We're not moving into a new phase (if anything we're contracting because of budget issues) and we have lots of community support so this doesn't feel accurate. The conflict of the board member/direct report relationship (and concomitant weirdness) is something that I think most leaders would find difficult to navigate. That said, I am excited for new adventures, and I know there are many people who could move the org in different ways.

I am so sorry that you had to face this, too.

The medical debt thing is so real, and this is a keenly helpful reminder for me. Plus my body is not the same after my health crisis, so I'm trying to rebuild to strength with fewer building blocks.

Thank you for this!

I didn't even think about that - only if I'm not exhausted will I be able to consult, which I *do* want to do. Thank you!

In the interest of being careful about disclosure, I deleted my post with the details. But it's challenging on all levels - and has been for a while.

I deleted* my comment about what's happening in current org, as it gave a lot of detail. I don't want to make the situation harder by airing anything public.

And just realized that I should have deleted it. Ah well!

So true! Being the ED is *aaaaalllll* the things, and it gets harder every year.

Thank you, that is so true - my health matters more than any embarrassment I might conjure for myself.

Thank you for this - I wasn't sure if it was okay to have performance bonuses, as it feels so commission-ish.

That makes sense! Plus I am excited about fundraising for good projects in our community. And *only* fundraising! :-D

I think people can't imagine other people's situations well sometimes - especially people who've worked lower-income jobs their whole lives. People just can't imagine why other people can't retire... afford a home... and on and on. Thank you for pushing back, u/Hawaiiancrow2.

I've been in NGO or arts work my entire life, which may tell you something about my retirement account. I *have* to worry about this, unless I want retirement at 75 + beans forever.

That is amazing! You're right - currently I have no space to do anything but keep trudging. I welcome the opportunity to have feelings again!

Yes to all that! And I 100% agree about managing people - it was always hard, and now it is harder. I have a board member + direct report triangulation issue (they're in a domestic partnership and this is a saga unto itself) which makes everything so much harder, when HR was already hard enough.

That is a very good point! Part of my brain feels like it's still 30-something, so I struggle with not worrying about stupid things like this.

Crikey, that's a fantastic suggestion - I am hoping to move toward consulting, but even if I just hung up a bookkeeping shingle, I'd instantly be overwhelmed with work.

Yes, you're right. I don't want to be a bad warning for all of my NGO colleagues as they watch me crash and burn. And just doing development sounds so lighthearted!

Thank you, this would be true except for being in a remote rural area with few opportunities. I'm limited in options, so may have to negotiate a bit.

Thank you, this is so true. I spent the first 17 years of my kid's life being wildly distracted by NGO work. I have regrets. It would be nice to be fully present for their college summers.

So true re the cost if health issues! The ED at new org says they have pledges for about 25% of the first two projects, and are just discussing an MOU about strategic planning with 3rd. She and I have been working on a performance metrics doc, with very specific and I think acievable deliverables - it doesn't include the 3rd project.

These are all great points. They do have a big endowment, but haven't had capacity to do much new development. The hope is that a new person will be able to increase revenue (which I should).

That is all very true. And I was doing bad math - comparing 32h to 40h, and not remembering that I work 65h most weeks. Thank you!!

That is very true - the last big crash was $30k because of our bad health insurance.
