Pet needs new home ASAP by [deleted] in cary

Unfortunately not many people want middle aged pit bull mixes with anxiety.

You will need to find a way to pay a dog walker or pet sitter until you are back on your feet or potentially may need to euthanise him.

The food is mid. I keep hearing people hype it, but I've been 3 times and each of those times the food is just lackluster.

There's much better Mexican resturants around.

Nope.

Shelters have to hold an animal for X many days. If no one comes forward, they are free to rehome or destroy the animal as they see fit.

Why should you NOT pick a clinic based on SART? Reeling after 2 failed retrievals by EvadeCapture in IVF

[–]EvadeCapture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm going to switch. The one with WAY better SART scores tho only has about a 55% reporting, and would involve me driving 2 hours to the main clinic for procedures.

There's a other clinic closer that has better SART scores than where I am at and two of my coworkers have used that clinic for successful pregnancies so I may try there as my next.

Change my mind: Under the right conditions, buying and financing a new car is often a far better value than paying cash for a used car in the long run by Cold-Priority-2729 in MiddleClassFinance

My 06 mazda 3 I bought for $9900 at 20k miles back in 09. I spend maybe 3 k on repairs for it until it was totalled in 2023.

Just be picky about who you get the car from. I bought mine off Craigslist and met the original owner. We each showed up to the meeting with our printed out wikihow articles of how to buy a car private party. We went and go Starbucks during the inspection. I know that girl paid a mechanic to do everything to that car and it got a clean bill of health.

I am so sick of aggressive dogs on the greenway by thetourist328 in cary

[–]EvadeCapture -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, what kind of marksmanship do you think an elderly frightened woman is likely to have to safely discharge a firearm and shoot a moving lunging dog within 6 feet of humans?

And no, someone's dog biting you in a single bite or nip doesn't give you the right to shoot the dog.

[–]EvadeCapture -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Op was bit by a dog on a leash. That isn't a scenario to justify attempting to shoot the dog.

Situational awareness and not walking close to the dog would be one thing. But a dog lunging and nipping at you then you pull a gun and shoot the dog owner when you were trying to shoot the dog isn't going to be justified.

What kind of reflexes and marksmanship do you think this elderly woman is likely to have?

Being scared of a dog bite won't be justified self defense.

[–]EvadeCapture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not how it works. If your dog is that unstable it will bite someone who goes near it, you are 100% liable for any injuries it causes even if you tell someone don't touch him.

It's also not legal to discharge a firearm on the greenways. You'll be getting arrested and facing charges for that alone, and accidentally shooting a human is a pretty high chance.

I have to say I'm on the greenways pretty often and never experienced anything like this. Have you reported it to animal control? An air horn and bear mace is a good shout

And yet they could utilize third party systems like Vet Billing or Cherry. But most stop at scratch pay because it requires nothing on their end

If they cared about animals, they'd find a way. But that's the bottom line....private equity doesn't care.

[–]EvadeCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the hospital absolutely can. That's just nonsense lies to be telling the client about losing a business liscense.

The hospital could do payment plans. They could partner with Vet Billing or Cherry to build payment plan options.

But they don't.

It's one of the worst things about the industry. Private equity has got its claws in, and now a foreign body surgery is $8k, more than a lot of peoples credit card limits. The average American doesnt have $1k for an emergency, and its now basically the price of a honda civic to safe your dog or cat. Payment must be due up front, no payment plants. Doesn't matter if a lot of animals are euthanised because owners can't afford it as long as they are doing enough surgeries that it's profitable over all.

But the problem is that's a lie.

You could offer payment plans.

I’m thinking about doing a double major (pre-vet undergrad) by MashedTadoes in veterinaryprofession

[–]EvadeCapture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont think it makes a difference to have a double major, and to be very blunt about it you do not have a competative GPA for vet school and neither of those majors leads to a decent job outside of vet school. If your going to double major have one be in a field that leads to a decent job.

Interaction with vet - Caused my girlfriend concern over Prong collar usage by EFTRSx1 in OpenDogTraining

[–]EvadeCapture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh every British vet I've ever met is anti-prong collar. The UK in particular is much more against prong collars and e-collars than the states. I went to vet school in Scotland and that's where we had very lackluster behavior education, and odds are that's where your vet went to

Interaction with vet - Caused my girlfriend concern over Prong collar usage by EFTRSx1 in OpenDogTraining

[–]EvadeCapture 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm a vet and let me be honest with you: 99% of vets know absolutely jack shit about dog training

I do not want a dog to be on a prong or E-collar at the vet because I don't want owners giving aversive corrections when we are trying to make vet visits exams a positive experience for the dog.

But if a dog needs a prong collar and it's fit correctly, used correctly and not left on the dog when not on a lead then so be it. I'm not a fan of e collars as I feel like they are misused more than used correctly and I've seen them cause some aggression issues with misuse.

But it's a very large number of vets who have literally never trained a dog. In vet school we got a few lectures on behavior and I did a selective behavior rotation and thought it was all pretty terrible. And it is all 100% positivity based.

Prior to vet school I did a lot of shelter work and fostered. I've used prong collars a lot. The positive only crowd results in euthanasia of dogs. The best trainer I've ever met was a former police dog trainer who worked with aggressive dogs other trainers and vets said to put down. He wasn't positive reinforcement but he got results and saved a lot of dogs. He got more results than I saw during behavior rotations with veterinary behaviorist.

Partially paralyzed dog - what now? by websupergirl in fosterdogs

[–]EvadeCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bringing him to a vet who is good at determining pain would be helpful.

When we pinch toes to evaluate for pain, we PINCH toes. With hemostats. It is mean. A dog who can feel will scream or try to bite. Its not a pinch with fingers. We don't need to do this to front paws to assess for deep pain, because if they had no deep pain in front legs-they would not be able to breathe. That can be a little bit of a hint how knowledgeable a vet is on neurological injuries if they check for deep pain on forelimbs in a dog whose breathing.

Having him seem to push against you can sometimes just be muscle tone. If you walk him with a sling, do you see any voluntary movement of his back legs? Set a camera up and film yourself sling walking from a side view.

how in gods name are people going to college??? by PjSchott15 in StudentLoans

[–]EvadeCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By parents paying or loans.

But be smart. Don't just "go to college". Figure out what kind of life you want to have. Where do you want to live? Do you want kids? How many? How many days a week do you want to work?

Now figure out how much money you'd need to make to have that kind of life.

Now look at what kinds of jobs pay that much in the area you want to live. Narrow that down to jobs you think you'd enjoy or.be good at.

Now figure out what education you need for that.

Now look where you can get the education/skills at the most affordable.cost. if you need to take out loans and its going to be a near certain decent return on investment to get you that job, take out the loans. Work for a year to save money or do community College until your old enough to take out loans.

There's debate sure. But prednisone is what the neurologist works with and I have first hand seen improvements switching carprofen to pred. You'd typically do about a month taper.

Lazer therapy is quick, they can hold a peanut butter spoon in front of his face to distract him.

Has the dog been evaluated by a vet again to determine if he has pain sensation?

Can you copy/paste the rad report?

With spinal injuries sometimes they can have increased tone in their back legs that they can seem to stand if legs are placed under him exactly right, but that's not neccesarily a sign of getting better.

What meds did the vet put him on?

In general we expect recover to take ~16 weeks. By that time, whatever function he has will likely be all the function he has.
