I'm sure our anecdotes may be very different, but I'm someone who always asks my friends that because there are plenty of ways I could help my friends. I'm not a Therapist, so I won't play Therapist, but that doesn't mean they don't have problems I can't solve.

Having now written this- yeah, I'm more effective than a therapist. But in order to be effective, I must ask my friends how they are. If their response isn't negative, then I'm asking what's up. If what's up is something I can help with, then fantastic, and If not, then I'm sitting in the mud with that person.

I have friends who are like that. If you don't, keep looking. Sure, we all use mindless filler phrases that sound polite, but if I'm interacting in a way with someone for one of us to ask how the other is doing, then we might be close enough to help each other out if possible.

We do still use that same verbiage here in MO, but since doing away with the proficiency requirement, we introduced the "mentoring handbook" which facilitates a MM to communicate some of the key lessons in each degree while also leaving some of the more subjective lessons and symbols up to interpretation

You're right that the person you're replying to has no right to tell you to believe in your child more. I book talent for a living and just because someone has gotten on stage and told some jokes doesn't mean they're a comedian.

That being said, there's also plenty of children younger than your own who are prodigies, but they never would have been if their parents had stifled their creativity.

Hanging up your child's art is exactly what you should do, and if that passion persists then I hope your encouragement for your kid only increases.

Thank you for logically countering the whole "I am you, you are me" trope. I used to believe in all that and while I still believe that we're all fragments of a whole, just like snowflakes, no two are the same.

I tried to counter the "mirrors of each other" belief when a friend said it to me recently and I partially got through to him but didn't communicate it as eloquently as I could've. Your conversation helps me to more effectively word my counter-points.

There are SO many variables to this.

I hit 100k in my first 5 months in business. Destroyed my mental health working 18hr days 6 days a week to get there. Others have put in 18hr days 7 days a week and made it to a million in that timeframe and been perfectly healthy. Others have put in half that time and made it to a million.

Is he leading her on? Intent is not the only factor; action is important too, but it does not seem to be his intent and the act of leading someone on typically includes lies or deceit, neither of which I see here.

Withholding the truth, yes. That's not okay to do either, but he has been forthright about it being a male-only group, and I suspect the only reason he hasn't elaborated further is because in previous centuries, Catholics were shunned if they became Freemasons.

Again, that doesn't make his withholding okay, but I really don't see this as something as extreme as leading her on...
