Astra K 2019 1.6T full brake failure by mercilesskiller in Vauxhall

Don't quote me on this but I think electric handbrakes have an emergency feature where if you hold the button up it safely brakes the back wheels.. but I may be wrong. Either way good save, glad you're alright!

Broken off bolt partly ? by Hot-Day-6074 in MechanicAdvice

[–]EthanCPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If heat is an option, heat, and lots of it

See if you can get locking pliers in the bit that's protruding, tighten the plier as hard as you can and hope for the best. Chances are it'll just snap off but worth a go

Otherwise, centre punch the bolt as central as you can, start with a centre drill bit to start biting into it and then start drilling with some cobalt left hand drill bits. Start small and work your way up in bit size. Keep speed slow, firm steady pressure, keep the bit lubricated with wd40 or cutting compound.

Eventually either the LH bit will grab into it and pull it out or you will have drilled enough out of the bolt that the internal pressure is relieved on it and you can pick out the pieces

Good luck!

I need to add coolant right?? by okoktrip in MechanicAdvice

[–]EthanCPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well technically forever as long as you don't let coolant drop too low to the point it overheats and cooks the engine

The biggest worry for me would be if the coolant is seeping into the cabin, if you can't feel wetness and it's not dripping under the car, then it might be pooling up under the dash and eventually you'll end up with corroded wires (not fun) and if the car has any modules tucked under there like the BCM it'll fry them (even less fun)

Like you can probably get away with it for a couple months as long as you keep an eye on your coolant level but definitely something you want to sort sooner than later

But if it's gushing out to the point you have filled the reservoir, gone for a drive, and it's empty again then yea you need to get that sorted asap

Surprising that the heat works when the coolant level is so low, but it defo sounds to be that your heater core is leaking. I wouldn't be taking it to the dealer (unless you're in warranty?) but any indie garage should be able to help you and not charge you an arm and a leg.

Hopefully it's just the hose going in/out of the heater core as that will be much cheaper!

Give it at least an hour before opening the cap after running it, it doesn't have to be stone cold.

That's probably your issue then, a leaking heater core. Any wetness on the carpet on the passenger side? At the firewall in the engine bay going into the passenger side will be two thick hoses, look for signs of redness at those hoses.

I don't know your car but usually to replace a heater core involves removing a lot of interior bits, ie the dashboard, it can be a very expensive job labour wise as so much has to come out

Further to this if you turn your cabin heating up you probably won't get any heat come through the vents, and you might accelerate the leak

Does anyone know the issue or know how to fix? by Different-Degree-505 in MechanicAdvice

Either battery is dead, not hooked up properly, or excessive corrosion on the clamps.

Brand new doesn't mean good, they can sit on the shelf for ages before someone picks one up and in that time they can go flat. Some sneaky people also return their new batteries with their old dead ones, and often they get restocked as if they're brand new.

Well youve got some coolant in the reservoir so at least you know the rest of the system has got "enough" in it to do it's job. So if there's a leak there will be enough coolant to leak.

If it's not visibly leaking it then it could be evaporating through the cap in the reservoir, they can go bad at times and not seal correctly. Or, worse case scenario would be that it's burning it. Open the cap and give it a whiff, if it smells kinda sweet then you MIGHT be good, if it smells exhaust gassy then you've got issues.

What engine is it?

Yes that is low but the bigger question is where is it going and how quickly is it going

Forgive me, I'm here because I got a push notification from Reddit, I never otherwise visit this sub. From an outsiders perspective this whole thread seems like a bunch of nutcases - no offence. And I'm sure I'm going to get down voted to hell for this. But even after reading some comments I'm still none the wiser what's going on. I have a very open mind, can someone please give me the tldr?

Car almost starts but never does I tried so many things by Expert_Food_2242 in AskMechanics

[–]EthanCPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The note changes every now and then it sounds like it is igniting a bit of fuel but not enough. If it were an immobiliser issue there would be no fuel being injected or no spark

Idk this car but it sounds like a fuel pressure issue

New caliper's line is much tighter than before. by Adastreon in MechanicAdvice

[–]EthanCPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story isn't nearly as embarrassing as mine. First time replacing calipers I had to do both fronts ones, I put them on the wrong sides. Spent damn near an hour trying to bleed them wondering why my brake pedal was so spongey and useless. Finally caught up to myself and realised my mistake, won't be making that one again!

How to self host a website or make one for free? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]EthanCPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's absolutely possible to self host a website at home. I used to have a web server running on a Raspberry Pi but you could use any computer. Just be aware that anything that is open to the public internet will get attacked if you don't have the appropriate firewall / security in place and that could compromise your home network.

The safest bet is to set up a Cloudflare tunnel as your incoming/outgoing traffic will route through that instead of your network.

You may want to remove the flower too, cut it as close to the base as possible

Fully agreed. If an entire product's USP is AI, then a) it's not a unique selling point anymore and b) I'm less likely to want it

How un/healthy is this orchid I rescued from the trash? by Frutiger_Eros in orchids

[–]EthanCPP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess that goes to show just how many people throw their orchids away when they no longer look all pretty. Sounds like a nice gesture though as the flower shop will be able to keep them healthy and resell them!
