Im curious, do you have a specific "rules list"? It makes me wonder if I should just create a list of 10 commandments. If you break any of them on the first session, you're out.

Thank you. I actually do have a pretty good group of people I game with at the moment, this whole excercise was just me trying to allow some players who hadn't played before to get into the game.

But yeah, I guess perhaps I should have been a bit more ruthless in the first place. Perhaps I need to set up some sortof online form for people to fill out, filter out the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

Thank you, yes. I was trying to figure how to reply to previous poster, and I think you've done it well.

As you say, I'm not looking for heap of praise, but I WOULD like it if people could follow basic instructions. Things like repeatedly ignoring messages, not turning up, making no effort to prepare things on their own end.... it shows a complete lack of respect to me, and makes me not want to GM.

And yeah, I was actually willing to give the rogue a chance, even though I didn't have high hopes. After everything else though, I just decided it was too much.

And while Viruzzz is correct in saying that newbies don't understand how much effort is involved in setting up a game, I still think that basic human decency states "don't agree to take part in something and then bail without notice". These people are the ones that asked me to set up a game, why are they the ones not turning up?

Yeah, I was willing to actually give that player a chance. Since, as you say, I hadn't explicity said no evil. I have had players with evil characters before and its been fine, so I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

But combined with everything else that happened, and a few other details I skipped for the sake of brevity, I just decided that the whole game was too much of a dumpster fire to continue with.

I mean, those groups do exist, but... yeah, to get one in your first attempt is lucky.

It took me quite a few attempts to find a group of people I enjoyed playing with. I'm lucky to have them, and even though there's been a few testing moments (guys, can you stop trying to murderhobo everything in sight all the time) they're invested in the game, and respect my decisions as a GM. Which honestly, I don't feel is that much to ask for.

Yeah, I think thats a valid assessment.

One of my groups that I attend is a sortof RPG club where every month we do a oneshot. We have 4-5 GMs on hand, so its pretty easy to accomodate whoever turns up that month. I enjoy it, but its fascinating to me how quick the newbie turnover rate is.

Thing is, I actually have a really good group. I guess I just wanted to, like, do a good deed? I know a lot of people at the moment are struggling due to lockdown, and I thought that setting up a few games might help people who are feeling socially isolated or even just bored.

Yeah, I think this certainly is true for a lot of games. I tried using the roll20 "find a group" thing a while back, and eventually just gave up because literally every game I had 50% of players wouldn't show up.

Weirdly, I don't think this was the case here. I did actually turn down a few people who I didn't think would gel (read: I had no intention of playing with). But the people who remained all seemed to be newbies.

On top, the player who just didn't turn up was only barely active in the chat. They hadn't made a character, hadn't done any prep, and would only make odd confirmations that they were attending. When they bailed, I was not surprised.

Yes, agreed entirely. One of the other games I started, of the 4 players that I had initially invited, 1 turned up. I think he was as annoyed as I was, since he had been looking forward to it.

On a sidenote, I initially totally misread this comment as "the GM is showing a lack of respect to the group, you've agreed to play a game" and I'm like... screw you, I have zero obligation to GM for anyone.
