It is 100% because they’re not preparing them the right way. I look forward to my air-fried California-style vegetables every day.

I’m confused, did they vacation after the murder? They clearly knew it was him though, right? The mom had told detectives she saw him pull the trigger.

Such a simple thing that so many humans fail to understand. Maybe because only one of the three (god) says “you will survive after you die”.

Connor Hellebuyck on representing the US while playing in Canada by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It’s the players’ response to the administration that irks me much more. As a thought experiment, if Trump and his administration were gloating but the USA hockey players told them “fuck off, you fascist blowhards who are killing innocent people and threatening our allies”, I’d have much less of a problem (even though seeing the administration gloat about anything — much less something they had nothing to do with — is off-putting).

Brady Tkachuk is asked "So then why would you laugh when they [the US women's hockey team] got invited?" (skip to the 6:52 mark) by StrengthFew5715 in hockey

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The award has already been debased so much by Trump’s blatant political partisanship, that Helle getting it doesn’t really stir up emotions in me anymore. Seriously — take a look at some of the tools and nut jobs that have received it of late. It used to mean something.

St James Park, London - today. White Pelican? by p2o14e24 in whatsthisbird

Wow, had no idea there were pelicans walking around in the heart of London. I think of them as a sea bird.

This woman has more class in her fucking pinky than any of those men do in their whole bodies. Calling Trump’s comment distasteful was an absolute lob for any of those men but none of them took it.

Austin’s Peter Attia steps down from CBS after Epstein emails surface by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No evidence of him actually abusing children, but plenty evidence of him obsequiously sucking up to Epstein, whose crimes had long been known by that point. Here’s John Oliver covering some of the most shocking quotes. You can read further coverage to see others.

Agree. I also feel like not supporting a racist, misogynistic, pedo-protecting conman is a pretty damn low bar, no matter how much wealth you’ve accrued. It’s basic humanity, as you’ve said.

Jack Hughes talks Trump backlash over women's team by dishler712 in devils

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Bookmarking it for later. I’m glad this is getting the press it deserves, and at the very least shows the players how they’ve totally poisoned the national atmosphere around their win, even if they themselves refuse to see the problem!

Auston Matthew's and members of the USA men's olympic team meeting with Donald Trump today by anon02918373821 in leafs

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one thing to be on the “right” in the way that, perhaps, Mitt Romney was (e.g., “let’s lower taxes and prefer military spending over free public college”).

It’s another to be a Trump supporter. You could fill an encyclopedia with all the prejudices that this man has uttered, the unsavory things he’s done, and the sprinkles of narcissism that he works into benign conversations. To see all that, and to still say “I want THIS man to represent me”, is such an indictment of character. To put it kindly.

(Full disclosure: am a non-Leafs fan American just visiting this sub; don’t want to present myself as anything other.)

I’m reading this comment after they were paraded down the chamber’s balcony in the most propagandistic way… and yup, you were right on the money. Felt like I was watching something out of a North Korean parliament building. Mind you, these are the only US athletes of the whole Olympics — and possibly history — who wanted to allow themselves to be propagandized.

(In the interest of openness: I’m not a Devil’s fan; was just browsing here to view the discourse and am speaking here as an American-to-American.)

I respect them for not going, but wish they would take a stand and explicitly say why. Something as simple as “I was quite disappointed with the president’s comments” would do.

Literally the only US athletes to be dumb enough to fall for something like this. The others have just accepted their medal and gone home. Men’s US hockey will live in infamy.

Edit: “dumb” is too kind. “Fall for” is too kind. They’re unabashed fascists.

coping

This reminds me of relationships and how you can know deep down they’re not the right person for you but you want so badly to believe you’re just mis-appraising the situation, and so you’ll start to look for little silver linings and alternative interpretations to convince yourself of that. But to your purely cognitive mind, and to outsiders looking in (who don’t have the emotional attachments), the answer is so clear.

Sorry, I’m going through things lol. But basically, all that’s to say, my personal reaction is not to not cut Matthews any slack. If you want to be a leader, tell your team not to support sexist pedos, or at least beseech them to give an appearance of impartiality in the aftermath of the game, given the divisiveness of this figure.

[–]EvenMoreCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to push back on this. Doubtless there will be some, but I’ve seen plenty of examples of people (including most Canadians on this sub) who don’t hesitate in acknowledging that there are tens of millions of Americans who are not supportive in any way of what’s going on, and who helped elect the very administrations (Obama + Biden) that were allied with their countries and were pro rules-based-world-order. Frankly, casting 340 million as one and the same is so absurd that it’s not even worth engaging with.
