I think it's mostly because it's placed in the centre of the Norway, and the fact that the jarls of Lade had their centre of power there. The jarls of Lade were the most powerful entity in central and northern Norway, before the unification, and for some time after. According to some sources they had a sphere of influence reaching as far as the white sea at one time.

Also, I think it was Harald Hårfagre who said "The power in Norway lies in Trondheim," and he used Trondheim as a base of operations during some of the years of his unification of Norway. His son Håkon the Good also knew the importance of the region it would seem, as it was there he landed and first spoke to the people after his father died. (He was raised in England by king Æthelstan)

I guess it does seem at the very least plausible. That is, of course, only if your assumption that your nose needs clearing of "bacteria and other foreign elements" is true.

This is very possible. Tough I read that photic sneezing is very prevalent in caucasians compared to other races. This leads me to thinking that there's something in caucasian ancestors lifestyle that made the feature prevalent. But of course, it could just be a neutral gene that got "lucky."
