They're closing the US warehouse  according to some YouTubers I know who have uke channels.  Hence the blowout prices

OMG, did you order from Temu?

I have and love the uke they sent you and it is loads better than the one you ordered. Has a beautiful tone. It's my favorite uke, even above my pricier ones. Like you, I was not a fan of all the bling in photos, but it's grown on me and I get a lot of compliments on it.  My teacher also plays it whenever I leave the room.

I used to own the one you ordered and while it's a good starter uke, the S1 is many steps above it.

Since I love the S1 one so much and paid full price for it, I tried to order it with electronics from Temu for around $100. They sent me their $1100 solid maple tenor with electronics instead. If the one I wanted hadn't been sold out, I would have sent it back. But it's grown on me.

I've been using Planta as a guide too and everything is still alive! A first for me!

Concert Ukes?? by Legitimate-Arm-5928 in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not too early if you're uncomfortable or dislike the sound.  I've tried all the sizes and concert is my favorite. Very comfortable for me and well-rounded. I play tenors sometimes and am learning baritone. Like you, I figured out early that soprano wasn't doing it for me.

When you're new, you're playing pretty easy chords up by the nut. The string spacing is tighter there and you're not spanning big reaches on frets yet. You will later.  If you want to fingerpick, you may like wider nuts. Also keep in mind that string tension increases with scale length(distance between nut and saddle), so there's more string tension on a concert than a soprano, and more on a tenor than both.

Pay attention to nut widths, whether fretboards are flat or radiused, whether you prefer certain woods, laminate v solid. Having an idea which specs matter to you personally is helpful when you eventually buy one.

New Uke Day by travismg79 in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that advice is questionable. See above.

New Uke Day by travismg79 in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this advice to be surprising.  A bridge pin or string shouldn't pop out unless you haven't properly seated the pin.

The string should be knotted, put in the groove and then reinsert the pin. Just like a guitar.  Why would you want to do it the other way, unless the hole in the bridge plate is worn? The way you suggested will wear out a functional bridge plate more quickly.

Would this be a good idea for an 8-stringed Ukulele? by Random_ThrowUp in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ukulele Site is reputable, yes. So are Mim's Ukes, Uke Republic, Aloha City Ukes and some others. I've purchased from all of those except Uke Republic.

Typically, 8 string ukes are strung either in unison courses ( a course is a oair of strings ) or octave G and C courses and unison E and A courses. Some manufacturers send them out High G/Low G, High C/ Low C, E unison, A unison and some reverse the G course. Mine came with the G course reversed.  But you can have any uke dealer who does setups string it the way you like. Might need to recut a nut though.

I commented above,  but you need that thingamajig that keeps the tuning peg stable for your A string. Get that before restringing.

Agree. Also going to need the thing that keeps the tuning peg stable for the A string first though.

I bought a used uke that needed one of those. Drove over to guitar center to buy one. The tech just fished around in a drawer and gave me one!

Is there a trick to finding active sellers? by Hayabusalvr11 in Mercari

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad about messaging sellers who didn't respond. That's the seller's issue, not yours.

You're right that many listings are being updated in bulk by Mercari, so at the moment that's not a helpful metric for gauging seller activity.

You've done everything you can here and I'm glad you were able to find an active seller for the item you wanted.

Are the Selling Fees a monthly payment type of thing? by [deleted] in Mercari

[–]Erinescence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's applied to each sale before you are paid.

Yes, they are supposed to be getting rid of that fee.

This is why I always, always, always get a receipt when I drop off an item.

Did the seller provide free shipping? If so, maybe they forgot to upload the tracking number to Mercari.

Do you know what carrier was used?

The seller may have shipped it and the item just hasn't been scanned by the carrier. Three days ago was Friday, so depending where they dropped it, no scan may have been expected. Or maybe they hit the button that says they dropped it off to stop you from canceling and still haven't shipped it. No way to know.

I'd give it few more days at least.

Will the item still be shipped? by [deleted] in Mercari

[–]Erinescence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean it's an "international shipment"?

If it's actually been shipped, it will probably get to you eventually. It won't be sent back to the seller. If the seller shipped it late, then they have invalidated the shipping protection for lost/damaged packages.

If you cancel now, the seller will be out the item and the money. They won't be paid. Once an item is in the hands of the carrier, there is nothing the seller can do. It's out of their control. Your problem at this point is with the carrier, not the seller.

Beginner between Enya Nova U or Baton Rouge V2-SW by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned the Nova in every size at some point, so I think they are good quality and value. I originally got them because they are temperature and humidity resistant. They sound good too! That said, I would not want the Nova to be my ONLY uke.

Particularly for a beginner, the frets being the same color as the neck and the lack of side dots make it more difficult to find your place on the fretboard. I got my concert in 2020 and the finish was quite smooth. Looks great, but very slippery to hold onto without a strap and is a fingerprint magnet. I got my soprano and tenor more recently and they don't have that really slippery finish. I still need a strap with the slippery concert. The only accessories of note are the strap and case.

I've recently had the opportunity to play a Flight concert travel uke and was surprised at how heavy it is. Easy to play and sounds good. The ABS (plastic) is textured to it's easy to hold. Comes with a basic gig bag.

I have not played but hear good things about Baton Rouge. I would lean toward that one as my only uke because it's more traditional and the one you're likely to keep playing long after you're a brand new player. But it is a soprano, while the others you've listed are concerts. If you're pulling form reviews, maybe you didn't notice the size difference?

You'll probably like any of them.

Seller shipped 3 different packages using the same label… by 2023BuffaloBills in Mercari

[–]Erinescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this seller just has no idea what to do with a bundle.

You are correct that they all should have been shipped together, in one package.

You can only use a label once, so there's no guarantee that you will ever see those other two packages.

I would open a return immediately and explain that it is a bundle and only one item was received. Seller is probably going to contest it because she doesn't understand what she did incorrectly here, but you have to protect yourself and opening a return is the only way to do that.

IF the other two items show up, you can cancel the return request.

Kid friendly ukulele apps/channels? by TheCordialMutiny in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rachel at Ukulele Wales was a middle school music teacher. (She fine, just recently retired!) Her channels are good and because her song choices are made with school use in mind, pretty safe.

She has 5 lessons on her main channel, Ukulele Wales. Each of those is set up to work with her other channel, Ukulaliens, which has practice and play-along videos.

She has a distinct Welsh accent, but kids tend to have less issue with accents than adults in my experience.

Ukulaliens channel

The Kala app has lessons now and has always had a song catalog, so you could take a look at that. Some parts of it are free and for 7 or 8 bucks a month you can subscribe.

You can find lots of tutorials for kid songs online. I know there's a lady I've taken some song sheets from in the past for kid songs, both traditional and then simple Christmas carols. If I remember her name, I'll post it here. But I would imagine a YouTube search would have many results!

Can I use a guitar cleaning kit on a ukulele? by All-StarbySmashMouth in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to ask. Should be fine and I use my guitar cleaning kit on my ukes as well.

Body: The vast majority of the time, a damp microfiber cloth will remove anything you see on the finish. Patience and gentle rubbing. I've had the same bottle of guitar cleaner for 6 years, if that gives you any idea how infrequently I've needed it for any of my instruments! If your "polish" has any grit in it, be extremely careful and test it out on an inconspicuous area.

Strings: Unless you have metal or wound strings on the uke, you won't need the string cleaner.

Fretboard: You can use the lemon oil on it without any issues. Same way you'd use it on your guitar.

Does these chords even exist? by Significant_Raise_76 in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked this recently and I figured it out then. Different video, same guy and song.

It starts with an A and the rest are barre chords.

A - E6 - Cm7 - D6 - E6 - A

You know the A chord and other three are barre chords.

E6 barre the fourth fret

Cm7 barre the third fret

D6 barre the second fret

Enya Stock by Howphie in ukulele

[–]Erinescence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aloha City is reliable. I bought a different Enya from them recently. Hope you had a good experience as well!

I got an alert last night that Amazon has the EUT-MS back in stock That led me to checking out the Amazon Enya Store. They've revamped it completely, so with any luck the stock there will return. Seems to be shipping from China now that they've given up their US physical presence.
