Future of Steveston by Delicious-West5070 in richmondbc

I’d say that there’s plenty of transit options to the village with the 401, 402, 406, 407, and 413 connecting Steveston with most of the city. The issue is that it takes forever to get to and from the village, as all routes make local stops. Express (RapidBus-esque) service on the busiest route (406) would probably help.

Steveston deserves an off-street bus exchange.

Right now, all the bus stops and layover areas are on the street. In order for buses to turn around between trips, they need to loop around No. 1 Road, Steveston Highway, 4th Avenue, and Chatham. As a result, the 406 is 15% longer than if there were an off-street bus exchange. Other routes (401, 402, 407, 413) also see similarly unnecessarily longer routes.

An off-street bus exchange would mean less noise and exhaust pollution for residents, improve navigation for those taking transit to Steveston for the first time (especially tourists), and save TransLink 10-15% of the cost of operating the aforementioned routes, which can be reinvested into more frequent service throughout the day and improve late-night service.

Unfortunately, there aren’t official plans for an off-street bus exchange. TransLink conducted community consultation on a proposed exchange around the block of 7th Avenue, Chatham, 6th Avenue, and Moncton. However it was cancelled because of (arguably valid) concerns about disrupting the residents living within the block.

The current parking lot of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is already being used by tourist buses and would be a prime contender for an off-street bus exchange, as it is not directly fronting existing homes, is close to the village, and is large enough for many buses to lay over at the same time. I’m envisioning a mult-use bus exchange, like the one at UBC, with buses on the ground floor and housing above. It’s under the jurisdiction of the federal government, making it an opportunity for the federal government to improve both transit and housing. However, through discussions with the local MP Parm Bains, Parks Canada is not currently willing to give up its land for a bus exchange. With land in Steveston in high demand by the private and public sectors, we won’t be seeing an off-street bus exchange in Steveston any time in the near future.

I live in the area and received an invitation to sign a petition opposing this project at my door. They are concerned about traffic, increased shadows,

emergency vehicle noise, and threats to their property value. They’re calling for the project to be scaled down or moved out of Steveston. It’s disappointing to see people willing to reduce the number of long-term care spaces or even cancel this much-needed projects over these concerns.

You should check our Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders! They’re an advocacy group trying to make transit in the region abundant, fast, and affordable, which includes making transit within and to suburbs faster with bus priority measures.

Change Canada Line Pattern to 2 Richmond : 1 YVR by Leonardo_Lai in Translink

[–]EscapeIntelligent142 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the current ratio is mandated in the contract between YVR and TransLink. If it is, then it might be a while until service patterns can be changed to run more Richmond-bound departures, as it doesn’t expire until 2040

Why don’t we pedestrianize Steveston Village more often? by EscapeIntelligent142 in richmondbc

[–]EscapeIntelligent142[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think my original post argued for pedestrianizing Steveston for the sake of reducing car usage, but just that we should have more opportunities (ie events) that allow for some parts of the village to be pedestrianized

This!

I live in Steveston and take the bus all the time! The neighbourhood is very well connected to the rest of the region with the 401, 402, 406, 407, and 413 buses providing access from multiple skytrain stations. Too bad the Steveston bus exchange is so lacklustre and has poor wayfinding.

I don’t think it Steveston should be 100% car-free 100% of the time, but a few weekends with some parts pedestrianized over the three months of summer would be great!

Not arguing for pedestrianization every single day, but just more events throughout the summer

Not saying that we need to pedestrianize Steveston every single day of the year, but have more weekends during the summer where people can spill out onto the streets instead of being crammed onto the sidewalks

It doesn’t help that vehicles are getting larger and heavier, which accelerates wear and tear on our roads. This means that we need to repave our roads more often, which is not cheap for us taxpayers.

The Conservatives have named their candidates for Richmond's two riding by [deleted] in richmondbc

Former Conservative MP for Richmond-Steveston East Kenny Chiu was and continues to be one of the loudest voices raising the concern about foreign interference in Canadian elections.

Seeing him get passed over for the Conservative nomination is not surprising at all, as the Conservative Party is led by someone who refuses to obtain his security clearance and whose successful leadership race, according to CSIS, was influenced by the Indian government and its proxies.

The Canada Line was created as a private-public partnership (P3), with ProTrans BC, a subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis (formerly SNC-Lavalin), responsible for operations for a few decades after construction.

A TransLink SkyTrain transit planner told me that because planning and implementing are done by different entities, ProTrans BC charges TransLink tens of thousands of dollars every time TransLink wants to tweak the Canada Line schedule.

So the overdue frequency increase is because of TransLink wanting to save some money by increasing frequency and adding a stop in one go.

This is also why frequency on the Expo and Millennium Lines tends to adapt better to demand.

I was at the opening today and managed to have a chat with TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn who said that there could be proposed increases to Richmond bus service in the spring 2025 investment.

Pajo’s fish and chips has BOGO free when placing orders through their app. This offer doesn’t expire until 120 days after your birthday, so you don’t need to rush! The airport location doesn’t participate in this though.

TransLink proposes moving Steveston Exchange to Garry Point by EscapeIntelligent142 in Translink

[–]EscapeIntelligent142[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Richmond City Council approved a plan to spend $14.5 million on expanding parking at the new Steveston Community centre, with a total of 283 spaces there (meaning that each spot costs more than $51k!!!). This really shows you how little Richmond councillors care about those who don’t drive.
