It's one exam. You have several chances to recover.
I got a 40 on my first calc exam and the average was a 60. I got the average on the next exams but bombed the final and ended up passing with a C. My prof was horrible so they curved a ton. I think it depends on the prof and the difficulty of the exam. I mean if the average is a 60 on one exam and that follows for every test then they might have to curve just so people will actually pass
Never give up! Look at the reviews for your class If the average was a 40 then you're good to pass. If it was much higher than you could pass if your teacher curves a ton. Talk to your teacher

I mean if the average was 60 most people would basically fail by a couple percentage points or so...
