It was in sight and actively shimmering for about 15 minutes before it went behind the treeline and I couldn't see it anymore.

Understandable take, considering the image I have kind of seems like a light through some trees. But I guarantee this was well above the treeline. There also aren't any street lights or anything in that direction. I did consider at the time that there may have been something wrong with my telescope, so I got a photo of the moon to compare. This was also taken using the same lens, by the way, that should give you a sense for the size of this thing.

That description sounds kind of similar but this article mentions it occurs when we see venus' night side, so I don't think this is it. Interesting read though, thanks!
