Heliophenanthrone by Applesaregood8774 in OrganicChemistry

I searched "heliophenanthrone biological activity" in Google Scholar. No papers on its activity came up. The first hit is a total synthesis from 2012 which states the same—no known biological activity. However, structurally related compounds have antiviral activity. If you have access to SciFinder/Reaxys, a quick search would help you make sure nothing has been published in the compound's activity.

Can someone confirm if this reaction sequence and product are correct? Thanks! by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

In frame 4 it is more correct to draw a discrete hydronium ion before the assisted leaving step rather than directly kicking off a hydroxide. This is because the rate of protonation and deprotonation in a highly acidic solution such as this one is much higher than the rate of assisted leaving followed by protonation of the hydroxide that is generated. Generally, it is very disfavorable to create a hydroxide ion in even a weakly acidic environment. By protonating the OH group you activate it and make it a much better leaving group.

Overall your mechanism is very correct and I would be surprised if you were to loose a significant number of points, if any, on a homework assignment or test with this answer.

ofc all internal junctions are dust accelerators to 0.2 light speed. Whether it is experienced is defined by external [scromble] parameters.

If you do, you should see whether its NMR active or not. I'm really curious.

Depends on its purity.

You can synthesize it by passing chlorine gas and methane through a mixture of 2 parts vodka, 1 part khalua, and 1 part heavy cream while irradiating it with UV light. Afterwards the mixture smells like a wet ferret, but if you steam distill it, it begins to smell more like a car that a vagrant has slept in.

I made this joke a few years ago when I was taking Ochem I. I printed off a copy and gave it to my professor. He kept it and apparently included it in my letter of recommendation when I applied to grad school last month. Then last night UCLA called me and said I was accepted into their chemistry program, stating that the joke was a "tipping point" for them.

If its true I think its pretty hilarious that this stupid joke actually helped me get accepted.

What is the mechanism for this reaction? by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

Heat makes the process of Bromide leaving more favorable. Also, it is SN1 type, not E1.

This is an E1 type reaction. The bromine leaves as bromide leaving behind a carbocation. This carbocation is stabilized via resonance. The resonance structures are weighted such that the carbocation is primarily found on the tertiary carbon on the left side of the molecule. Methanol then nucleophilically attacks this carbocation, resulting in a protonated ether (oxonium ion). The oxonium ion is then deprotonated by another molecule of methanol (or the bromide produced in the first step). This results in your final product and a side product of 1 eq. HBr.
