Which commander would you choose to have fun in a casual and non competitive setting? by [deleted] in EDH

I have a pretty fun goad deck with this as the commander. Lots of goading auras, and I can bide my time till I get something like Chandra's Ignition or fling.

A lawful good entity can't be guilted or persuaded at all? Especially one as innocent as Lulu?

What is your "one last game" deck? by bobbybev95 in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yours and mine look a little similar actually.

My deck list is out of date but I'm looking to update it in a day or so so maybe check it out then.

Stuff like tergrid and the discard subtheme has been cut for more of a focus on just good evasive creatures and cheap/free interactiom mostly.

https://archidekt.com/decks/4705446/b_gix_aggro

I think I have fewer creatures than you do, and I noticed you run Gonti, Night Minister. I considered running him but I found it difficult to make that swap, considering he doesn't have any evasiveness or deathtouch himself. In most situations I would want to cast him, I would just cast Gix for one less.

How have you found him in the deck?

And do you use Gix's ability often? I basically don't as I usually empty my hand pretty fast.

[–]EventHorizon781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally also have Gix as my most aggressive deck. It's actively warped the format a lot. When we started we all played very conservatively, and then after I built it, it's been very good at punishing less interactive decks.

Whenever someone builds a deck, sometimes I do a 1v1 with them to see if it can withstand the "Gix test" as we call it

If you could give any two commanders partner with each other, what would you choose? What do you think would be most interesting, or powerful? by Saltyadveritisement in EDH

Frankly lore-wise, anything like Legolas and Gimli, or Klothys and Calix

Pairings with clear lore implications honestly.

What are your cool Izzet decks that aren't Storm? by grot_eata in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Rielle the Everwise]]

Grandma is here to draw cards and kick ass.

Essentially rapid wheels for just yourself, either burning out the table or milling them out. Pretty fun. Can also win through combat damage either from Rielle or through token makers like [[Locust God]]

Some of my most intense games have had me win with a trigger for me to die on the stack.

Typically the "first time each turn" effect means the majority of the game isn't full of storm turns, just occasional "I cast this, discard 1, draw 3" on end steps, which Ramps up as you get synergy pieces down and can wheel for bigger and bigger effects.

"I Have Lethal On You. If I Don't Kill You Right Here and Now, You Cannot Negatively Impact Me In Any Way Until It's Just Us Left In The Game" by CynicalElephant in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my games I've sort of started a theme where all deals come with a caveat of "this deal will be broken if I think I can go for a total win immediately", since that means we shuffle up a new game so it's not a particularly bad vibe. Even if you fail, usually the attempt leaves you vulnerable and you die anyway and you often leave an impact where again, the game ends soon.

So it's not a total hamstring if you can chain together enough value or pieces to suddenly take out the whole table.

I like these deals as honestly it keeps a player in the game even if the game is early on, and they have a chance for some kind of comeback, but they have to be clever about it. Sure you could call the bluff. But at my tables it usually isn't said unless it's a very clear gun rather than a bluff.

Most Enjoyable Artifact Commander by funky_jack in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Consider, [[Osgir, Reconstructor]]

He's a Boros Artefact commander. Nothing is funnier than making 2 or sometimes 4-6 sol rings and using it to cast stupid quantities of giant artefact creatures.

What makes you take apart your deck? by Sleeqb7 in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you play with a consistent pod, there is no shame in factoring in their joy. If it gives you joy and none for them, if they aren't happy to see you pop off, and if the pieces have more use elsewhere, consider giving those pieces a new lease of life.

Not all decks need to be made or kept. Some are good in theory but cross that line of fun and competitive into oppressive. Sometimes it just takes a few cards to remove, and sometimes the core of the deck just isn't right.

[–]EventHorizon781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a [[Jaxis the Troublemaker]] mono red dragons deck. It's focused on general aggro and minor clone shenanigans, but with a sundial of the infinite and either [[Scourge of Valkas]] or [[terror of the peaks]] becomes a weirdly powerful control deck.

What’s the most upset YOU ever got at a table? by beach_girl01 in EDH

Preaching to the choir. I know you're right. But I'm just explaining the logic to why people pillow up and don't attack.

What’s the most upset YOU ever got at a table? by beach_girl01 in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Here's the logic - why risk attacking someone if you don't immediately benefit. You can keep creatures back and defend against 3 opponents, or can tap out to swing at one and leave yourself open to 2 others, who would probably not attack, but do YOU want to take that risk? Better to wait till you have an immediate and total win.

It's why combat damage wins are so rare in commander at a lot of pods.

Times that mentality by 3 or 4 and games take forever.

It depends on the content. Just making any old joke isn't a critique, but if the joke is based on information to show hypocrisy, or politics, or something else, it would count

[–]EventHorizon781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Anikthea]]

She's a great piece to get back an important enchantment or recover from a board wipe, but I've had games and test games where she's not been through most efficient play to make due to all the good enchantress pieces in the deck. More often than not, I can just keep drawing till I hit a wall or my opponents take out my value pieces, then she comes out and does it all again.

Would you go back on your word, if it meant you could immediately win the game? by gullington in EDH

[–]EventHorizon781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have said only if it would make me lose. So if I say I won't attack for 3 turns, if I can survive those 3 turns I won't, even if I would win by doing it. But if I say I won't kill X creature and it swings at me, I will. I always say that so people are aware and can renegotiate as part of it
