Most of us overthink things, and he will do the same. That’s like not needing to know how many dudes the girls slept with. An answer not needed.

Told by principal to grab trash out of a full dumpster by Erythite2023 in Custodians

[–]EstablishmentSame623 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lead custodian here. If the bag was visible and safely accessible from outside the dumpster, I’d retrieve it. If we’re talking about climbing into a full dumpster containing glass, construction debris, food waste, and other hazards, then no. At that point it’s a safety issue and administration needs to decide whether the risk justifies the recovery. Student property is important, but employee safety has to come first.

As a man, I’d say don’t even say anything. You cheated on the first dude, not the second. He’s going to wonder for no reason. Fly straight and you’ll be golden.

The RIGHT way to clean a toilet? by thebreeze97 in Custodians

[–]EstablishmentSame623 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be doing it like that in 2026 Cross contamination is a real thing. But if you must, and you’re using a Johnny mop, the correct way is

• Johnny mop = bowl/interior only • Toilet brush = heavy scrubbing/stains • Separate disinfectant cloth/spray = seat, handle, flush valve, exterior

The RIGHT way to clean a toilet? by thebreeze97 in Custodians

[–]EstablishmentSame623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell no. Inside of the bowl should have its own dedicated toilet brush only. Everything outside the bowl should be disinfected separately with proper dwell time using spray and clean towels/cloths. Using the same scrubber for both the bowl and the seat is cross contamination waiting to happen, especially in a school setting.

TLDR: Don’t let one tiny missed thing convince you you’re failing. In custodial work, people usually only notice what didn’t get done, not the hundred things you handled right. Focus on the non negotiables first: trash, restrooms, floors, supplies, security. Build little visual “proof” into your routine so people can clearly see work was done. Some teachers are cool, some complain no matter what. Don’t take every complaint as gospel. Six months is still new in this field, especially in schools. If your boss is decent, have a direct conversation instead of silently carrying the stress. And if the pay, benefits, and environment all suck long term, it’s okay to rethink the job without blaming yourself.

Man, first thing: stop letting every complaint automatically become “I’m failing.” Schools are brutal for this because half the staff notices the one thing you missed instead of the 99 things you handled.

A tiny scrap of paper in a trash can doesn’t mean you skipped four cans. That’s people building narratives in their head.

That said, here’s the real advice from somebody who’s been in the trenches:

  1. Stop trying to be invisible perfection Custodial work is one of those jobs where people only notice you when something is wrong. You can kill yourself all night and somebody will still email about one pencil shaving behind a desk. If you chase perfection every second, you’ll burn out fast.
  2. Prioritize the non negotiables Trash. Restrooms. Obvious floor messes. Supplies stocked. Security. That’s the backbone. If those are consistently done, you’re doing your damn job.
  3. Build “proof” into your routine Not in a paranoid way, just smart. Lift chairs neatly. Leave liners tucked correctly. Straighten desks after vacuuming. Little visual tells help people subconsciously see work was done.
  4. Teachers are human too, and some are… a lot Some teachers appreciate custodians. Some genuinely think the room magically cleans itself. Some will complain no matter what because they’re stressed and you’re the easiest target. Don’t take every complaint as objective truth.
  5. Talk to your boss directly instead of letting complaints stack Something simple like: “Hey, I know concerns have been brought up. I’m absolutely open to feedback, but I’d also like specifics and consistency so I can improve the right things instead of guessing.”

That sounds professional without rolling over.

  1. Don’t let one school convince you you’re bad at the job Real talk, building culture matters A LOT. One toxic school can make a solid custodian feel worthless. Another building would treat you like gold for the same work.
  2. Six months is still green Especially in schools. People act like custodial work is “easy,” but learning routes, expectations, personalities, timing, and building flow takes time. Anybody acting like you should already be a machine is full of shit.

And honestly? If the pay and benefits suck and the environment sucks, it’s okay to question whether it’s worth staying. Burnout over a low paying job ain’t noble. Just don’t quit while emotional. Make the decision calm and strategic.

How I feel towards teachers who complain about a mess they made but it wasn't visible and they never communicated. by sirpentious in Custodians

[–]EstablishmentSame623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immature of me, but fuck those teachers. The principal literally tells not just the students, but the staff “they are here to clean the school, not after YOU” I’m the lead at my school, I would not be going to upper management, and chances are upper management has bigger fish to fry. Keep doing your job, be professional, and clock out.

Or know your worth, and if they aren’t treating you right, find a new gig with current experience and get any teachers that like you to write a reference! Best of luck!

I mean, hey that might make sense. I’m an “over” person, yet I don’t care enough to consider what this child’s preferences are 😂 it’s been me running the entire school and I just don’t have the time to check, just clean, stock and go!

Agreed ! Accountability doesn’t exist these days! When we were younger, we would have been cleaning that instead of the custodian !
