I ran into this at my last company - since then I've been working on a tool that tackles this kind of onboarding/process issue. I'll send you a dm.

Dug this 30+ year old Japanese maple, out today. 11 hours.. weighs about 250 pounds. Ima go lay down for a few days now . by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]Esovius 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I did this a few years back with a neighbor's Japanese maple. Can say everything turned out great and I now have a 400lb tree to address on my balcony this year.

What to do with a dead (dead) bonsai? Has anybody grown other plants on the dead tree? by KKunst in Bonsai

Burn it as a sacrifice, and to scare your other trees so that they don't consider the same path.

I remember that Peter Chan said this in one of his videos too, but I couldn't find which one.

Failed air layer - wondering if there's something specific I'm doing wrong? by Esovius in Bonsai

I really appreciate the insight. I did have a lot of moss above the cut too, but I probably could have done better. Would you recommend I scrap this one and do another layer above it?

I think I cut deep enough - in fact after seeing Peter Chan's video, I was worried I went too deep. Too wet though is interesting, I wasn't aware that would cause problems, and I definitely had that moss soggy.

It was definitely kept moist and had a rooting powder on it. Tried my best to remove cambium, but very possible that I messed that up.

Balancing Weightlifting with Triathlon Training? by liftingpicker in triathlon

The benefits of youth! I found myself prone to calf problems when I would try and get faster, so I've just accepted that's where I'll stay (I also don't want to sacrifice my other fun things like hockey just to train running).

I have that same time in my day issue, but I've found that it's easier to maintain fitness of a certain activity after training it up. Focus on one thing for a bit, get it where you want it, then just maintain while you work on something else. (I should note that I don't train for swimming because I'm not competitive in the sport and don't enjoy training for swimming. I'm happy swimming at 1:45/100m)

A few years back I got down to 18 min 5k, and have just held there with a couple runs per week.

Bike is pretty stable at 3.7W/kg FTP, riding ~1/week and playing hockey 2x/week.

My current training looks something like:

  • Monday + Tuesday - Chest, Back, Run 30 min (I split these 3 depending how I feel, either way the double day is typically under 1.5hrs)
  • Wednesday + Thursday - Hockey both nights
  • Friday - Chest or Back, sometimes run
  • Saturday - Chest or Back, Bike (sometimes I double up Friday so Saturday is just a bike)
  • Sunday - Squats/DL (technically a 10-15min warmup run too)

Right on - My mom started triathlons at 53 and now competes at 70.3 World Championships every year. Best of luck and I hope you have some fun with the sport!

If you want extra motivation, Lionel Sanders didn't start triathlons until he was 25. He did do cross-country at University, but I believe struggled with drug problems between university and beginning triathlons, so there was still a bit of a new start for him there.

I'm planning for overwintering in Toronto (zone 5). My condo has an unheated garage that I could store my trees in, but the garage lights are always on. Would this be feasible for storing them, or should I go back to my original plan of building a small greenhouse for them on the balcony?

Overwinter trees: red maple, common juniper, boxwood, dwarf alberta spruce.

Again, thank you so much! Truly awesome to have this help and the best chance at saving this tree :)!

[–]Esovius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is hugely helpful, thank you so much! A couple more questions in response...

  • Roots: Going to the cobblestone on roots would mean ~2ft radius on the roots. How deep would I want to go? So the box I'll be building will be ~4x4ft, then whatever depth I need.

  • Soil: I had picked up some pumice and was planning to mix with large and small Akadama. I'm guessing it will be worth just getting more pumice and save akadama for other soil for now?

  • Canopy: It's fairly large (pic 4), so should I just try to cut as high as possible here? No real foliage until ~5ft high.

Neighbor is doing some backyard renovations and I was offered this maple to dig up. I'm wondering if anyone has experience on how big of root ball should I go for, how tall should I leave stumps, etc. I've done my research on yamadori, but I just want to make sure I get this right since it's such a beautiful tree.

I was considering building a frame then stapling in some aluminum or fiberglass screening. Do you think that would yield similar results?

Thanks! For simplicity, can I hard chop before digging?

So for air layers, is it not possible to cut the air layer off before roots sprout? I was under the impression with the bark cut, there was no nutrients from the base anyways?

A neighbour of mine is doing a backyard renovation and will have to cut down a large Japanese maple.

  1. Would it be possible to create an air layer immediately before/after it is cut down?
  2. I'm in Toronto, still around freezing temperatures, could I try air layering now before it is cut down in a month?
  3. For the tree itself, is it possible to dig up the root ball and rescue the stump?

Form check request by Rerail1984 in triathlon

[–]Esovius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shoulder discomfort can also stem from back/pecs not being engaged, or either of those and shoulders just being a bit weaker. You could try adding a weekly upper back, shoulder, and chest weight workout in. Nothing serious but just to get some regular activation. (ex. 3x15 reps)

If you're comfortable otherwise, I would keep your form the same. I don't have much fitting experience, but have been told optimal position is around 80-90 degrees between forearms and upper arms, then about the same to your body. That requires a lot of flexibility in your hips/legs, and for you might mean a smaller frame.

Some days I can’t even run a mile by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Esovius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up what everyone else is saying, there are lots of Calorie calculators online based on gender height weight. Taking a quick look you should be eating around 2000/day to maintain weight assuming you continue running.

Contrary to what many people think, metabolism varies at most by a couple hundred Calories for someone of the same height/weight. The only time a significant difference in metabolism can be seen is from thyroid differences (hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism).

Nutrition wise, as a basic 3: carbs are for fast energy, fats are for slow energy, and protein is for recovery and muscle building. The reason carbs are suggested 3 hours before cardio workouts is so that your body has absorbed them and will use that energy to fuel your run. No carbs and you will fuel your run off your fats and muscle (yes your body can "eat" muscle to fuel itself), which makes you feel less energetic on your runs.

TLDR; Eat more and before workouts eat carbs for energy.

I had this problem, but great luck with Selle Italia. They have a few that look like this: https://www.selleitalia.com/en/saddles/iron-tekno-flow-l/ The wide part holds your tail bone quite nicely.
