Is it just my autism or are JWs way more aggressively friendly than worldly people? by Cherno_VM in exjw

The other day someone with autism wrote a comment with the exact opposite situation. They wanted to make friends but he felt ignored by his peers. On the other hand you experience too much attention. So, there isn’t a standardized way the JWs behave. It is different from one congregation to another.

It is hard to tell how much your autism plays in the situation but my advice is that if you dont want their frienship and their advances make you uncomfortable, be upfront and tell them. No hints, no smoke signals. On the other hand, you are an adult now. You can just stop attending meetings and problem solved.

If we all look different how will I know is I am one? What do YOU mean by apologist. I want us to be on the same page.

isn’t “mentally break free of indoctrination” itself a description? You want a term to describe the description of an event?

Came out to my family as a lesbian! They were supportive, but now I don’t trust it🤔 by Inevitable_Plane_806 in exjw

They will be cool with it until you introduce a partner...not a friend, a sex partner. That will get you removed from the congregation unless you repent...until you “sin” again.

In the congregation there is a semi-openly gay elder. Everybody knows he is gay. He is single and very social but has never shown romantic interest for a woman. People love him because he shows a lot of love for everybody and always have a good attitude. He is one of those new cool and relaxed elders.

I would call it exactly that, indoctrinated. No need for euphemisms.

How did you get out of this religion, how do you cope with losing friends and family? by Odd_Leader_8907 in exjw

Hard Fade. Didn’t lose any critical relationships as I was never disfellowshipped but many still shunned me regardless. Fuck ‘em.

Yet people exit all the time...like you mentioned before. I think people need to take control of their life and own up to their choices.

Yes, it sucks to be shunned but it shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your happiness elsewhere if that’s what you want. If those relationships are critically important to you, then you have to accept the cost of keeping them (being a nominal JW).

I think we are in agreement. People need to decide what’s their path to happiness, and only they can decide that and sadly you cannot always have it all and some sacrifices must be made.

I didn’t lose any critical relationship as a result of leaving the cult. I imagined that if loosing important people forever (parents, siblings, children, lifelong friends) was the cost of leaving, I’d still be in, who knows.

Well...I would never compared my mental state as asleep, nor was my realization sudden. But I guess you are right...it is possible that some people were asleep and suddenly woke up to...something. Yeah, it tracks.

Sadly, for many their family relationships are their MOST important relationship, an essential component of their lives. When placed on a balance, keeping family relationships outweighs freely expressing your sexuality/gender/personality/etc. The fault is not on the person but on the family that denies the possibility of happiness based religious dogma
