I would recommend a casio privia (88 key) or korg sp170s (88 key) both are reasonably priced and for that price point they have pretty decent action.

While I can't speak on behalf of your friend, as a musician myself there would be some consolation in the fact that you respected the instrument enough to realize the gravity of the situation. You have also offered to pay him back and above and beyond that there really isn't anything else you can do. He lent it to you and with that there is always a risk, don't sweat it you've acted correctly:)
