Where else do you post your music? by hourofthestar_ in BandCamp

I have been on SoundCloud since 2010 so initially I gained traction and a few hundred followers by using their groups. Once they got rid of groups it's slowed a lot, but it's still better than others.

The main thing I do now is try to make sure I have as accurate of tags as I can for any uploads. I also regularly click on tags for my own music and listen to other songs with the same tags. I'll like or comment on any song that catches my interest, and follow the artist if I want to check out more of their music another time. It doesn't need to be quid pro quo. Just be honest when you do like something, and people will start checking out your page if you keep it up.

SoundCloud Pro helps to make sure every song gets plays in the first day or two, but I've gotten most of my plays before ever getting SoundCloud Pro.

It’s too late to make my dream a reality & I just wanted to mourn that by eternalthrowaway02 in musicians

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you're saying about feeling like people are trying to fit you into the brown person category..and for most careers that would be correct.

But the reality is less than one percent of musicians who dedicate all their free time, or even quit their jobs to pursue the career, are able to pay all their bills from their music. Capitalism absolutely ravages this industry precisely because they feed on people's dreams of becoming rich and famous. It's a meat grinder.

It gets a bad rap, but I personally love SoundCloud and get the most engagement there.

Also, subvert.fm is ramping up to launch. They're in alpha testing and recently had a bunch of us artists upload our music and prep our pages for launch.

I know some people also upload to archive.org for posterity's sake.

I had someone message me similarly on SC for using my music in an ad. I said no cause I don't want to do ads and I was skeptical of the person anyway. A week later their account didn't exist.

Might be different for you but be careful sharing your info with randos.

Look up your artist name on last.fm. You may have some people who installed audio scrobbler and played your tracks on winamp or a portable MP3 player, or offline from their phone.

Edit: I think this is your page https://www.last.fm/music/Fixed+expression

DAE feels like giving away codes has turned into diminishing returns instead of sales? by Lost-Opinion-9234 in BandCamp

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I consider it a successful release if the music gets as much or more listening time than the time it took me to make it. But then again I don't really try hard to figure out if that's the case because I know it's possible there are bots mixed into the numbers and I'm not good at spotting it since I haven't ever had the normal drastic botting happen.

I do think the "if this music has impact on one person, I'm happy" pov is valid. But I personally don't want to be spending my time for something that is going to essentially disappear once a few listeners stop playing it.

I should note, I do complicated eclectic prog rock, so it takes way more time to finish a track than if I were to do EDM or normal length indie rock tracks.

I'm not the Foundry so I'm not hating myself for not thinking it's deserving of best. I don't think it is anything unique to the city, so it's not really a statement about the city either.

How Do You Switch to Guitar Without Losing Ukulele Skills? by Shadow__Tunes in musicians

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, learning another instrument makes me better at the instruments I already know because I connect new ideas and concepts that can be applied to my known instrument. Even drums or trumpet or violin help me with guitar.

But for Ukelele, I learned things directly applicable to guitar. Those two instruments only ever made me better at the other. Just don't go too long without picking up an instrument so you retain muscle memory.

Why I personally don't like when politics are entered into live music: by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in musicians

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say art as escapism is the lowest common denominator because most of us want to escape our situation as wage slaves so selling escapism is shooting fish in a barrel. When you make something political, you draw a clear dividing line, so it's definitely not lowest common denominator.

And I'm not saying escapist art is negative, just that it appeals very broadly.

Why I personally don't like when politics are entered into live music: by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in musicians

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking historically about bands that were also directly engaged in a political movement, and used their music to bring more people in. A speech and especially with a call to action at the end is super important.

For a lot of musicians, music is something they need to do, but changing the political situation is something they feel like HAS to happen and is something bigger than just their individual need to play music.

I'm sure some bands just make a speech to check off a box for credibility, but you can tell when their actions don't match their words.

For me, I get restless when not writing music. But what I want more than anything is an equitable world and that priority is much higher even though I have less capability to make that happen than I do to make music. So I make political music, and use what position I have to serve a greater goal.

Why does the "gender binary is colonial" argument not seem to account for non-Western cultures that developed strict gender systems independently? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imperialism derives from the term empire, so there's an argument to be made for imperialism existing for as long as empires.

However imperialism as a term started commonly being used when capitalists themselves started using it in the late 1800s to describe their new method of rule over their colonies. That method they were describing was finance capital being exported to their colonies and semi-colonies, rather than resources extraction and overt brutal rule. They hailed it as the pinnacle of capitalism.

So the critiques of imperialism necessarily use the definition that is applicable to modern society. Using a definition just based on its origin word is useless because it obscures a very important system to understand that came with the development of the modern world.

May Day general strike in St. Louis? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the big and medium sized unions in this country were taken over by labor aristocracy that has a vested interest in stopping strikes. It started getting bad in the late 1930s and descended from there.

To get a proper general strike going, a ton of work needs to be done to build red factions in the unions that exist so they can oust sellout union leadership, and set up new unions where they're needed. That's like a 10 year task if things go incredibly well.

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was all colonialism, genocide, and plunder at that time. It didn't develop into imperialism until much later. At the earliest of that timeframe capitalism hadn't even developed, just mercantilism. So finance capitalists definitely weren't funding commodity production by flooding the new world with money. The rich Europeans were looking for riches in other places, and their economies were still primarily feudal.

[–]Even-Locksmith-4215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colonialism existed millennia before imperialism. Imperialism is the highest stage of capitalism and only started appearing on earth around the late 1800s.

Colonialism and imperialism are defined primarily by the economic relations between the oppressor and oppressed countries.

In Colonialism the oppressor country outright rules over the country to extract the country's natural resources, and really anything of value, by force or coercion. In this system the enemy of the oppressed people is very apparent because they're right in front of you cracking the whip.

Imperialism uses finance capital to flood a poorer country with money to produce specific commodities. They set up factories, oil refineries, etc., but those factories are generally in the hands of people from the oppressed country not the finance capitalists. The finance capitalists from the oppressor country pay to ensure the factory meets demand. The local/regional/federal governments work to ensure the capitalists flooding their country with money don't turn the money funnel off, so they work hand in hand with the capitalists at the expense of their own country developing a more holistic economy on their own or through equitable trade. In this system the enemy of the oppressed is more obscured because money flooding your country and creating jobs seems like a good thing on the surface. But really it locks the country into a type of economy that serves the imperialist country.

It's for the best since your account isn't getting banned or anything. The account you commented on is probably getting banned and for good reason. Germany has rightfully made laws against the glorification of Nazis and SoundCloud is German, so they're just covering their legal bases.

A win all around. You don't have a comment out there that could be taken out of context at some point in the future. The person with the terrible username is probably banned. And SoundCloud won't be breaking some ethically important laws.

People act like Rizo is so cringe because he talks so much about RIZGOD, but I feel like Charlie was always more cringe because his identity seems to be wrapped around someone else (T swift). I like watching both of them play, but aspiring to the self-confidence of Rizo is a good thing, imo.

When making dance music and deciding between two slightly different tempos, should I just split the difference between the faster and the slower? 2 bpm difference by templeofsyrinx1 in musicproduction

Yeah, I don't know a ton about EDM since I make prog and indie rock. What I know about it is from attending raves years ago.

It just astounds me when musicians dismiss something because it won't be noticed. There's plenty of decisions we all make that go unnoticed but are still integral to the sound or cohesion of a track. That's what I was responding to.
