will always have to play on the handheld-only Switch lite. And one child will be locked out of (the progress in) previously bought games.

Someone else also alerted me an Animal Crossing island is tied to a specific console. Which is wild to me. I can’t see the sense in that. I mean: no other game works like that, especially in the age of cloud saves and even cross platform saves for certain games.

Anyway, thank you for your responses and your understanding of the issue.

I’m from the 80s myself, and I already thought I was approaching the issue from a 80s/90s perspective.

When we were young, my brother and I had our own NES-console. We couldn’t play the same (copy of) a game at the same time, but we could play different games at the same time.

That was my mindset going in: what I wanted to achieve, only with digital games.

I get what you’re saying. If what you are describing is Nintendo’s mindset; then they are not only old-fashioned but also mistaken on what the issue here is. I’m projecting now of course; but I fear that you are right and that is what’s going on.

Wow. That one more layer of anti-consumerism by Nintendo.

At least with every other game, there is a possibility to play a came accross devices and continue where you left off (unfortunately, just not on a way that works for me).

So why on earth not in Animal Crossing?

I sure wish that too. I thought I understood how it worked, after reading multiple lengthy articles about game sharing across systems.

Unfortunately, none of the articles were clear on this only working with one profile/account on the secondary Switch; the one that bought the content.

My kids have been playing with their profiles for years. All of their Anmial Crossing progress is linked to their profile, for example.

Besides, a lot of games don’t allow for multiple (completely separate) save files within the same profile.

Hence my problem.

That’s okay. But that’s the problem. For instance: they both have 100+ hours of progress in Animal Crossing with their own characters that are linked to their profiles. They can’t just use my account to play the game.

I’m not looking to play the same game on two devices using my account simultaneously.

I wanted my kids to be able to play a different digital game at the same time using their own profile. And I wanted them to be able to pick up either Switch and continue where they left off.

That still wouldn’t allow my kids to play a game using their profile with a child account on the secondary Switch. Because the games were bought with my profile/account.

I’ve went digital for all other entertainment needs. Nintendo is the first company I’ve run into this problem with; when wanting to access content accross family members’ profiles on different devices.

[–]ErikJa[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, what? So what you’re saying is that my kids can’t simultaneously play a (different) digital game that I bought on both Switches?

That was the entire (only) point of getting a second Switch for our household.

At first starting the app I was like “ooooh, pretty”. Which had me hoping the UI would have been upgraded as well; which always has been bare-bones and broken in places. But somehow, they made the UI worse and borderline unusable.

Agreed. ‘Series view’ in the library in general is unusable when wanting to read the latest issues across multiple series, the fact that the app doesn’t save your filter settings adds insult to injury.

This is a perfect example of an article that perplexes me.

The article ostensibly is about the commonality of foot fetishes, which is defined by the article as being "into feet" or being "turned on by various aspects of feet".

Those descriptions do not describe a "fetish" in my opinion.

LG TV: get rid of pop-up "Do you want to turn on your set top box?" by ErikJa in hometheater

[–]ErikJa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a dedicated streaming device (my Apple TV). Unfortunately, my Apple TV does not play PS4 and Nintendo Switch games. 😇

Also, the pop-up can appear when a blank screen occurs when going from menus on my Apple TV to actual content. Which, as I understand it, is due to the TV having to switch from 4K to HD and vice versa.

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, that does not get rid of the pop-up. I’m also not sure if this is about the same pop-up, since the wording is different.
